I am back in the US after an overnight flight from Sao Paulo. I slept maybe 4 hours. Much coffee and a shower and then the drive to get the dog and check on JWKMH's mother. And on to Oak Ridge. We should be home by 7pm. Long day. The trip to see the granddaughter was great. It was like instant replay. This child looks and acts like her mother at the same age. Still thinking about how fun we had talking to her. She is learning both Portuguese and English as the same time. She is already associating certain people with certain words. It is amazing. Her English vocabulary is about 50-100 words. The Portuguese is larger. I need to start increasing my Portuguese vocal. TW i wanted to go to brazil so badly but the husband vetoed it because he said it was unsafe. how did you like it? With my daughter and granddaughter in Sao Paulo, we go frequently. Our son-in-law is from Sao Paulo so we have a knowledgable guide to keep us away from areas that could be unsafe. They live in an area called Itaim which is a nice neighborhood. It is sort of like living in New York City. We can walk to restaurants in the neighborhood. It is reasonably safe. Other parts of town, someone who looked American or wealthy would be a target. If you stay in a nice hotel, they provide doorman and other security for guest safety. Most tourists go to the beaches (there are thousands of good ones) or to Rio. It is a different experience. We generally go to a family-style pousada which is a bed and breakfast small hotel on the beach. We go to places that are family friendly so usually groups are three generations traveling together. Most of the places do not speak much English but my daughter and son-in-law take care of us. Janice has learned enough for many situations. Brazilians love the beach vacation and really know how to do it well. It is very relaxing and beautiful. We have been to two beaches so far. Praia do Forte and Ubatuba. Praia do Forte is remote and quiet. Ubatuba is close (130 miles) to Sao Paulo so it is more urban. We have not been to Rio yet. If you like snorkeling, surfing, eating seafood, Brazil beaches are the place to go. Brazil is a combination of the United States in the 50's and the wild west of the 1890's. The country has huge lower class that is pushing up into the middle class so that is like the 50's. But government services are lacking and my SIL says the country in general lacks planning and is plagued by corruption and waste. People just do what they want without regard to regulations which is what I mean by wild west. |
