![]() | ![]() I'm pretty sure Andy is doing the Fargo Half Marathon. No biking or swimming. Being sick, lightning, and wind are all bad. But I don't mind rain, as long as it isn't too hard. If it's above 45, even a steady rain can be great to run in. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Been a little slow at updating the challenge. Turbo session wednesday and then long run (15 miles) yesterday. Today the plan is a long ride. I have arranged to meet a friend for lunch at the far point to break up the boredom of cycling that far on my own... Good luck Gabe! I'm so excited for you. I'm going to be tracking you on my phone from work (got to love modern technology). - Mitch: S 4 / B 11 / R 12 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 27 ; 18:21'57" [Edit for posting at the same time as Mark] Edited by chapfallen 2012-05-18 3:27 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It has been a long time since I have felt Naive, but I certainly have embraced that feeling over the last 24 hours. I really appreciate the advice and especially the warnings. It is nice to know that you don't want to see me hurt myself. I would rather you be blunt like you have been and get it straight between the eyes than get a soft shoe and a blind side. I've done a lot of reading on the subject over the past 24 hours, ( probably reading I should have done prior to signing Up) and came to several conclusions. -I am undertrained to race this race. -I have a sufficient base to complete the distance, but with several caveats. Those caveats being: 1. Its going to hurt 2. Throw away any time expectations and just plan to finish. 3. I need to be careful and listen to my body. 4. I need to leave my ego at home! Here is the new plan: I am still going to do the marathon, but I will have no time goals, I may even reconfigure my watch so it only show speed, distance, and heart rate. My only goal will be to finish. I will use a walk/run strategy. The aid stations are 2 miles apart and I am just going to go station to station. I will follow heart rate and try to average 134 which would be my MAF had I not been doing aerobic exercise for the past two years. It will be a lot slower than I normally run and closer to the 11 minute mile that Chris suggested. I may even place myself in the rear at the start, to help keep me from rabbiting at the start. From what I read I also need to change my nutrition plan. I read that I should consume 1700 cal of additional carbs ( preferably simple carbs) between 36 and 13 hours before the race. Which would mean carb load would start at 7:30 tonight. The good news is I am going to a first communion party tomorrow where Indian food will be served which means plenty of rice and chick peas will be served. I also read that I should consume 300 cal per hour during the marathon. The gels are 170 to 200 cals. GU products are the only thing available locally and I won't be able to get to the city prior to the Marathon. So, I'm looking for suggestions. On the map they show one station at the halfway mark with GU products and every other station has sports drinks. The course is flat with a overall slight downhill grade and prevailing winds will be to my back. The organizers picked the course because they are trying to qualify people for Boston (I'm not in that group). What else to do need to know, to complete this? The new attitude is no matter how long it takes it will be a PR and I will plan and prepare better next time.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Gabe - Godspeed tomorrow! I'll be thinking of you kicking on the course. You have done an awesome job training for the race. Go out and have fun - I'm sure you'll do great. @Andy - First - Good luck on your race! Continuing, I agree with Chris. It's the wind that sucks. Rain can be annoying, but if it is windy you need to change your pace goals. My HM last fall was windy and while I didn't change my pace plan the course conditions ultimately did. I expended too much energy dealing with the wind and started to blow up near the end. My run over the weekend it poured but there was no wind. I think it helped with keeping me cool. @Jim - Good luck on the Marathon. I can't recall but did you state that GUs and your stomach don't get along or were they just messy? I would get a bunch of GUs if you can stomach them and safety pin them to your shorts. GU always recommends taking on every 45 minutes with plenty of water which I guess works out to about 300 calories an hour or so. Edited by dangremond 2012-05-18 8:45 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice swim this morning. Did 600 straight for the first time, and it was easier than expected. Did a reverse ladder (600/400/300/200/100); and was able to keep pace constant (slow, but constant). - Mitch: S 4 / B 11 / R 12 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 27 ; 18:21'57" |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I recieved my race number, confirmation packet, virtual gear bag, and last minute instructions this morning. I read the last minute instructions which included the pace cut offs. At which time my lower intestinal stress returned. I have 6:30 hrs to finish the race. The race begins at 7:30 and the first cut off was listed as 8 miles by 8:30! I panicked. I can't do 8 miles in an hour and if I tried I will blow up at nine. I checked all of the other cut-offs and I can make those. It was insane. I checked the web site and they only posted the 6:30 hrs cutoff. I called the race director and left a message. I rechecked the email. All I could think was after all of the warnings, why didn't ask before I did something ridiculous. Certainly, this could not be the only race with such a tough first cut. They do sell it as an "easy" qualifier for Boston. Mostly flat slight downhill grade and prevailing wind to your back. So maybe the market was really a much better athlete than me. Then I got a new email there was a type-o. The first cut off is 8 miles at two hours. I could breathe again. |

That would have mean that anybody that did not run the first 8 miles in under 8 min/mile would have been cut-off. I am guessing a lot of people stressing out right now |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jim - I think you're mad, but to be fair it's probably no more ridiculous than my IM attempt is going to be. I appreciate your decision to rise to the challenge. Good luck, and look after yourself. Long ride today. 5 hours. My legs are now toast. Tomorrow I am going to be walking a lot at work, which will hopefully clear out any residual stiffness, and then hopefully swim session after work. - Mitch: S 4 / B 11 / R 12 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 27 ; 18:21'57" |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today it's been a rest day for me, so that is three so far this month. I have spent a few hours with Gabe, his wonderful wife and Jackie who would not miss an Ironman for the world. I had a really good time and Gabe looks more ready than anybody I have ever seen before. The weather will be about five degrees cooler tomorrow than it was for me a year ago so that is a plus, and the (usually strong) winds will be light and variable, mostly from the gulf. It promises to be a fun race to watch, there will be tons of people on the course and I am planning my long run for tomorrow that I will put on the course before they close it for the athletes coming off the bike. Cheer for Gabe! He deserves it, he has put an enormous amount of work, dedication, passion and love to this endeavour, everything is coming together now. We're already planning our first Ironman together, which might be Cozumel 2013. Any other takers? Chris? Joe? Anybody? Follow tomorrow starting at 7AM on www.ironmanlive.com and his number is 2115. I will be posting updates periodically here and on his facebook profile. |

Get out there and grab your dream (and while doing it think of all those people people in your life who have allowed/indulged you to pursue your dreams). You are in our thoughts. Take a deep, savor the moment and when Mike Reilly calls your name BE in that moment.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hola amigos, It's incredible how time flies, but race is here already tomorrow! Today I had the chance to finally meet Ernesto and Jackie in person and we had a great time catching up with them and getting Ernesto's last pointers for the race. I wanted to take the time to thank you all for your support and encouragement for this wonderful challenge and will give it all my best tomorrow! I need to run and get last minute things for my special needs bags, so cheers to all and hope to have a good race report to share very soon! Gabe |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bbreezer1 - this is unbelievably tragic... sadly it happens all the time. I have even experienced morons swerving to scare me as I run on the shoulder (when there's no other place to run). A 33k run this morning, 3:25. Felt pretty good at the end, which is my goal, really, as I don't care too much about the time. I'm not gonna win this marathon anyway. - Mitch: S 4 / B 12 / R 13 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 29 ; 19:29'08" |
