Is there another group? Are you cheating on us Rudy??? Yes, it was this group. But then Jen (I think it was Jen) posted a link to an article about fasted training. Scott followed with another study on it. Not sure what to think about it now. I've seen so much research on it, and a ton of conflicting research at that, that I'm to the point of use yourself as a guinea pig and if it works for you great, if not than turf it. I've always been a guy who would rather try something on himself to make a first hand assessment vs. deciding based on studies in a controlled environment. Anyway I did my long run this morning. I ran 13 at what should have been an easy pace on Wednesday fasted and it was very hard the last 4 miles. Today I did almost 16 miles fed in about the same time and it was very, very easy. There are lots of "experts" out there that swear by fasted workouts and other "experts" that think they're a horrible idea. They do not work for me (they decrease the quality of my workouts, do nothing for me weight wise and I think there's a lot of be said for practicing race day nutrition every time you train -- I think there's a reason I don't have GI issues on race day and its not because I have a gut of steel). That being said some people love the concept of fasted workouts, its just not something I would personally do or recommend. See that's my thing with athletes of all natures. They all think what works for them works for all and then cite studies that back them up. What they leave out are the studies that don't which often rival or surpass the number that confirm their beliefs. For instance the Endurance Nation belief that you don't swim in the offseason or do bricks. There are knock down, drag out fights over these ideas. My feeling is if there is sufficient evidence either by study or anecdotal to try something give it a go. If it doesn't work then move on. No reason to employ practices YOU don't believe in. It just leaves you with doubts come race day.
Agreed. Do what works for YOU. Too many times people take a black or white stance on things like this and it's really a terrible way to go about it. Every BODY is different and will react differently. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I did 2 bricks a week last summer, and I didn't do them to learn what it felt like to run on tired legs (LOL). I did them because it's the most effective way for me to manage my training time with the lifestyle I lead. I can't squeeze in two training sessions a day all the time, and I'm usually adding a short, easy run to a long/medium bike. There was a male pro - can't remember the name - who did all of his runs off the bike because he hadn't come to the sport with a background in running. Again, different strokes for different folks I agree that what works for one of us might not work for all of us, but I think it's important to pass on the information. You might help someone adjust their routine for the better in some way. I swear by fasted workouts because they work for me (doesn't mean they will work for all!). In races I will use sports nutrition products, because they are convenient, and I will practice using them closer to my season on my long bikes and long runs (though I already know the gels work just fine on the runs). I feel like gels, sports drinks, etc. are really just processed foods, and I don't want to be eating them every day. I'm pretty crazy about my diet though (or so I've been told .

I did sprints this morning and I would like to know if the way I did them was OK. WU 5 min 30 sprints for 30 seconds at 7:30 with a 30 sec RI (jumped off tm) 5min CD Is that an OK way to start or should I be doing something different/better? Thanks! I think the first question is what was the purpose of the sprints? 30 seconds is really short, especially for someone who is distance running as compared to short or middle distance track. Also how did you determine what pace to run at?
Purpose - to add some HIIT (because 'everyone' says you need to do sprints to get faster). Pace determined by HR staying in the tempo/intensive endurace zone. Should I increase to a minute? 2 minutes? Did I do it all wrong?LOL |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Just checking in Friends. Still driving myself crazy. Shoulder is getting better daily and I read your posts daily. Got a great deal online today sierratradingpost.com. Although the model is a couple years old, I still picked up the Zoot Ultra TT 3.0 shoes for $76. Originally $150. Not too shabby. They had an additional 20% off the already discounted price until 10 this morning. So I picked up a pretty cool Pearl Izumi lime green and white cycling jersey. Original $120, got it for $60. I'm injured but I can still spend the money easy enough. |

Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Happy Friday guys and gals! The cold I've been fighting off finally hit full force yesterday so I came home from work early and am working from home today on the sofa. Going to take the next few days off from training - I'm going to miss a fun bike ride with friends tomorrow so I am pretty bummed. I have asthma so when I get a chest cold I usually will fully shut down my training for a few days until I recover - training while sick does not work well for me. |

Member 117 Boulder, Colorado | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Hey everyone! I've also been out sick for the last several days. I actually ended up going home early from work yesterday after I fell asleep for an hour draped over the back of a chair in my classroom (not during class, no worries). I felt like I was drunk, but without the fun. It was so bizarre. I'm about 75% today, and thinking with a good night's sleep I might be back to normal tomorrow - hopefully. But this week was basically a wash. Depending on how I'm feeling this weekend, I'll get some workouts in but I'm not sure what yet. This weather is just killing me. Every winter I go through a couple months of thinking "we could totally move back to San Diego." It's been hitting me hard this year. It goes away once spring rolls around, but I definitely miss the nice weather right about now. |

Just wanted to share a good deal here - these are the protein bars I eat before/during races (or training) or as a needed anytime. It is a great deal - buy one, get one free. They are a little pricey, but oh so good. I can only speak to the choc cherry and low carb mocha. They are very 'clean' - http://dalesrawfoods.com/products/dales-raw-protein-bars/ |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I just did my Sunday run, fasted. Beautiful crisp morning. We did a trail run around a really pretty lake, horse poop was abound. Saw birds, deer, coyotes. I did it fasted. Then ate a hard boiled egg but must have gotten some soap in the bowl. Eggs and soap don't taste good. Going swimming later. Fasted work outs are good if done correctly. Bricks are good if done correctly. Chocolate milk and coffee is the best recovery beverage. Beer is yummy. And boobs rule. |

Oh yeah, that too I did step in to a cactus earlier in the ride, too. Again, trying to be nice and make way for someone else, I do damage to myself. Luckily it was the side of my shoe/foot and I could step on it with my other foot to pull it out. Not too bad. I need to remember to throw some old tweezers in my camelbak though. |

On the trainer for a ride this morning and then have an easy run with hill sprints to do later.
