Warning - sappy post, but I just want to tell some people who may understand more than most.  Skip it if you're not in the mood.

Yesterday morning I was helping out with my youngest son's program.  We (mostly my wife!) do a pretty extensive amount of special work with him to give him the best chance in life.  He tries amazingly hard to do things that "typical" kids do without thinking, but he never gives up.  He has his moments, like all of us, but for the most part he just plugs away.

Anyway, as he was really struggling to repeat back a 4 number sequence I had given him, it dawned on me that his entire life is a lot like my triathlon journey: he has to work crazy hard and even so he'll still never out achieve other kids in the normal, measurable ways, but he and I know the truth!  I'm dedicating the rest of my triathlon training and racing to him and I'll always have that little extra to shut up, HTFU and deal with it.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

You are a great dad. He's lucky to have you as his parent. Always good to put things into perspective and always good to find a reason to race.

That was wonderful. Made me want to go out and fit in the run I blew off this morning. Consistency is key, my inner motivation is also key. Thanks!

It was pretty good.

ray6foot7 - 2010-06-11 10:53 AM How about 10 minutes on the trainer, or a short jog before heading out the door for your ride?
No trainer because I'm not at home, but the jog sounds like a great idea.  I think I'll try a short warm up jog just to get the heart rate and legs pumping.

The immediate hill is hard, can you go the other direction?

ray6foot7 - 2010-06-11 2:45 PM Along the lines of Warren's post a month or so ago:

I posted on Facebook this morning that I was getting anxious about racing tomorrow for the first time in 10 years.  My wife comments back, "Don't think of it as a race, think of it as training for September. It is good practice for you. Work out some of the kinks in your transitions."  Really?  Where in the hell did that come from?  I think she has been sneaking in time on BT.

I am sure you already started racing today, but you are going to do great.

Just remember that 1 day off a week equates to almost 2 months off over the course of a year.

While out on my ride this morning (have a lot of time to think...which I really enjoy) I realized that just as your son is an inspiration to you for how hard he tries...you too (we all are) are an inspiration to others - the ones that are just thinking about getting off the couch.

I just had a great swim in the lake.  We've had a week with some pretty cool nights, so the water was a lot cooler than last week - it's at 64 today.  I was only doing 100 repeats, but they just felt effortless so I kept going.  I have to do some longer continuous swims at some point.

The hill up here is the only way out of the Marina, so I'm essentially stuck with it at the start.  I'll just do a little jog, I honestly had never considered that!  Duh.  There's no way I can walk the bike up it, if anyone sees me I'd never get over the humiliation!

Congrats to Ray, he crushed his sprint today.  That is serious speed on the bike!  Are these courses all downhill or what?!?  Laughing

Race report up - http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=212787

I had a great time this weekend.  I had forgotten how much fun it was to compete.  It did a lot for my motivation level.  I ready to get back to the grind.

Thanks for all of the encouraging words and inspires.

Race report is up. It was a rough race for me and it didn't come together as I had hoped. But anytime I can get out there and sweat is a good time so I'm taking it as a learning experience and will grow stronger because of it. 2:48 11th of 27 in age group.

Thanks for the race reports guys.  Looks like the races worked out well, all things considered.  The heat definitely plays a major impact Bob.  And Ray, I loved your comment about hammering the bike because your run sucks anyway.  I feel the same, though I wish my run sucked like yours!

Thanks for sharing your story, Warren.  Having a special needs child is full of challenges, but with many great rewards as well.  Similar to triathlon, we need to celebrate the small victories and breakthroughs!

I bought a bike trainer today, I wasn't brave enough to try rollers like Warren though.  I also signed up for B2B HIM, my running buddy signed up for it with me.  He sucked me into running races and now I am pulling him into tris!

You will like the trainer. Did you get the stand for the front wheel? It helps me with stability. Also - based on my experience, little bits of rubber, etc. will fly off the back wheel making an interesting "spray" pattern on the wall behind the back wheel (if you are close to a wall...)

I have the cadence sensor from Garmin - which has been really nice for figuring out what cadence I need to keep up for a particular zone.

Glad to hear about B2B - it's one I have in the back of my head for the full distance in a few years. You'll have to give us the details!

B2B is at a great time of year for me too.  As Aaron said great weather.  I am planning that one as my full if my body and family hold up for the training required!

I haven't given a trainer update in a while.  Once or twice a week I still jump on for a ride.  I've gotten ok at riding on the hoods and I'm working on aero - but no real success on that yet, and no videos either!  I'm thinking if I can get aero on the rollers, I'll be way more comfortable on the road in terms of handling.  I have to say that the rollers have really helped my balance and handling, which I didn't realize needed so much work.

I agree with Jennifer on the cadence sensor for the trainer.  Short of having power a meter, the cadence kept me honest with effort.  If I knew I could drive this gear at 90 rpm for 10 minute intervals last week, I couldn't cheat myself through the workouts by easing off.  Of course, if anyone wants to donate a power meter I'd be happy to use that for effort measurement!

My wife and I have been discussing whether or not the time is right for me to do a full IM and she said that she didn't think it would be fair to her or the kids right now and I agreed.  They're in so many activities and with my oldest daugher's special needs, it would be very tough on everyone.  So I'm going to have to put my IM aspirations on hold for a few years.

Friends of mine that have older kids say that my daughters should start hating me and wanting nothing to do with me at about the age of 12 or 13.  So that puts my race out a good 5 years or so.Wink

I'm with you on that one. I figure I should spend the time with my girls now (ages 7 and 9) while they still want to hang out with me (and before I embarrass them by my very presence). I also think it will be worthwhile for me to build up a good base in triathlons before attempting the longer distances.

I'm sorry that your goal was changed (that can be frustrating) - but the reasoning makes complete sense...and this way I might actually be ready for an IM when you are! I think the pursuit of an IM finish is a family affair. If the family isn't behind you on your pursuit - it can be a very lonely place to be.

So - in my very roundabout way - sorry to hear it, but it sounds like the right decision.

Don't be sorry... I'm not.  I'm not ready for it... mentally or physically.  Training for a half IM is all that I can handle and even that seems overwhelming sometimes.  140.6 will just have to wait!

One race tip. Stay in one gear easier than you think you need when you are on rollers or flat.
