CyborgQueen - Many thanks for celebrating my finish and watching the video!  I was smiling so "Hard"... wish I could have relaxed a bit... but was stiff from the toll of the day.  ...and a great day it was... so happy to get to the line!  ~C~

Carla, that is very neat the way that Mike Reilly had the whole crowd into calling your Ironman finish!!  Awesome!!

So, what are you doing with all your spare time?  Cool

...spare time... uhm... well... actually I have List's of Lists of things that NEED to be done... none of which interest me.

List include:  Mowing what's left of my lawn... cleaning house... washing car... blah, blah, blah...  (nothing to do with Swim, Bike, Run...)

... ready for my next race and training plan.  At least I see the benefit of training vs chores!

I think is kind of funny that some of you folks are complaining about the heat, and now in Vegas, it's been nice really early in the mornings...70-85 until ~9am.

Congrats again Carla!! Seriously - you're my inspiration! LOOOOOVE the video! You had the biggest smile! :-)

It's not the heat that gets me it's the heat plus 100% humidity.

Today I went to my gym pool for the first time in over two months perhaps? Last month, I had free Swimming for Triathletes lessons, and improved my times from 2:13 per 100/y to 1:46 per 100/y.  Amazing isn't it?!   The pool I used was really a competition pool (25y) vs. the gym pool (25m).

When I did my sets today, I felt like I was swimming in cement and upstream. I hated it. After swimming, my nose was just dripping pretty bad (chlorine sensitivity perhaps?), and never had that issue with the other pool.  I'm assuming that the gym pools are usually heavily chlorinated because people sometimes do the workouts at the gym, then jump in the pool and barely do swims, or jump in from the sauna/steam room.  Is there a difference between the consistency of various pool type (competition vs gym) that can affect your swims?

I'm considering of giving up the 1 mile drive to the gym and drive 25-30 minutes away for the other pool. There's also a 50m OUTDOOR competition pool along with the 25y indoor pool. It will cost me $36 for 30 visits.  I would continue the Swimming for Triathletes, but it's $46 for a month (8 swims) or $10 drop-in. That's a little out of my budget, but I will go back perhaps once next month just to polish up and have the coach check on my techniques.

What would you do? Give up going a mile from your house gym pool to go to a better pool?

You have to do what works best for you DJ, although the 50 meter pool is ideal for tri training with fewer turns.  A lot of the gym pools are warmer than competition pools so they have to keep the levels up.  Plus, there are different chemical programs like saline, chlorine or bromine.  The chlorine is more noticeable in most cases.  Nose plugs would help if you can tolerate them.

Nice to have choices though!

DJ - i feel your pain. I'm really trying to swim as much as possible right now and am using whatever water i can get myself into. Currently swimming in 4 places pretty regregularly.

1) a 25yd competition pool at a college thats about 40 minutes driving. I can only swim there 3 times a week, monday, Wednesday, Friday doe 1:00-1:15 with a masters group. When i can get there, it is by far the best swim workout of the 4. The water is cooler, they use real lane lines and competition pools disperse water so much better than gym pools. The downside is that it takes a toll on my schedule to get there (late for work and it makes it hard to get in bike rides) and its expensive. I could basically join a gym for what Masters costs.

2) gym pool - its closer to home and i could technically go every day, but the quality of the swim stinks. Its only 15yds long, too warm, too chlorinated, and sometimes the cloudiness worries me. The water bounces around so much in a gym pool that i end up drinking a good amount of that mess. But i go there when i must, since its< basically free since i pay for a "family membership".

30 OWS at a lake that i can drive to in 25 min or bike to in 60 min of mostly uphill. I get in about 1/week now and love it. Its about 750 yds each way at the narrowest end of the lake but its never as good a workout as in the competition pool. I just don't push it when I'm out in the way more dangerous open water. Plus, in another month or so, the lake will be so full of weeds that I'll either have to move to the river (motor boats to look out for) or quit OWS till next year.

4) my 44ft backyard pool. Its convenient and clean, but you cant really get your swim on. It good for drills though, and don't underestimate the importance of drills in dropping time...

Where was i going here? Oh yea, for me, the best combination is a competition pool filled with folks that are faster/better swimmers than me. But swimming is a hassle any way you slice it. The nice thing about running is just put on some shoes and run out the door. 25 min isnt that far when you think of all the nonswimming time you spend at a pool, getting changed/showers, etc. Good luck whereever you ggo

Back home after 3 weeks on vacation.  My workouts were few and far between - I always struggle with workouts when my schedule is off. Also the 100 degree heat was a major factor.  Nice run yesterday in 55 degree overcast weather - perfect!

I have a friend arriving tomorrow night for a week and then I'm away for another week - this time up to Fairbanks, AK.  I will end up spending more time away this summer than ever before and my training has definately been pitiful.

I still plan on doing the oly at the beginning of August though I will be way undertrained. Going to try really hard to get my workouts in till then.

Happy Training everyone!

Welcome back Robyn!

I'm really impressed with how a lot of you guys are getting it done in this heat!!  It's been REALLY bad!!  Especially, in the Midwest with the humidity.

Good luck to the racers this weekend!  We are supposed to cool off slightly, I hope it doesn't stay this hot for you this weekend!

Yep, racing in the rain is a bummer, especially if they change the race to a DU or shorten it at all.

Good luck to all the racers here this weekend!

I'm hearing they shortened the Muncie 70.3.  It's definitely not safe out there.  I overheated a bit on my run yesterday.  I sat on the patio with ice trying to cool myself down.  I was scared!  Actually got goose bumps and the chills!  Not something you normally get when it's 102 degrees! LOL!

Heat sucks.  Did 65 miles at 19 plus last Saturday.  I have another organized ride tomorrow.  Forecast is 100.  Planning to go early and go hard to get done.  SUCKS.

The Garmin 910XT is working great.  Really like it.  I've used it on the bike, run and open water swim.  Really good feedback. So far reliable.

I'm clicking on the workouts despite the heat.  Doing a lot on the computrainer but also outdoors to acclimate.  I have an Oly in a week.  It will not be wetsuit legal.   All good.

Hope everyone is well.  Life is sweet.

One other thing - the new Specialized Shiv - it rocks.  I took second at the Tuesday night Time Trials with 21.2 mph for 25 miles.  Temp was well over 90 with a long headwind so the conditions sucked too. Then I ran 30 mins.  Got up the next day July 4 and ran 5 miles at a ok pace in a run with 700 other people.  It was already 90.

Ice,

Have you played around with all the swim functions yet? This unit would be perfect for me since I swim mostly in open water.

used mine for an OWS last week.  Works flawlessly IMO.  I use mine at the pool too.  I don't mess around with hitting the lap button constantly all the time, but it's nice to see the breakdown when I do.  Mostly I use it because the outside pool at my gym doesn't have a lap clock.
