Jackie- At risk of sounding repetitive, what you are going through right now is pretty normal and as someone more famous than me once said, "This too shall pass"

30 min spin warm up for TRX class, 30 min tabata training on TRX then 40 mins running "The Sierra Nevada Mountains" on dreadmill. I'm loving the new virtual running programs on some new treadmills at our Y. Variance of speed and incline based on the video of the terrain. Pretty cool. Way better than staring at the cinder block wall for the duration on the run.

Master 1609 Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Gabe - this is awesome! First time ever? Wow. I miss the snow btw. ---------- Almost 3hr run this morning. And since my approach to running is quite the opposite of Jackie's - this felt like pulling teeth. A thought: if overrunning and running too little produce similar results - I vote for running less. This gives me more time during the week for other things. Mitch Swim 3 - Bike 15 - Run 20 - Rest 5 - Total 38 Time 29:51:38 Edited by markz 2013-01-25 4:50 PM |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Help with Not Finishing Runs jackiep - 2013-01-24 7:46 PM I need advice! I'm in week 16 of the Hanson plan. Things have been going reasonably well for the first 14 1/2 weeks. This past Sun, I did not do the planned 18 miler, would have been my second. This one had the middle miles at MP. I managed to get through 12 (3 WU and 9 at MP) and then ran and walked 2 more. Then I bailed out and got a ride back to the car. I took 3 days completely off. Today was a planned 12 miler. 2 WU, 8 at MP and 2 WD. I haven't even uploaded the workout yet. It was awful. Now it was warmer than it's been and slightly windy, but I just didn't want to be out there. I almost decided that I wasn't doing a marathon and didn't even want to train for tris anymore. I came back and had a pep talk from my virtual running partner who I plan to run the marathon with. I felt a little better. I just don't know whether to take more days off and keep losing fitness, or just push through it or maybe there's a third alternative. Suggestions? I get those feelings about not wanting to train any longer and sometimes just taking an extra few days off resolves the problem for me. Taking a few days off really isn't going to cause much loss if any in fitness. It seems that your body is telling you something right now though so you should listen to it. Lately when I have to get up in the morning to do a workout I just don't want to do it either. But then I start thinking about my goal of completing an IM and know that I want to enjoy the day of the race rather than be miserable that does help me some. Something else lately I have been doing is telling myself I will do just one more set in my workout and then I am done. When I get done with that set I say to myself that wasn't too bad so I will do one more. That has helped me through the workouts. But there are days that I am headed to the gym for a swim and I turn around and go back to work just because my mind wasn't feeling it. I feel guilty somewhat for missing the workout but I think that even though I missed it I missed it because I needed that break away to recover mentally and physically. Sometimes I do the workout I missed on another day and I actually have a good workout that is a productive one. I guess I always have tried to go by this: moderation is the key to success. Don't overindulge in something and you won't have the negative effects. Such as burnout from working out, burnout from working too many hours, overeating and gain weight, not eating enough and losing too much weight and getting sick. It does seem to work for me quite well. I have a friend who will set a goal for something and become obsessed with it. If during the process of the goal something happens that isn't in align with it, he at times will quite working towards his goal instead of overcoming the problem and just moving forward. Hopefully this will help you realize that there are times things just don't happen as you want them to happen, although I am sure you already know that but might just need to be reminded. Your pep talk with your virtual running partner probably said similar things to you. Best of luck though with your training. |

Veteran 112 Wollongong | Subject: RE: Help with Not Finishing Runs Happy Australia Day everyone! Did the Australia Day Aquathon this morning. 0:33 swim and 0:35 run. Did my normal, I'm going to drown, panic at about the 250m mark, just as I got swamped by the wave behind. Ended up having to hold onto the paddle board for a few minutes to get my breathing under control. mmm, really have to work on this. The run was really great. As I was so slow getting out of the water I just lined up the runner in front and chased them down, then started on the next one. Just a game of chasing. Did ok I think but the swim was terrible. No panic attacks but the river was so full of jelly fish(non stinging type) you could almost walk on the water. As i was swimming they ended in your hand on your face and over your back, not very plesaent at all. Took me about 600m before I had settled enough to start breathing bi-lateral. He insists that more than 30 minutes on a trainer does nothing for you and is a waste of time. The only "real" way to improve on the bike is on the road. Personally, I think he is full of it, just because of my own gains on the bike the past two winters. But, I wanted to hear what you think.

Jim, I'm not a big fan of the trainer only because I think it's less exciting than a treadmill and the weather here is good enough that you can get out all year around. Having said that it's pouring rain this morning and I did want to do a bike session today so I may have to dig mine out There are definitely pluses though, you can define exactly what type of session you want to do. Easy MAF, intervals, HR ladders up and down, Sufferfest, just a spinning recovery, etc etc. And no traffic or weather issues. It's not the same as being on the road, you need that for bike handling skills, riding in a group, wind, hills, weather, getting used to varying road surfaces but the trainer is still good training. Just my $0.02 |

Fantastic job in finishing. I seem to be with you at the moment, any swim without a panic attach is a good swim. |

I say he's completely full of it. I think one of the top pro's (Matty Reed?) trains almost exclusively on the trainer. I've moved almost all my workouts to the trainer because of traffic issues, daylight issues, etc. I plan on going to one of the local metro parks for longer rides in the spring and summer, but that can be a real time suck when I'm used to getting all my workouts done by early in the day... |
