Kids tri is just 4 days away and preparations are underway. We decided to make this a 'destination' race  so we will be staying at a nearby hotel on Saturday night. Fun dinner out, etc. It will just be me and my 2 daughters, as Mom has volunteered to stay home with the new puppy.

we've had the bike checked, new sneakers, race belt fitting, transition practice, an actual tri practice, and in general, lots of fun. I'm hoping she really likes this. She isn't nervous (yet) but Dad is starting to get there . My older daughter is there to offer moral support, and to take advantage of the night out.  I'm SO looking forward to this. Will be a blast!

Alright, hi all, yes in CO now.  We got off to a very late start on Monday.  On Sat I bike 70 miles and ran 6.  On Sunday I ran 16 and then biked 20.  On Monday I swam 1500 and ran 6 miles.  I finished my workout packed all my stuff, the kids stuff and my wife had not yet started packing her stuff yet.  So then we had to do lunch because it had taken so long and then got out of the house around 1pm.  We camped in Nevada, pulling in around 11pm.  I let the boys pack up the tent and ran towards CO, told my wife to give me a 1 hour head start so that I could get in an 8 mile run for the day before we drove 800 miles.  My gut had been bugging me for a couple of days and was still bugging me on Tuesday.  Got in to CO around 10:30pm and slept in late.  I then went to the pool early to get in 1900 yards which was a really good swim. My first 9x100s were at 1:46/100 pace.  The slowest of the last 10 100s was 1:50.  My last go in the real pool had my typical 100s at 1:52, so yay seeing some nice improvement.  Of course my son who has been swimming for 3 weeks so far this summer did 100 in 1:47 (I beat him by 2 seconds).  Ah youth.  Then I did a 30 mile bike average 18mph in some strong winds. Oh and I now have over 3000 miles biked so far this year 8).

Larry, first awsome effort on your HIM and yay for no unplanned walking.  New shoes for your next race.  Yes after a HIM, low intensity first 2 weeks.  You can walk for the first 2-3 days, then you can do some short 3 mile jogs if you feel like it the first week, some slower 15 to 20 mile bike rdes and shorter 600 to 1000 yard swims slowly.  2nd week you can treat as a recovery week and by the start of the 3rd week you can start building for a HM or whatever you want to do after that.

Jim, I respect what your doctor has to say.  Your race is roughly 2 weeks away.  I would probably sleep alot, drink a lot of non etoh fluids and walk if you feel up to it a couple miles a day and maybe bike 10 to 15 miles or swim 1000 yards.  Just something to keep your body moving if you feel up to it and then see how you are feeling in 10 days.  I'm not saying screw wat your doctor said and go do the IM.  But I am saying that if it were me I might maintain some minimal activity and see how I feel a couple days before race day.  If you don't want to risk it then by all means don't do the race.  I just know that I would like to hold on to the dream up until the 11nth hour.

I plan to do the HITS Palm Springs Full, so if you are going I will be there.

Samantha you could do the HIM swim tomorrow, but 6 weeks would solidify your swim, your bike will take around 8 weeks to get ready for a HIM and your run will take roughly 12 weeks to be really solid for a HIM.  You could squeek by on 10 weeks total until doing a HIM.  If you can find one 12 to 16 weeks out that would be ideal and you could finish it being in very solid shape come race day.  If you find on that you want to do 10 weeks out you could complete it at a slightly slower pace.  Start looking for some races and see what works.  Even if you don't do a HIM this year you are at the point where building a solid IM base fitness level is reasonable.

Carol solid training as always, perfect outlook on training, life and racing.  You are almost ready to start your own mentor group, although I love to have you in mine.

Joe I used to live at Lake George.  You have time and I am sure you will rock your race.  A comple days here and there are not going to get in the way of your race day.

Elana, nice job getting in 53 miles.  Now for a short taper and you will be ready for race day.  With well rested legs and the crowd cheering you on you can get in those last several miles come race day!  YOU CAN DO IT!

Mike, enjoy your sprint tri.  I haven't done one of those since my verry first tri.  I should do one to see how fast I can do somehting of that distance, throttle on full from the gun.  Sprints are nice because you recover so fast, just boom flat out and then feeling fine in a day or two.

Hope I didn't miss anyone, tried to catch up as much as I could.  So mostly easy stuff for me with a long run of 12 miles on Sunday, long ride of 40 I think on Saturday.

Jim - I like Steve's advice. Maybe by race day you will be in a place to jump in. Who knows what might happen between now and then.

Mike - tell your daughter we are rooting for her and enjoy your weekend getaways with the girls.

Joe - thanks for your posts. It's great having you more involved these last few days. Your perspective is appreciated.

Steve - the HIM I was planning to sign up for is September 15, which is 8 weeks out including taper. I don't want to not sign up just because I am afraid I can't do it because I know everyone feels that way. When I decided on this race I thought I would have plenty of time to be ready for it. I have put in the miles every week, but I do not feel like I will be ready to do well. I might be able to barely finish it. I don't know. On the other hand I do feel like I am chickening out. But my time training on hills is minimal. I have been adding them in every week, but building in hills is hard work. Plus my run still has so far to go. The down side is I can't find another race this year that isn't a 20+hr drive. I am committed to CDAIM next year, but it seems important to get another long race in before that. Anyway, this is the me who is overwhelmed with trying to make decisions - races, bikes, swimwear, work, etc. Do you have any other thoughts/recommendations?

Glad you made it to Colorado! Sounds like a crazy trip. I am always very impressed with the ways you find to get your workouts in.

Samantha your swim and bike will be fine in 8 weeks.  Your run will be meh.  If you are fine with a slow pace an possibly some walking the last 2-3 miles then I think the 8 week is duable.  It is really the run that is the weeker spot at this point.  And only do a 2 week taper to buy you one more build week.  What I would probably do is get in 5 runs a week some can be as short as 1-2 miles.  They don't all have to be long but you can build them up. So if you add a bit more on your shorter runs and just build the longer run as planned you will be ok with a slower HIM run.  If you pace well you can do it.  You know I try to go conservative for a first HIM, but you are within tollerance for the lower end there, which just means slower pace.  Worst comes to worse you do some more walking. But if you go long runs of 6 (recovery week right?) 10,11.5, 8, 12.5, 14, 8 race or something like that.

Hey Guys, thanks so much!! I appreciate all the well wishes!! As I've said a few times before, this is a great group and I love being a part of it!!

Steve, absolutely! I am walking a couple miles each day because there is that glimmer in the back of my mind that I might be able to make this happen. I told the people I was going to house share with not to give my spot away just in case! I am moving forward with the assumption that this past couple months have been spent to prepare me for HITS in Dec. If you are going to be there, it would be great to be able to race with you so you DEFINITELY can count me in! I live an hour from Palm Springs so if you need a place to crash let me know! Also my Tri club (Canyon Lake Triathlon Club) is having their inaugural Canyonman a 1/2 and full Ironman on Oct 13th so I will do the half for warm up!  It'll will give me more time to be ready!

I'm getting back at it.  I ran 3 miles last night at a nice medium pace.  No heart rate monitor or worrying about zones.  It was a nice change.  I've got an easy 15 mile bike ride coming up this morning.  I'm going to focus on running the next few months, with a little biking mixed in.  The swimming will probably be put on the shelf till November.  Coaching high school football takes a great deal of time (30 plus hour a week).  The only time I have to work out is before work and Sundays.  I want to make sure my new lifestyle is in balance with my new life.  I'm going to do a HM December 1st to give me something to work towards.  Hope everyone's training is going good.  I cut back a little on food this week as training is decreased and lost another 4 pounds.  I'm down to 201 pounds, and have 16 to go to my goal.  I haven't weighed this little since I was a tackle on the football team in high school.

Hey Jim & Larry, way to bounce back...each of you in his own way!

Had a very nice group bike ride this morning.  It was just right for me....37 miles @ avg 16.2 mph.  I know that is slow to many of you, but your slow is my fast .  Then hubby & I headed over to the Pearl Izumi outlet in Ft. Worth.  He got a 2nd pair of bike shorts, I got a 2nd jersey, and we both got cycling gloves.  Tomorrow we will ride together early before church.  Oh, and it's 107 outside right now, which makes it nap time.

Love taper weeks only a 50 mile bike with a 6mile run brick in 100F temps.  Had all that ectra energy to go weedwacking my brother in laws yard.  Race day weather forecast is 97F with 10ish mph winds.  So since my shift cable broke during last race I have been worried about the other shift cable.  I also got a flat tire and well both tires were meh so so with the newer one having more nicks in the rubber.  So yesterday I cleaned the chain, replaced both tires and ended up replacing both tubes 2nd tube hada nossel issue that turned out to be not fixable and put in the new shift cable, which required much tweaking to get the shifting to work out smoothly.  My baby is ready to ride for race day, hope I don't find any more car tire shrapnal in the road.  CO is great people actually ride bikes, there are bike lanes and even bike shops.  Go figure.  I have my last longer run tomorrow, 12 miles and then things get much easier next week.  I is funny though, I go workout for 4-5 hours in 100F temps and I have more energy than my family who just went to the park for a couple hours.  I am glad that I am no longer a couch potatoe where jogging back to the car 1/4 of a mile for the camera would sap my energy for the whole day lol.  My brother in law has a pool in his housing complex, he swam as a kid, but does not know if he can swim 100 yards.  I'm all um you have a pool 200 yards from your front door, it is nearly 100F every day and you never use the pool?

Larry great news on the weight loss.  I wish I could drop 4 pounds in a week.  If I lose 1 pound in 2 weeks it is good.

Steve, sounds like things are going great.  I don't know how you handle the heat that well.  In my HIM it was brutal running in 90 degree heat with low humidity.

Just the best morning we could hope for today for the kids tri. My daughter had a great time, and finished in just over 28 minutes. I loved watching her participate, and I was probably more nervous than she was!

Here's a shot of my little tri-er after her finish!

Mike - Sounds like your daughter had a great intro to the sport. How does she feel about the day? Would love to see pictures.

Larry - Great job on your continued weight loss! Just think, you are two pounds away from being under 200 - that must feel incredible. Maybe this next week will be the rock over point. Keep it up!

Steve - your race is getting close. Your taper week is my build week. Can't wait to use my tracker to keep up with you while you're out there.

My week has been hard. New schedule was hard on my body and mind. Not sure what I will do because if I am as tired next week as I was this week...well like I said, I don't know what i'll do. This was a recovery week for me and I did more recovering than I planned, but I'm basically okay with that. Tomorrow morning I will do my first ever 50 mile bike. BTW Steve, I ordered infinit and will be using it tomorrow.

Steve – You sound sooo ready for your race. I can relate to the “run” back to the car scenario. Not that I would not run back to the car before but it would take 4x longer and sweat like crazy doing it. Now you are not even warmed up. I am glad to be off the couch too! Hopefully you can inspire your relatives.

Mike – What a great time you must have had with your daughters. Way to inspire them. I am sure they will do the same for you at some point. She looks like a real champ! Did she mind the body marking?

Carol – Happy biking! Glad you know how to deal with that heat because I would probably just be hiding.

Samantha – Way to stay focused through all this change. Enjoy the 50 mile ride!

Larry – Still is very cool all that you have accomplished and nice to see you are ready to keep it up.

Jim – Nice to hear the dream is still alive. Here is to a speedy recovery!

With the race on Saturday I can feel the excitement build some. Yesterday was fun as I broke up a bike ride into two loops. The first was 3.01 miles at 15.95mph (pretty good for me), and the last part is a hill of about 70-100 ft in about .3 mile which makes it tough. I stopped for a couple, drank .3 liters water and was back out for a second loop. The loop must have the same total climb but this time avoided the big hill for a much more gradual climb and made the 6.84 miles at 17MPH. Psych! That is definitely my fastest so far. Topped it off with a 5k in 32 and change, so, I am feeling pretty good about the race. This week will be final SBR of lower intensity. Have plans to meet a friend for packet pick up. He has run the race before so this will be nice to talk over last minute prep and nerves.

BTW, the scale has not been changing much lately but I have noticed the belt getting a bit loose. So, went belt shopping and actually fit in a 36” belt. Nice! A couple people have commented this week about my losing weight. So overall a pretty good week!

She didn't mind at all. She thought it was funny they wrote her number on each arm & leg as well as her age on her calf. Was done in the usual Sharpie, so she'll be sporting her race numbers at swim team practice today.

Here's a pic of some of the body marking action:

Love the photo MIke! Very cool to have your kids participate in a triathlon! The pride!!! Working on swimming with my kids.. Maybe a kids Tri in their future too. That would be awesome!!Well went on another camping trip. 5 days. Did some running & a lot of rock jumping (into the lake). I attempted an ow swim across the small lake too. Felt fear approaching so I side- stroked it. Didnt try ow again. On the last day I somehow bummed m knee too. Hyperextended it I think. Luckily no running in next weeks event but I'm wondering how it's going to feel on the bike. I'll know later.

Mike - I think you could put captions on those pictures: before something like "I got this" and after "That was easy". Very nice pictures.

Elena - Hope your knee is ok. I'd say throw some ice on it and take some aspirin. I have gotten a lot less proud about taking care of things early (I probably have a few years on you) and it has worked out well so far. My calf developed a bit of a charlie horse yesterday and as soon as I had a chance on went the ice. It is still sore today but maybe better than if I had done nothing. Have you done other OWS? That is the one part of my training which is lacking. No OWS. I do not foresee any issues but you never know.

I made it.  199.8 on the scale today.  It's a number I've had in my head since January 2nd, 203 days ago, when I weighed an even 300 pounds.  14.8 more to go.

It sounds like everything is moving along.  My 2 youngins will be doing their first tri's on Saturday.  Ah finally a real taper week 20 mile bike ride (flat) at 21 mph and I am done for the day, yay.

Nice weight loss.  With infinit you need to keep in mind that you can do the single concentration (2 scoops 300 calories) or you can doulbe concentrat it (4 scoops same amount of water 600 calories (2 hours of calories) or you can even tripple dose it (6 scoops 900 calories (3 hours of calories for a total 4 hour bike ride, what I use for a HIM).

Do watch that knee, use ice, baby it and see how it feels. Sometimes it is nothing, sometimes it is... an ongoing annoyance.

Larry - Best news of the day. You must feel light as a feather.

Mike - your daughter is so cute! I love that blonde hair.

Elena - I hope your kids get interested so we can cheer for them and Steve's kids too!

Steve - thanks for letting me know about the scoop thing. I definitely did not know that. And thanks for continually talking about infinit. What a great product. I really think it made a huge difference in my ride today. i felt fully fueled the entire time. I guess I took in 400 calories, which might have been more than I needed. What I really liked about infinit was no after taste and it didn't leave the back of my throat sticky like sugary drink/gels do. It was really refreshing. Glad to hear the taper is treating you well. what a nice break after so much training.

I would love to hear thoughts/recommendations on clipless pedals and shoes? Do any of you ride with gloves?

Great bike for me. Longest and first time hitting the 50 mile mark and it felt great. Pace was 15.46mph. Stayed in low gear for the first half to save my legs. Used high gear when my legs would allow it on the return ride. There were some slow down moments for water, stop lights, conversation with a fellow rider and to make sure the lady who ran into me with her bike was okay (I think she was). Thankfully my bike and I were alright as well. She was entering the trail from a parking lot and did not look to see if anyone was coming. I was too close, and going about 17mph, to do more than keep going and hope. Her front tire clipped my back tire and down she went. She was pretty upset. I told her I was sorry that had to happen, but she wasn't interested in talking to me. So off I went. Could have been so much worse. Drank one (2 scoops) bottle of infinit, ate one GU and drank water often. Seemed sufficient, but want to double check. My left lat, of all muscles, was starting to bother me. 8 miles from the end my knees started complaining and I was ready to get off that seat.
