I think that's a good decision, Alan - to bag the race. Odds are if it winds up being freezing rain they would cancel it anyway.
I don't know what your workout schedule is but maybe you need to tone it down for a week and rest/recover?
I like the idea of the mussels, I eat a ton of spinach when I get that way - in smoothies, sautéed with garlic, you name it.
How about magnesium or vitamin D? When the weather goes to crap I take Vitamin D (so pretty much for 3/4 of the year here in VT). I find it helps with my energy a fair amount.

Got my brick in early today.
45 min on the trainer at o' dark thirty followed by a short run in the snow, sleet, and freezing rain...good times. Headed out to teach people things they don't know..

For GU, I'm like you, Dave, chocolate outrage and an occasional salted caramel but they get kind of sweet. I don't mind these things for Oly distances but for longer distances I'm thinking I may give Infinit a try for IM. For the HIM I ate pb& honey on the bike and a GU. Actually I did the Aquabike for that one so no running.

I ate a 2lb bag of mussels yesterday thinking this feeling might be caused by low iron. Last night I started getting a terrible headache that last through the night and is still here this morning. I sometimes get migraines from extreme weather changes and I think what's happening counts. It went from sunny and warm to cold and snowy over night. I think I'm going to abandon the race on Friday. They're calling for freezing rain now. Not enough on the line to justify taking that risk.

Ugh, that weather sounds miserable. Probably best to take the day off and save yourself for Nashville (I think that is soon?), especially if you're not feeling like yourself. I hope it gets better!

I am back at work but still not feeling 100%. I'm going to go on a run after work and hope that makes me feel a little better. I think I partly feel awful b/c I haven't moved much the last couple days.

I received my racing license today. The OCA messed up the name of my team. Either that or Universal Santa is one of the title sponsors. :P

I'm still feeling like crap but they called off the freezing rain on friday and are now saying it will be sunny. I'm hoping I can kick this thing in the next couple days and race on Friday afternoon.

Dave Q: Besides IMMT is TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Desperately wanting to pick your brain and Alan's brain about the IMMT bike leg sometime! Ack, I'm a wreck - keep hearing stories about how hilly it is.

Yes, sir!!!  :-)

Monday:  AM short bike/run session, evening 1800M swim and upper body ST
Tuesday:  90' trainer, 5 x 10' sweet spot, 5' RBI
Today:  lunch 3-4 mile run, evening 1500M swim and some core work

I stole my Monday swim routine from another thread in tri talk, main set was a 1km ladder as 25/50/75/100/150/200 and back down, all at slightly faster than race pace with rest intervals 5-15 seconds depending on the distance.  That hurt a little.  :-/

Happy Hump Day!!!

I feel your pain! Literally! My swim yesterday - the main set was 6 x (25, 50,75,100) @ 15 sec. with 8 x 50 pull sets before and 6 x 50 pull sets after. Ouch. Cool down even hurt and I actually got chilled swimming cool down!

What are you odds you'll be up in Tremblant to pre-ride the course? If you do, let me know. I'm only a couple hours away. I can give you a personal tour of the course. :P

I plan to ride it in early June before the kids get out of school!! It's a 3 hour ride up from here so I plan to go very early from here - maybe be there ready to ride by 9:00 or so (of course I'm saying this a couple of months in advance...)
That would be so cool!! - you get to work high cadence while I struggle through... hahahaa

Sorry to hear about the race in jeopardy Alan hope it works out.

My duathlon went well on Sunday. Broke into the top half of my age group for the first time and really had quick transitions. Ran really hard on both runs and pushed myself.

Since then I started week 7 of my plan which begins the build phase. Tuesday swim that included 6x75 lactate intervals. Wednesday a ride that had 3x long hill climbs on the bike. And this morning a 34 minute run with 14x30 seconds lactate intervals. That was pretty hellish!

Morning All!! Rainy, cold, and dreary here today, but at least the wind isn't howling at 40mph as it has been the last two days!! Off day scheduled on my HIM plan today, so up early with just a little yoga and strength training before work. Thought about adding a swim today, since I'm not great at resting, but decided to trust the plan. It has been a LONG time since I've had two rest days in a week.

Happy training!!

Well the race is out of my hands now. They cancelled it due the weather. Unfortunately they did it about 2 hours after I registered and paid. They're going to give me my money back but my guess is it will be a hassle. Oh well. It makes my week less stressful. Still feeling a bit crappy but starting to feel better so I might try to ride today.

Favorite flavor of gu? Really depends on the day. Cooler days I really like espresso, chocolate, or the salted Carmel. On hotter days, I'm all about the fruity flavors like orange.

Follow up question: What is your least favorite flavor of gu? Mine is vanilla bean, which is weird, because I'm wild about vanilla in most other forms. It is even my favorite flavor of ice cream, as boring as that sounds.

Vanilla is an interesting flavor. It's not my fav. flavor - but it was my first and I like it. But I'm with you - there are better flavors out there. Nice work on 115 and 116

Seems like sickness is going around. I'm not sure if I'm sick or worn out but the last two days have been brutal for me. Yesterday I spent the day curled up in bed feeling terrible. I had to teach spin last night at 8:30pm and couldn't find anyone to cover. There's this one guy in the class who always asks me what my power is at any given moment while were in the class. Last night he was so impressed with my suffer face that he thought I was working really hard so he asked what I was pushing out and my response was 180 watts. For me that is normally a recovery effort but last night it might as well have been a VO2 effort with how it felt. On top of that they're calling for 10-15cm of snow the night before my first road race on Friday. So now, if I am getting sick, I'm debating whether it's worth it to race in risky conditions if my fitness won't be anywhere near what I need to win or place well. And I have training camp in Nashville in less than two weeks so I don't want to wear myself to thin riding with sick legs. I need to impress in Nashville if I want a shot at some of the bigger UCI races this summer.

On the plus side my podcast is doing really well. It hit 26 on the Sports and Rec category on iTunes, beating out Phil Gaimon's new podcast. And the launch party was a big success. So I'm really stoked on that. If you're interested you can search Clipped In on iTunes and listen to the 3 episodes that are available. They've got really good feedback so far, which is awesome.

Also David, if you're having issues finding a training plan that is 2/1 let me know and I can help you out. I use the 2/1 cycle for my training.

I'm loving the podcast! Sorry to hear you're illing but I think you made the right call if that means anything to you.

If you end up racing on Friday - good luck!

It's these types of workouts that will give you the confidence to let you know that you can handle anything! They suck but the harder you push - the more confidence you'll get! And the fact that your breaking into the upper half of your AG shows that all that hard work is paying off!

Definitely coming to you for Duathlon tips! There are a couple I want to do this year, though I think the earlier is too close to my 'A' Duathlon which is the New England Season Opener. 2 mi/10 mi/3.1 mi.

Glad to hear your race went well!

Had my swim clinic workout last night. Went surprisingly well considering I missed last week and I did that HM on Sunday. For you swimmers it wasn't much, but for me it's incredibly exciting to have hit 2000 yards for the first time ever! Fast paced - my only rests were waiting for the people in front of me to start. 7 of us in the lane I think - fun times!

Side note - there's this bitchy older lady in the masters group. She's legendary at this particular Y - basically everyone who swims alot, along with all of the lifeguards and swim instructors, have had run-ins with her. She's the type who thinks she owns the pool. We had to start our class late, so we ran over by like 5 minutes. She's hanging on the end of the pool waiting to start and when I went to do my last 50 she started yelling and went as far as to kick me in the shoulder to get my attention. By this point there were only two of us in the lane so I said 'ok - just jump in!' Seriously, if you can't share a lane with two other people what the hell are you doing in a Masters group? Anyway she didn't kick me hard or anything, and seriously she's famous for this and STILL has a membership so me complaining wasn't going to do anything. So instead I'm viewing it as a badge of honor to have had a run-in with her. I feel like my status as a swimmer at this Y is now real

That is not okay. Glad you are looking at it with a silver lining though. If someone kicked me, hard or not, I am not certain how I would react. Way to keep your cool!
We have those people at my pool as well. My biggest issue personally is that they always want the door open while they are swimming, even when it's freezing outside. Meanwhile, here I am giving lessons to kids who are shivering uncontrollably (and often so am I!) and don't even want to do their fun jumps into the pool b/c it's so cold out of the pool! My boss finally said something to them last week and let them know that we have priority, so I won't even hesitate to say something anymore.

Jenn, I hope your back feels better!!!

I had a really good run last night. It was the first time I've run by myself in awhile and I really pushed myself. I ran 3.41 miles at 8:49 pace. There were a few times where I was like, wow I must be running slow. Then I looked at my watch and I was running the fastest since last year. Definitely a good feeling, especially after being sick (and still am not 100%). It helped that it was 70 degrees out...my perfect running weather. My hip has been bothering me since the run though. I think I need to do some strengthening exercises for my hip. Anyone have any good ones?

I am going to run again tomorrow morning or evening, and maybe hit up my gym in the evening too. I'm going to try to get a good swim in Saturday morning before my lessons, and then maybe get a run in when I am at my parents' house for Easter on Sunday. It's time to get serious about training!
