ryceelliott - 2010-08-05 9:50 AM Water temp=87 degrees?!?!?!? Holy Crap!

With it being that warm, I don't think there will be anyone complaining about wetsuits not being allowed.

Maybe for training I'll go do laps in a hot tub in order to get acclimatized to the water temperature.

Wow, that is pretty darn warm, especially for a river. That kind of water temperature will add to an already hot day...and dehydration. If you're not well hydrated when you toe the line that day, you're going to be in a world of hurt as the day progesses.

So, by skipping the bridge we add two more hills? Hopefully they're not too bad.

up Wolf's Pen around mile 6 I think, but then you go down...42? I can't remember the State Highway number. Then you have to go back up that hill on the highway, but you get to go down the Wolf's Pen hill.  It just kind of sucks doing a biggish hill at mile 102 or so.

by the way, thanks for all the pictures and checking!!! I appreciate the info. I was looking forward to the possibility of going on the new bridge, but I did bike the old route. Its ok, just looking to take away that hill at the beginning and end!

on iamtri one of the posts was... talking about race day plan

"6:50: Pro start.
7:00: Age group start.
7:15: slug another few espresso shots and a salt tab and power bar.
7:45: line is thinning, I might get in line now. "Deck change" out of comfy shorts and into swim suit behind a towel.
7:45-8:42: in the course of 57 minutes, pass a bunch of people. Don't forget to pee twice in the river. And don't drink river water."

i thought that I read somewhere the participant line would be all in the water with in 15-20 minutes? is that right?

Was looking at the race website and found this information about special needs bags.  Does not say you can't put anything specific in bags but says "please" because you "might" not get it back.

Bike and Run Special Needs Bags

You will receive a blue bike special needs bag and red run special needs bag at athlete check-in. A special needs station will be located near the mid-point on the bike and run course. These special needs stations are for special needs purposes, such as nutritional items or an extra pair of socks, etc. All unclaimed bags will be discarded after the station is closed. Prior to the swim start, leave your bags in the designated drop area inside the transition area. Note: Please do not put anything valuable in your bike or run special needs bags as you will not get them back if not claimed on the course

This is from the race website:
"The swim course will close 2 hours, 20 minutes after the final athlete enters the water. Utilizing a unique time-trial start, the final athlete is projected to enter the water by 7:45 a.m."

I have read in some race reports that it took longer but I cannot say from personal experience.

Bib numbers were posted 8/19 last year, so we likely have about 2 weeks before they are up.

Talked to the Louisville HQ and they said USAT rules do apply and that there is no rule superceding the wetsuit rule (up to 84, as long as you understand you can't get awards or qualify for Kona).

So for all us slow people, no worries. Unless, of course, it goes 85+

Sweet.

Now I am really confused - I have read virtually everywhere that the KY IM is a non-wetsuit swim.  I have also spoken to a lot of people who have done the race and they all said, without exception that wetsuits are not legal in Louisville (these were not people expecting to qualify for Kona).

I just bought a Blue 70 skin suit since I am not a great swimmer and I knew wetsuits would not be allowed.

I thought the rule was no wetsuits in water above 78 degrees, and since the Ohio River is always over 80 it is a given that wetsuits will not be legal.

Can anyone else definitively clear this up - once & for all???

If the water temperature is between 78.1 - 83.9 degrees you can wear a wetsuit and WILL BE timed, but WILL NOT be eligible for awards or kona slots

If water is 84+ you can not wear a wetsuit.

To anyone wanting to wear a wetsuit in 80+ degree water, you really need to try a long swim as you will build up way too much heat and possibly ruin your whole day. The time you save may not be worth the risk. I have not seen anyone wear a suit in 3 years of the race. Safe training everyone!

Any idea which goggles are best for the swim since we go into the sun 2/3 of the swim?  Clear or tinted?  Anyone done this one before have an opinion.

Yes, Im up for a BT meet and greet.

I'm really hoping for some great advice on this...I'm recovering from a shoulder injury, but am confident I can finish the swim.  As a safety precaution, I'd like to give myself the most buoyancy as legally possible.  I'm not a fast swimmer and don't expect any record-breaking times.  My goal for this portion of the race is to just get through it safely and by the cutoff time and make up for it in the bike/run legs.  What speedsuit would offer the most buoyancy?  I've considered the tri short route and the De Soto's Forza Riviera's with the "floatpad" offering more buoyancy.  I'm just looking to see if there are other specific options, brands, etc. I should really take a look at either on the tri short or speedsuit end.  Thank you very much in advance...much appreciated!!

The funniest thing I can remember about a SM ECU game was about 13 years ago SM came to Greenville and me and my well drunk friend asked your coach in front of his players while they were warming up "do their husbands play football coach" just before the a$$ whopping comenced via ECU getting stomped.  Now, I say nothing to any coaches!

I'm wearing my US Navy Tri top.  Hoping if I fall flat on my rear a Marine will pick me up and drag me across the line.

I don't think you get a lot of buoyancy from the speedsuits.  Mine feels like there is a slight amount, but it's probably just that I'm gliding through the water better.  I've never tried the float pad to know if that's a big difference.

If your safety concern is strong enough you could go with a swimsafe belt.

That's great.  Thanks for the link.  I wonder if it's legal in the IMLOU?  Also, I notice that some tri-suits are somewhat bouyant.  I saw the 2XU Power X.  Any input?  Thank you very much.

If you choose to swim in a wetsuit, I presume it means that you will not be listed in the finishing placement as well?

This is actually in the exact same location that I previously quoted about the "Special Foods" bags so they must have changed their stance on it.  Hooray!
