I've been using that excuse a lot lately myself and I find that I'm making it too easy to skip entire days of training cause I don't want to (or don't have the time to) drive the 40 mins to the gym. I'm not following any particular plan right now, just trying to build back to where I was pre-injury, but I've made the decision that I can't let the cold dictate my training anymore. I always train harder if I'm outside so for the past couple of days I have been making myself go out there to run and ride. Already feeling better about it. Went 45 mins at 20 MPH on the drainer tonight and never broke a sweat cause the barn was a glorious 10 degrees! |

Extreme Veteran 576 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Mitch - I have been doing my swimming in the morning before work. It is normally for 30-45 mins. I did a few longer 1hr sessions and that was enough for my HIM. I struggled to have any energy to run after my swims if i went later in the day. I only train 6 days a week and managed to most weeks get 3 of each in. Mon (medium), Wed (long) and Friday (speed) run. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (long) my rides. Then it was just a matter of squeezing the swims in. If I slept in I will go out during work for a swim. Not sure how that will go for you. Training for a HM you will want more running days which can be done on the days you are not swimming?? |

Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: Help with Not Finishing Runs I need advice! I'm in week 16 of the Hanson plan. Things have been going reasonably well for the first 14 1/2 weeks. This past Sun, I did not do the planned 18 miler, would have been my second. This one had the middle miles at MP. I managed to get through 12 (3 WU and 9 at MP) and then ran and walked 2 more. Then I bailed out and got a ride back to the car. I took 3 days completely off. Today was a planned 12 miler. 2 WU, 8 at MP and 2 WD. I haven't even uploaded the workout yet. It was awful. Now it was warmer than it's been and slightly windy, but I just didn't want to be out there. I almost decided that I wasn't doing a marathon and didn't even want to train for tris anymore. I came back and had a pep talk from my virtual running partner who I plan to run the marathon with. I felt a little better. I just don't know whether to take more days off and keep losing fitness, or just push through it or maybe there's a third alternative. Suggestions? |

I have not done a marathon at all so i can't comment on your effort or out put. But i can encourage you to hang in there. I think its normal to have a few off days. You may not have slept as well or you are run down. Just dont give up. I don't like the person who made this saying famous but is so true - “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.
Hang in there.

You have invested a lot of time and effort into this and I would hate to see it wasted. My advice: rest to recover from this burnout, but run some as well, just much less and not every day. I wouln't worry about the loss of fitneess, because at this point you can't run much anyway... sorry to be blunt. Watch some videos that would inspire you to get the desire to do the marathon again. Hopefully the mojo will come back quickly. I'm sure you still have it in you! ---------- I haven't done anything today (you are not alone Jackie). It was raining (for a change), the bike was at the LBS (few new spokes) and on top of it had to start the work early at 7am. No big deal. Tomorrow is another day and will go for a longish run. I don't know the Hanson plan but I'm guessing you still have about 4 weeks to go if you're doing 18 milers now. You have 14 good weeks behind you and a great base. One of the most important things I believe is getting to the marathon feeling fresh and ready to go not burnt out. Remember why you run... have some shorter fun runs and enjoy them. |

Jackie, We all have that mean little voice that knows our weaknesses. The one that says you can't do this or why are you wasting your time, you could be sitting a home drinking a glass of wine and relaxing right now, or hay you're just too tired take a day off. Right now you are in the grind of your plan, the part that is taxing physically and mentally. You will be more disappointed in yourself if you quit now. You can do this. The workouts you don't want to do are the ones you need to do the most. If it is a real grind change the workouts around and do a workout that you like more and rebuild your confidence, then get back on it. Its when you don't want to do it is when you have to do it. |

I just don't know whether to take more days off and keep losing fitness, or just push through it or maybe there's a third alternative. Suggestions? Jackie - 1st you are doing great! You're following a challenging plan that is pushing you out of your comfort zone. I would look at the 6 runs per week and see where you can dial it back for a week. Some of the easy runs during the week cut a mile or two of distance off and make sure you are running at the slowest point of your easy pace (see the link I posted earleir this week on recovery run paces). On your long run on Sunday forget the MP for a week and just get the run in at an easy pace. I had a tough week last week and did less than 1/3 of my long run. You're going to have bad weeks. Take it easy for a week and recover and come back with a vengeance. As an aside, what MP have you been training to and where did that pace come from? Thanks! |

Veteran 419 clayton | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Jackie - I cant help technically, but keep up the great work!! I have to doth my cap to all you 'northeners' - I just spent a few days working in Boston - 8 degrees even with appropriate warm clothing felt cold - and then the windchill!!! After returning to Raleigh - 24 degrees was just as bad, especially when used to 60's. and then I read some of you TRAINING in single digits - as Roy Castle used to say, 'Dedication is all you need!' - and you folks have it! Congrats!! |
