Hey all, I was down in KY, Red River Gorge rock climbing this weekend but am back.  I did core work every day but Saturday.....but spent most of my day hanging off a rock face.  So that counts as my 10 minutes for the day, right??? Undecided

That sounds like a lot of fun.  There is a new indoor rock climbing center that just opened in town here.  I'm thinking of giving it a try.  I'm sure I will be very humbled but would be great motivation to increase my strength to weight ratio.

You are the sweetest of the sweets, Salty.  xo.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  I definitely want a spot next year.

I'm at 90% right now on a fall marathon. Gotta get my running back to prekid speed.

Are you doing Boston again next year?

I hope you do a marathon! It's seriously such a good way to get your running back. You can half-azz a HM but marathon training WILL come back and bite you if you don't commit. Also, the amount of running it takes to get you to the start line of a marathon is really good for all of the other distances. I PRed everything from 5K-HM just by running lots.

Yes, I'll be doing Boston again this year. Last year left a bad taste in my mouth and that's not how I want to feel about a marathon THAT wonderful.

And PS if you are thinking about a fall marathon to qual for Boston, be sure to check the cut-off date!

So Salty's goin to Boston...hmmm. There's some incentive.

Registration opens Sept 22.  Looks like it will probably close in a couple of weeks.  Hmmm.  I had been thinking October 22, but I might need to bump up to a September one.  That doesn't give me much time, but I only need a 3:45 to qualify, that is if my age group doesn't fill with super speedies in the early days of registration. The fall race would just be to BQ, the winter would be the training that I hope would get me fast again, though training for an April marathon in Iowa's winter is one of the most demoralizing things I've ever done.

(Next breath)

I've been reading about some gnarly uphill treadmill work--brutally delicious!

I would love, love, love it if you made it to Boston. They don't have a mechanical chili pepper that I know of but there is plenty of other trouble we could get in.

The BAA will definitely be opening up registration to more people than last year but they have yet to determine how many more. That will certainly work in your favor.

As for training for a spring marathon. Yeah. I certainly wasn't in anywhere near as extreme weather as Iowa but it wasn't easy. At the end of the day it made me MUCH more mentally tough. I guess you have to look at it that way. And in your case, learn to love the ol' treadmill. If you are already drooling over a treadmill workout, you are sick, but also at an advantage.

Our treadmills at work have skype. lol!

Just an admitted lurker here! Not joining the challenge. Just inquiring. You guys rock!

Training for my first Sprint, and I fit in 3-4 days of core work per week (15-17 minutes). Up to 15 reps each of this: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=...

Also, got my wife to go in on the 30-day Plank Challenge that someone mentioned way earlier in this thread. I can't find the linke because you guys are so prolific with your posts (due to your kick-a** workouts, I might add!). We just hit the 2 minute plank mark, and it was not as hard as I thought. But we're headed up that steep climb to 5 minutes! Anyone out there doing longer duration planks like this? Are you purists who hold the position, or do you re-adjust your weight distribution or feet to cope? Also, do you feel it in your quads? Just wondering.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks PsyTri for posting that link.  I'm still relatively new with my routines and that was very helpful.

Today will be Day 18.  I cannot believe how fast time flies.  The core work has been a great boost to my workouts and I am feeling much stronger and just plain solid.  I also think that I have less pain in my hips, back, and abdomen which have been chronic discomfort areas.

You all are a great group.  I know I never would have crossed this bridge without your support and camaraderie.

So good to hear this Steve Smile  Like Brad said a few posts back, it's not REALLY about the six pack....it's about a functional core that allows us to continue being active without stuff like back and hip pain.  So glad you joined us!

It's been quiet and I'm guessing you're all busy wrapping up end of summer projects and/or busy at work like I am.  I hate it when work expects me to work!

Here is my race report from last weekend.

This coming weekend I'm doing my first ultra.  A 12 hour race around a 2.6 mile trail.  Should be a very interesting experience.  This summer seems to be full of them.

Yowza, that sounds like a lot of crazy running! I like it!

I had AGNats over the weekend and am quite happy to get back to running myself. Any core workout I missed while I was away on my trip I made up for with Switch on the mechanical chili pepper we rode after the race:

I thought that was tricep work?  Maybe that was just in the other position?

Caffer--excellent pic!  Dang it, this gives you boys even more "on top".  I don't know ladies, we may have to be comfortable in a lesser position.

Donkey kicks are good stability work, just sayin.

Sorry I've been a little scarce lately.  I am trying to get caught up on work and home stuff, I have been good about core lately, and I have a new favorite to share with you.

Do a standing lunge with your front foot on a wobble pad (one of those cushy pads that challenges stability, especially peroneals). As you come up to the top of the ROM, lift the rear leg and then lean forward and touch your hands gently to the floor. Repeat.  Start with 20 each side.  If these are easy, instead of taking both hands to the floor, alternate single hand touch with a twist, opening up the upper body to the opposite side of the hand that's down (i.e., left hand touch, open to the right).  Enjoy!

Happy birthday to our very own core goddess Erin!

Congrats to Salty on her fab new job!

Steve, the improvement your feeling is exactly why this challenge was created.  Cool that it's working for you that way :)

Me and my core have not been working too hard lately. Just no friggin "Get Up and Go" since my crash. It seems like heat, humidity and a general malaise are all that I can find in my neck of the woods. Maybe I'll reset and restart.

Good to see the dudes on top, as it should be! Nice addition to the album, Chris.

Nope...it should be there.  Probably a browser cache thingy (technical term).

90 min Bikram this morning...I'm now the instructors' pet project.  My triangle pose, to be specific:
