Fred D - 2012-01-31 3:25 PM
bzgl40 - 2012-01-31 6:20 PM My goal for Feb is to beat Bryan's training volume.  Ha, I'd have to sbr all day long.  I want to hit all my workouts in my training plan as well as continue the downward trend in my weight as I get closer to race day.  I still expect to potentially miss a workout or two but if I can hit the majority of them, or at least start them I'll be happy
Hey, Bryan works a very demanding job and gets it 'done'. It's why he's so successful....consistent training. Many of us come up with excuses of why our races don't end up the way we want, but Bryan puts the work in and THEN gets the results.

That's for sure, you don't really ever see excuses in his logs, he just goes out and gets it done.  But he's also darn near double as fast as me so I'd have to be out there twice as long.    I always get a kick out of seeing his volume for a run of the same duration as mine.  It's all good though.

In re: to running and walking - Galloway running

I have done a little bit of what he preaches during some training. I think it does help as it takes your mind away and keeps you busy thinking about what is next on each run, more so like the carrot at the end of the stick. I have always thought that if I stop and walk , it would be hard as hell to get going and worry about the knees locking up. After doing two long IM- yes it is hard to get started but everything else we do is hard too!

I think mentally we (I) want to run the whole time and definitely don't want to walk at any aid station. At the same time I am aware and mentally ready to walk if I need too.

That's so funny you all are talking about that as I was thinking about it while in the shower. I have a very flexible work schedule that allows for a HUGE amount of time management opportunities. I am also 100% in a commission based industry, so I make my schedule and as long as I produce revenue, I am left alone to be a happy financial advisor. No one needs to do the kind of volume I do to get great results and to live a happy, healthy lifestyle. Sometimes when I post my volume, I worry that people think that's what everyone has to do to be successful, however they define it, and that's not the case. I do take this sport very seriously, but only to a point. I just really like to train.

bryancd - 2012-01-31 6:00 PM Just finished up my month with a great 30 mile ride followed by a a FAST 5K transition run. Felt great to be running fast again. My run mileage went from 80 in December to almost 150. Feels even better just to be healthy. Bike: 23h 58m 58s - 507.76 Mi Run: 20h 06m 56s - 148.59 Mi Swim:17h 38m - 54200 Yd
Solid work my friend!

Definitely! - makes my numbers really small

Yeah but dont look at it that way. Use his numbers as inspiration. Bryan was once. Couch potato like me

Exactly how I look at it- I have to ramp those numbers and (best Larry the Cable Guy imitation) getter dunn!

I think it's great inspiration to see how time can be managed and still get in awesome volume.  But I agree that some folks will look at it from a comparison point of view.  I don't, however.  I just try to figure out where I can make changes to do more (with quality) and I've already found lots of answers, many of them discipline/time mgt related.  My only 2 questions to you are:  1) Are you in my AG?  and 2) If yes, can you please eat cake and slow down?

Off to get in the swim/run session thanks to the good grace of my lovely wife.

I think only the crazy would seriously compare themselves to Bryan.  lol  I compare it, but more for entertainment purposes.  I just try and do the best I can do and be as consistent as I can be, which is generally fairly consistent, cause like Bryan (and most of us I think), I enjoy the training.

In all seriousness, it's Bryan's attitude that inspires me more then his volume.

I have, I just want to make sure I can give improper attention. What I would do is have a mentor group focused soley on long course training and racing and specifically people looking to be AG podium/ World Championship qualifiers. It would be a supportive group...but with a LOT of honesty and HTFU and honest, sometimes brutal, truth.

Goals for Feb:

300-350 miles biking 3 days a week, 2 days intervals and 1 longer ride on Saturday

100 miles running, it would be my first 100 ever

swim at least 2x a week, try for 3, try to get 20k meters in the pool

get below 200lbs, i have plateaued again, but i also will stop dieting, for me race season starts in 1 month, i need strength and power more than losing 10lbs, if they come off fine, but i will enter race season 21lbs lighter than last year regardless.

i have one more bike session this evening, another hour of Sufferfest, i am going to do "Downward Spiral"  that should take and hour, then i will post my totals, as meager as they are.

Nice January totals!  Half mary trail run got to be tough.

Fred D - 2012-01-314:54 PMWould anyone be interested in setting some goals for February?

For me I am dreaming on

1.  35000yds swimming with more intensity the last half of the month
2.  300 mile on the bike with more intensity the last half of the month and a FTP test.
3.  100 miles of running same on the intensity.

Sign me up if Jedi Master thinks I am worthy.

I have a very tough hide and would love some good old fashion HTFU.

Hey gang,

Mondays and Tuesday are my busiest days of the week.  I had a very stressful night of sleep.  Yesterday earl evening I got an email from my Executive Director and I need to cut my budget.  Not good and is causing me stress.

Thank God I can train.  5 mile run this am and a CT ride tonight.

I am going get some new running shoes at Appalachian Running Co today.  If you are in the Central PA area they are worth seen.

A certain thread is back in Iron Forums “Low Volume training part II”.  I really wish Rick was still around.  Crazy stuff it purposes is just bad for new people to read, imo.  There is a certain phrase that is use HTFU and for a reason.  It takes work and hard work to properly train your body to go long distances.  There is no quick logical answer.  If you short cut you are risking getting hurt and damaging your body.  But hey you guys know that.

Good morning team and happy February!

I'll post my totals later. I am happy with them given that i basically had a week sick. Mostly my goal was to get consistent and my year goal is beat all of my s/b/r volumes from last year by a lot!  I did miss mostly swims this month so i think my next goal is to get in the water 3x a week.  I really need to get my head around having less access to a pool so i need to plan.

February in terms of volume might be lower than Jan just because there are fewer days and I have a vacation to the Dominican planned for mid-month.  IM training will start the first week of March so i am giving myself permission to take the week off training and just enjoy being away while we are gone! (12 days till we go!! YAY).  But i do intend to put in all I can when not on vacation - consistency is still key.
