Good morning all, and happy Friday!

I woke up this morning and did a little strength workout in my living room (this makes me 5/6...Dave, you better get working!). My phone told me it was 2 degrees this morning but the wind chill was -15. Most schools in the area are on a 2 hour delay because of these record lows. I know some of you experience this regularly in the winter, but I honestly don't know how you do it. I hope everyone is staying warm!

My stew last night turned out delicious, and I had a little cantaloupe, which makes me 10/15. I didn't make my shake this morning, but I'm going to try to remember to make it Sunday. I head to my parents in PA straight after work, so we will also see what they have around their house, although they don't usually have much during tax season (my mom is a CPA).

I hope everyone stays warm! I love seeing how active everyone is regardless of the cold weather. Happy training!

Morning everyone! I just had the greatest swim, I swam a 1400 in about 40 mins. Not going to win me any records in the speed department, but my endurance seems to be increasing dramatically every few days out. I'm amazed at how different my lungs feel a few weeks after quitting smoking!

Nicole, I did three sets of 350 pull-drills and it felt great. I'm definitely going to incorporate those more into my swims in general, and a lot more into my weekly long swim. It makes so much sense to focus on my upper body/core when I'm in the water.

Aside from my goal to be sprint ready come August, I've also set myself a personal endurance goal to be able to swim the full IM length in 2015 (169 laps, YIKES). Not looking to swim it continuously, but just to be able to do it all in a session with breaks thrown in. I'm definitely built to be an distance swimmer, and I really enjoy the meditative time in the pool so I think it's a great goal to work towards.

Perhaps next week we could discuss goal setting/rewards?
I love to reward with food/beer, but I'm trying to look beyond that. I want to know how you guys stay motivated in the short and long term!

Happy Friday!!

That's awesome! Sounds like a great workout, and I'm glad your endurance is getting so much stronger. I also think your goal to swim that length is a really great one, and you are off to a very good start! I will start thinking about my goals and rewards for next week's discussion. I think that is a really great topic.

Hey - blame Russia for this (that's where the cold front is coming from)

And it had better warm up in the next two weeks, my wife was so tired of the weather being so absolutely miserable that we're taking an impromptu long weekend Orlando trip in March.

YES! Double bike p0rn! The aerobars look great, but of course nothing looks as great as a pro Tribike. Those Italians sure know design.

Workouts - had a somewhat rough run last night. Tuesday I was able to stay right on the upper end of zone 2 and get 2 miles at ~8:30 pace. Last night 5 minutes in at 8:45 I had to slow it down, and ended up averaging 9:20 over 30 mins to keep my HR in Z2. I guess I shouldn't worry about my pace so long as I'm keepign my HR in check, which I did (in the old days I would have just pushed through, HR be damned).

Fruits/veggies - I'm up to 15 if we count potato as a vegetable, added peas, avocado, heirloom carrots (red, purple, yellow, orange), and multi-colored potatoes to the list yesterday. Actually even if not the potato mix included sweet potato, that has to count.

cold weather - I'm all about the wicking layers, preferably Under Armor. And +1 on the tights with shorts over them. Made the mistake of wearing them sans shorts to a 10k last year and heard too many banana jokes. I've only braved down into the 30s though, nothing below freezing. For the freezing stuff I do have running gloves and a running fleece hat.

Shirt - Vote is for version 5. I love the linked circles on the 3 events.

and p.s. thanks to Dave O. for the idea on the bolds!

I've been tinkering with my swim (I su%@ - and my times have dropped to 2:30x100) and am going to take 5th up on his suggestion of giving total immersion a try. If you get any good tips from your coach - please pass them on.

Have a better day!

Turns out the rough swim was actually the beginning of the stomach bug my son had. Hasn't hit me as hard, but I'm still down. My 5 year old has it too, but it also hasn't been as extreme. I'm 8 days out from my half marathon which is kind of disappointing. Hopefull I can get back to 90% by race day.

The final components for the bike build should roll in today, maybe I'll feel good enough this evening to finish it up and post some pics.

On the bright side, it was 9 degrees this morning so i probably wouldn't have run anyway!!

Love all the bike pictures! (except Thor's which I really, really want to see- I have a problem with kid bikes my 5yo being on her 4th bike and me questioning if she needs a new one already)

I actually swam today- this having Fridays off work is going to be AWESOME! I am starting to feel a little stronger in the water- now I need to find a way to move to 2x/ week and I'll really pump it up.

I vote for shirt 6- I feel the front design is slimming and kind of looks like abs

I love the ideas of a motivation/ goal setting topic for next week Mel!

Jeremy - I hope you feel better before your race!!! Remember if you feel like puking- do it- don't hold it in- you recover much faster (at least that's what I learned in my first trimester- I was the puking queen.)

East Coasters- we are getting your weather this weekend- but I'm kind of excited- we need snow!

Version 6 is my vote!

Originally posted by Qua17 The Vote Is In! For all you Floridians (who were probably freezing your butts off - ha ha) there were no hanging chads and the winners were never in doubt. The group thought versions 5 and 6 were the best. So I will attach those to this post. Next Steps: You will have from Thursday to Saturday to vote for your favorite design - one vote each. Then - once we pick our favorite design - we can make some suggestions on Sunday and Monday. Hopefully by next week, we will be able to order the bike shirts. Does that work for everyone? I'm hoping I can get a volunteer to do the leg work on finding a place to make the bike shirts. Anyone interested?

Felt a bit like holidays, other than the cold, snowy outside...Will try get a quick swim in before bike tomorrow morning. The 4:20am alarm is painful at times but I think I am getting used to it. Funny how 20 minutes earlier makes such a difference for me(alarm used to be 4:40).

My son has been bugging me about doing weights, so last night we went over a program for him last night along with my daughter. We will be starting that tonight.

We also decided to start daily pushups. We are all starting with 3 sets of 5 pushups every day.

Nice, I have to start on pushups again!

Wanted to quickly check in with you guys before I crash. Fridays are bike and run days and this was the first I got a full workout in. And I felt surprisingly good both during and after. It wasn't until I crashed into the couch twelve hours later that I started feeling it in my legs. But I have to say the weekend sounds amazing around now.

Hey all, been away for a few days at a conference (actually, still at the conference, but finally have a few minutes to myself). It has been crazy busy and workouts have slowed down quite a bit, but it has been a good trip where I learned a lot. I did get in workouts on Tuesday, yesterday, and this morning. I owe you all a CLP for Wednesday, because I had all morning free, but I just slept. I must have needed sleep, I was down for 12.5 hours that night. Anyway, CLP when I get home, but no way am I paying $10 for a Coors Light!!

One benefit of this trip has been the opportunity to try a bunch of different beers... some better than others.
Right on Red (red ale, Orlando Brewing)-- good, subtle flavors with no bitterness at all
Jingling (spelling?)-- very good, wish I could get it at home, but haven't ever seen it there
Young's Double Chocolate Stout--great, nice thick head, deep flavor, just missed the point where you have to chew it due to the viscosity--(perfect)
Belhaven Scottish Ale--also good, but not as good as the stout
Death Rides a Pale Horse Blonde Ale--eh... not terrible, but also not great
Death Becomes You Amber Ale--not bad, but the finish is a little bitter for my taste

Six new beers in three days and some of those were sampled a couple of times to make sure I liked them--must have been a better conference than I thought!

Back home tomorrow and have plans to head directly to the gym from the airport (wife is out of town somewhere else, so no real need to go home). Hope all of you are having great training!!

Oh... also... practically no fruits or vegetables this week, so fail that challenge.

Clearly you needed the sleep - don't sweat it! Good for you getting those other workouts in while at a conference!
Do you mean Yeungling? I like that beer! Yummy. Also, the chocolate stout is so good - yes, you could chew it. Some chocolate stouts miss the mark but when they get it right, it's my chocolate milk.

I think I'm 6/? (7/? with PT) Did a short brick today with a modified run/walk and elliptical for 3 miles. My watch doesn't pick up mileage on an elliptical but the time is there. Then I jumped in the pool - only had 20 minutes or so but squirreled in about 1100 yards. I screwed up and forgot to start my watch again after my 300 warm-up so the logging piece is messed up but that's okay, I know what I did. The time is still there - just not the lap count.

So I had sushi for lunch. Does seaweed count as a veggie? LOL Hoping for a spin on the trainer tomorrow and skiing in the afternoon...Sunday, all day ski because guess what!!!! It's going to reach 20 degrees on the mountain!! Heat wave!
