Just catching up on posts here. I want to weigh in on the aero helmet topic - my aero helmet wasn't ventilated enough for my liking. Kept causing me to overheat!!! I actually hated it so much I gave it away. However much faster it made me was more then offset by the overheating effect.

Mav, I'd love to join your get-together and meet you guys in person. I'll be getting in late, but I can make the last hour. It'll be nice to put faces to the names

Question for the group:

With the way our fall weather has gone, getting out for long rides just isn't happening.  I've managed two hundred milers, otherwise a whole bunch more 70-80 milers.  Can overall mileage make up, at least a little, for not getting long rides in?  For example, if I've been spending an hour or two per day on the trainer, 3 hours yesterday, will that help me make up not getting in the 6 hour ride I was supposed to do yesterday?

I look at it from a running perspective, if all I did to prep for a marathon was run alot of 10 mile runs, I'm still not going to be ready to run 26, right?

if you are putting more time in on the bike in smaller burst, than one long ride a week, you will have a great bike.  regarding your reasoning comparing it to the run portion - i disagree with your reasoning.  mirinda carfrae holds the IM Kona course record for the run ... and has never run a marathon distance on it's own, in training or otherwise.  I have found the same for that marathons I have done (6).  I just do a bunch of 7-10 milers 4 to 5 times a week and have never had a bad marathon time.  in other words - don't sweat it.  if you are doing a bunch of kick shorter rides, you will be fine.

JasenGuy - 2012-10-25 12:15 AM Can someone explain how the special needs bag works?? Do you just go back to transition or is there a "special needs" area? I assume that they wouldn't have 3500+ bags somewhere on the course. I've only breezed through the athletes guide, but didn't see anything.
. You assumed wrong . They will have one spot about halfway through both the run course and the bike course where they will have special needs bags. It is right on the course just off to the side. They will usually have someone out front with a megaphone calling out numbers for people who want their bag and then a whole crew of people getting them. It's actually an amazingly smooth process.

Jasen - you are familiar with the area.......Special Needs for the bike is just south of the stoplight at Gilbert Rd on Beeline Hwy, on the west side of the road (downhill).  Most people who stop, stop there on loop #2.  The Run special needs is just east of the Mill Ave bridge between the high-rise and TTL along the sidewalk (by the grassy area).  Same as the bike - most people stop on the 2nd run loop.

also to note, you can only access it ONCE so even though you will ride by the bags couple times on the bike, and run by several on run, once you access your bag, that's it, no getting into it again so plan accordingly.

If you've done a couple of 100 milers and a bunch of 70-80 milers, you should be fine.  The first time I did a century ride, I think my longest ride before that was 80 miles and it was only once.  We are almost to taper time anyway, so the work has been done and deposited in the bank.  Just keep the maintenance up.

TL2 - 2012-10-23 8:40 PM I did my last long ride today.  Today is the only day over 70 here in Colorado over the next 10 days.  We are expecting a high of 37 on Friday.  I did 2.5 hrs on our spinning bike in the basement and then a 4 hr road ride.  I would love to say I did a brick, but rather than the run we did a family outing to a pumpkin patch and walked through a corn maze.

Yea me too. Definitely have to keep an eye on the weather report this time of the year!  I did the first two hours on the trainer, nearly four hours outside, then finished up the last 15 minutes on the trainer as I had to pick up my kids from school.  6 hours, 101 miles.  Of course I'm feeling a little under the weather today from riding in that crap.  Just have to get through this weekend and I can start to recover as it's just a head cold I think.

Grateful to have a cool bike training lab at Fraser Bike...I've gotten my last 3 long rides in on a Computrainer with a bunch of people to help pass the time.

On the special needs bags...No reason I shouldn't be able to put items INTO the bag, right?  Say I have arm warmers or  jacket or whatever and I want to ditch it?

Yes, you can ditch things in the bags. Just make sure it is stuff you are willing to not get back.

I did get all my stuff back from my special needs bags. I had to go through boxes the day after the race...some of them were a little gross. They dont promise to have your bags in the boxes, and there is no organization to them...so if you really want your stuff back you shouldnt count on the special needs bags

I was just looking at my calendar for November, checking flight times again, when I noticed that I have Ironman Arizona scheduled as an "all day appointment".  Maybe I ought to change that to a slightly shorter engagement?

There's your comic relief for the day, now get back to hell week!

Not sure about you guys...  But this weekend is the last "uber" long weekend.  6-6:30 on the bike and 3:00 hr run on Sunday (and a swim).

Next weekend is a 4:15/90min brick, which is not "short" but this sat is the last of the long rides till the 18th!

I think I may have done my last long run last weekend.  After that, my Achilles, which has been more or less happy with me for a long time, decided that it was, in fact, not so pleased with me after all.  Lots of treatment on it this week and next, subbing a long ride for my long run this weekend and throwing in an extra swim.  Hoping like others have said that its really the sum total of the work, not one last long run, that will make the difference.  Hope to have my bike and swim fitness as good as possible, so can do what I can on the run.  If I can get it calmed down an get in one last 10-13 mile run sometime between Nov. 8-11, I think I'll be ok.  Can't believe we are really down to the finishing touches.

We'll start in the 40s and be lucky to get to high 50s.  Considering yesterday was high 80s, it's going to be down right cold tomorrow.  I'm not looking forward to it either.

Hope it's not as miserable as you expect.

Good thing is it looks like the winds will be down. Going to be 34-36 at the start with 5 mph winds.

Run Question.  I don't see anything in the athlete guide, but are we required to wear lights/reflective gear after the sun goes down?

We had to use such equip for Ragnar, but I don't recall seeing any such requirements for IMAZ.  I'm thinking I may throw a cheap head-lamp in my special needs bag.

Reflective gear is mentioned in the Athlete Guide, but not lights.  There was some inconclusive discussion earlier about how much this was enforced or needed.  But, it is in the Guide.

At mile 90 of my 6 hour ride my bottom bracket broke, I was able to make it to the bike shop that was nearby.  At the furthest point I was probably 20 miles from civilization, lucked out there.  Hopefully getting a warranty replacement.  The ride got me 5:08 of saddle time, I REALLY wanted to get to 6 hours and over 112.   So happy though that the mechanical happened now instead of in the race, that would be devastating.  Hoping to get my bike back within a week or so in order to shake out any possible issues with the repair work.  Why now?!?  I wanted that 112, oh well. Hope you all have a good weekend of training.

Great thing that it happened now, not race day.  That would have been a real bummer.

From the chat with the director, I gather that they request we wear reflective clothing.  I'm pretty sure they also said they'd have glow necklaces for us.
