2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Welcome, John! I feel you on the cold weather! I have been doing a lot of strength workouts lately. It is easier to do them at home, and building your strength is a good base for all the other stuff! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by johngaul NAME: John STORY: I began running about 5-6 years ago, 3 full and 6+ half marathons. Lost my mojo after MCM and kept the couch warm for 8 months. Picked myself up, started running again, then broke my clavicle mountain biking which ate the last 6 months. There are 2-3 tri's that go right by our house and have always wanted to go beyond the run. Have many miles on a bike, swimming is where I need some help. Grew up in the pool yet never competitive swam. I would like to train in open water 2 miles from home, and the same course I would compete on. FAMILY STATUS: Married, daughter(15), son(11) CURRENT TRAINING: Trying to get back into it, cold weather is best for chilling beer. 2014 RACES: nada RACES PLANNED FOR 15: Committed to a half marathon in March. Sprint April?, Oly in September BEER PREFERENCE: Dark and chewy WEIGHT LOSS: Probably 10-15 gain from the last year, yet I am 6'4" and weight not much of an issue. Hi John - Welcome to the party! We are glad to have you and proud that you used your first post to join the BDAS! A few favors to ask - we've got a bunch of people in this group so to help people get to know you, please add your name at the end of your posts to help us cheer you on. We also have weekly challenges - this week our challenge is to see if we can eat 15 different types of fruits/veggies. Feel free to dive in - or to propose your own challenge for next week. Finally - I encourage you to become a regular poster to the BDAS. The more you share and support others - the more connected and accountable you will be. We are here to help, so please feel free to let us know how we can help you reach your goals. I think an OLY by October is totally doable! Good luck! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by nicole14e I had a great swim last night. Swam 1600m total, started with 200m warmup, 500m with the pull buoy, 100 kick, 100 backstroke, 500 with pull buoy, 100 breaststroke and 100 cool down. I knew it was a good workout, b/c when I walked outside, hair still wet and fresh from my workout, I actually said out loud "ooh it feels nice out here." It was 30 degrees out... This morning I did some yoga in my living room. I am working on becoming more flexible, b/c my muscles are often extremely tight. As for fruits/veggies, I am still 4/15, but I made some stew tonight that has onions, carrots, celery, potatoes and garlic (root veggies count too, right? :-), so will be 9/15 by the end of the day. Tomorrow morning I'm going to make a smoothie with strawberries, blueberries and mango, which will put me at 12! I will try to find a way to get those last 3 in. Nicole: Nice work on your swim last night! 1600 is just short of a mile - quite the accomplishment. I say count the veggies - I'm sitting in a bakery near my parents house munching on a Raspberry croissant and I plan on counting the Raspberry Check out my favorite yoga app - YogaStudio - it's great because it lets you make your own yoga workouts so you can target the areas of your body that are the tightest. If you really want to get loose thought - you need to buy a foam roller. Nothing is better at breaking up muscle fibers and the pain that it will cause will pay off with fewer injuries. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Morning Everyone - Just checking in from Cleveland, Ohio (my hometown).... I drove the new car to my parents house to help them do some chores around their house. I don't know how many of you have older parents (clearly - all of you do but I mean really old parents... but getting old is a bi#%@! After watching them hobble around - I wrote my wife to tell her it's time to get fit if only so we can be a little faster/stable in our old age. I'm on Winter break - so I decided to get up and hit the bakery down the street from their house. The croissants are amazing and I plan to work them off with a swim at the local Y. Clearly - swimming is the area where I need to learn the most. Any suggestions on a book or program I could use? |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I didn't see anyone propose a topic of the week (I hope you will propose one for next week) so how about this: For those of you who work out in the cold, how do you stay warm? For me - it's all about layers. I love going out for a ride or run in the cold and I find that if I put on enough layers - I'm able to stay quite warm. The keys for me is to wear a good long sleeve shirt that prevents chafing, a thick pair of socks (I buy running shoes a size bigger to use in the winter), and a balaclava that protects my face. Working out in the cold, for me, is a matter of pride. To be honest - it makes me feel like a bit of a bad@55 when people tell me they think I'm crazy. Doing something that others think is a bit crazy is one of the allures of tri. |

Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Weigh in day today...no loss...no gain. Disappointing but expected. Too many beers last weekend on top of a crab feast...bread dipped in butter with crab=no weight loss. Also a salty meal last night could have added a little extra water weight...hopefully. Going beer free this weekend. Need a good rebound week. Got my bike in this morning. Run at lunch. Coach hockey right after work. Hoping to squeeze in a swim before a meeting at 7 tonight... My kids have four hockey games this weekend plus I play Sunday night. Another month and we will be pretty much commitment free for a little while!! |

New user 42 Sumter, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Got in a 700 meter swim this morning for workout #3 this week. Wasn't a strong showing, I'm not sure if I'm seeing the effects of the 100 pushups yesterday, the night of sleeping on a vinyl hospital couch (finally home though), or a combination of the 2. I did meet a swim coach today that gave me a couple of pointers that helped a considerable amount. Looks like I may investing some money on a swim coach for a bit to make sure I don't engrain any bad habits. Plan tonight is to get a rough fitting in on the new bike with some parts a pull off of my roadie (peddles and wheels) and but in a 30 minute spin to see how it feels and then make some final adjustments before bed. On working out in the cold it's all about warmth and moisture wicking for me. I prefer a neck gaiter over a balaclava because I can pull it up and down as necessary or even completely off, but keep my hat on. Granted my coldest runs tend to be in the 20's so I usually can get my body temp to a place where I want to start losing some body coverage. Moisture is the enemy of warmth so being able to get keep the sweat from soaking you is imperative. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Qua17 Originally posted by aviatrix802 Originally posted by Qua17 Just checking in... After dropping my wife and daughter off at school - I hit the gym for 600 yards of swimming and aquajogging. I've been swimming for 6 years now - but my new program calls for using a buoy... so awkward. How the hell do you keep the thing between your legs? (I've been ask the same question ) Seriously - I know nothing about swimming. The guy in the lane next to me had a book - swim exercises for triathletes - and I love the fact that it's waterproof. If I wanted to ask for a great book that will help my swimming - which one do you think I should put on my list? When I got home, I spent almost 2 hours getting snow and ice off my porch. Snow was piled high - over the railings - and maintenance was worried that it might collapse. So it took almost 45 minutes to get most of the snow off - but that was only the beginning. After I shoveled off the snow - I was left with more than a foot of ice. I chipped away at it for more than an hour with an ax until one of the guys came down with the a power chisel. It was awesome. With that tool - we were done in 10 minutes. Thank god - I I would still be working on it! Haha! Welcome to my world, Dave! I have been doing all of my swim workouts with a leg buoy until my knee is right! Yup - 2000 yards with it. They do tend to slip out and I yank it back when I'm in a flip turn - makes the turn a bit slow but it's very doable. One of the gyms I go to has a couple different kinds - one side is much thicker than the other side. I put that side toward my front so it's under me while swimming. It wants to float but because the bigger side is under me it's much easier to hold. The regular ones I'm fixing every hundred yards or so as it slips. LOL A pain but my stroke is much more balanced now that's for sure and it's much easier to work on bilateral breathing too. Thanks for the reply Jenn - I'm wondering if you can answer a few questions for me, as I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to swimming. I had assumed that the purpose of the buoy was force your arms to do more of the work. You mention that the buoy has helped your stroke and your bilateral breathing. How so - what's the actual purpose of the #!*&%! buoy? It is to make your arms do most of the work. It also takes your legs out of commission so you can fine tweak your stroke - hand entry/exit, high elbow catch, not crossing over the longitudinal axis of your body when reaching, pulling then pushing back and really feeling the water against your hand the whole time. It just allows me to really think about what my arms are doing without having to worry about or think about my legs at all. I've also always taken my breaths to the right and the very slight buoyancy helps me to find right where my head should be when I practice breathing to the left without sinking the ship so to speak. I can focus on what plane my head is on when breathing right and try to emulate that on the left. I found I would pull the top of my head up ever so slightly when breathing to the left - when that happens it sinks my chin down so I'd have to lift my head more to get a good breath. That takes your whole body out of a good swimming plane and then the hips start to sink, and the legs...etc, etc. Not efficient, wasting energy, and leaves me gasping for air. Last year the Oly I did had the buoys on the left so it was helpful to be able to occasionally take a breath to that side to see where I stood without pulling my whole head up to look. I don't know if this helps. Thor was more of a competition swimmer that I was I think - he may have a different slant on it and/or more to add. |

I'm still working on going continuously, but I've been using active recovery in my swims and finding I need a lot less down time in between my freestyle endurance laps. Following my plan I'm swimming 100 free and then active recovery 50s with breast or back. It's more fun than gasping at the end of the lane, that's for sure! I need to do this!!!! Gasping at the end of the lane - describes me to a t... It's the same idea as running intervals or whatever else, just trying to force your body to keep moving and keep heart rate up rather than staying still. I find that for swimming it really helps increase my lung function and endurance in general. |

I've been doing 100-200m pull drills in the water, but I was worried about not doing full freestyle enough. I'd be interested to see how following something like this for 1/3 weekly sessions felt. |

Thanks! I don't usually do them as heavy as I did yesterday, but I do usually use it pretty often. Sometimes when I am doing more of a speed workout I will alternate 100s with and without. I feel like my legs usually get all the attention in my other workouts, and I really try not to use them too much when swimming in a tri, so I'm not too worried about not kicking. I do try to get some kicking in though to make sure my legs don't forget what to do I almost forgot the reason I went to pull heavy yesterday though, and it was to focus on when the buoy comes loose, like Dave said he was having a problem with. Dave, I found that occasionally when it came loose, if I just moved my legs up and down a little it would put it back in position. Otherwise, I also adjust while I do my flip turns, like someone else said. If it just popped up a little, I just use my heels to push it back into place. If it went too far down towards my knees, I would take an extra second in my turn and just pull it back into place. Also, not sure how you hold your legs when you do it, but I found that keeping my toes pointed made it easier as well. |

Shirt Vote: I vote 6 Cold Gear: When it comes to cold weather running gear, this works for me down to 20. I haven't tried lower...yet: For ease of reading, SW = sweat wicking - 2 pair SW socks - SW underwear - SW pants. The tight ones, not baggy ones. - SW shorts because no one wants to see the tights pants on me. - 1 short sleeve SW tech shirt for underneath (this is where all the old race shirts come into play) - 1 long sleeve SW tech shirt - SW gloves - SW hat - light running jacket I tend to run hot, but this works for me. I run with the running jacket for 1 mile then begin to overheat, I unzip for about a mile and then remove for the remainder of the run. I even carried that jacket for 12 miles during my November half marathon, though I should have toughed out mile 1 and left it behind. Dropping below 20 I'd probably add a balaclava. I plan on running Saturday morning, so I'll post a pic. |

Going to be a tad big to start but a little growth spurt and he will be fine. He is super pumped about it.
