Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by gadgetlaw Originally posted by kenj I know! I do trust the plan. My plans worked the past 2 years for my halfs. This Full thing is just something new and crazy! When I let those doubts creep in, I try to remind myself of my successes in the past! Sometimes it is just harder than others! So, speaking of all this nutrition stuff, my plan has been to just keep doing what has worked on my halfs previously. Basically, I have been practicing using the same things in the same amounts per hour that I did before. Is there some basic issue that I am missing for a Full or do you guys think that will work? Karen Just trust the plan Karen! Great work! The best part of long run training is hopping in the shower and finding where the chaffing was this time! This week I bought a new fuel belt so the chaffing was around the hip pointers! I had always heard that herding cats was challenging, but have never tried it!
Other than the PB in special needs, my plan for the full is the same as the half. The biggest problem most people have with that is tolerance of the same taste and usually warmer drink or gel. But you should have some opportunities to test it out on your long bikes and runs. It might be a good idea to test a couple of alternative plans too, in case race day throws you a curve. Special needs is a great place to have an alternative drink or some fig newtons or something like that as an alternative. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by RunningJoke Enjoying the nutrition discussion from here as well. I've GOT to get this figured out for my HIM as well. I like the Hammer gels/ Heed and the EFS liquid shots, I just have to get them in!! And I need some longer training sessions to practice. Thankfully, did not seem to need much recovery from my sprint race this weekend. I'm trying to stay consistent with my strength training, though, and THAT makes me sore. Looking forward to a hard bike ride tomorrow and a good run on Friday. Jaime Nice work Jaime! Enjoy the training!! If you use a computer with alerts, like one of the Garmin products, set up a 5 mile bike alert, or 15 minute alarm or something and use that as a reminder to take in some nutrition. Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by ramiedd Great week for me so far. Getting all of my planned workouts. 1 mile swim on Tuesday and 1.25 mile swim this morning. Happy about starting that build up after only being in the pool a few times this year. Off tomorrow and long ride Saturday morning... 90 minute run yesterday and started to test and did Gatorade only for the run. Next week I will try 1 gel before and one half way with water and see how that takes me through it... Thanks again for all of the thoughts and advise. Great work Eddie! |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by trei Air temperature was in the upper 40s this morning in northern Wisconsin. I bagged my open water swim and instead did a short brick with gloves and a headband on. My toes still got cold. I have an open water swim race this weekend: Bayfield to Madeline Island via Lake Superior (2.1miles). The race director has said the water temps are hovering around 60-61* (quite a bit colder than usual). I feel an ice cream headache coming on! My nutrition plan for Ironman is probably weird by most standards: coconut water for hydration and dates for nutrition along with some saltstick capsules. It has worked well for me on my long training rides. I plan to live off the course more for the run. i have some concern about that as has been indicated; its hard to know what you will tolerate at that distance. Todd Brrr! That sounds cold! You can double up the swim cap or get a neoprene cap to help keep your head warm if you haven't thought of that already. Just surprised to need one in August! |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Nutrition is just very individual. I followed the same nutrition plan for 3 HIM and the first 2 no problem but this year - I was desperate for more calories. I plan to use EFS drink, gel flask, some larabars and then live off the course - I like the Perform and IMMT will be have Stinger Wafers -- yum!! Easy 2500 in the pool (yeah in and out in an hour--- haven't been this quick since the winter!) Then an hour on the trainer later today. Looking forward to my 2 hour ride/30 min run on Saturday -- I'll actually be home on a Saturday morning by 9am...I could get use to this!! |

That is a good point about the same plan not working for every race. Sometime temperature extremes, both hot and cold, can force a game day change. |

The other one needed a dental so we got that done yesterday. Had to take the one with the ACL tear for her lazer treatment last night. Fingers crossed this works! Hoping to get something in this week. Not sure though. Otherwise, just wait for the long rides on the weekend. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Okay, so I have to show off my new ride. It's 7 gears worth of folding bad-a$$ that I just got from someone on Craig's list. I've had an ongoing ordeal trying to find a gym that works for me as a "super-commuter" (that's what they call knuckleheads in NY that travel and hour and 45 min each way to work each day). So I finally buckled and joined a gym "near" work. The problem in NYC is finding a gym with a pool. A few weeks ago I joined a great gym with a 25yd pool, but it's across town. So when I get off the commuter train, which is right next to the office, I've been using Citibike to get across town. Its a new thing here where once you join, you pick up a bike at one of many docking stations and return it to any other docking station. It's a great concept and there are plenty of bikes when I get off the train at 5:50AM, but none when I leave the gym at 8:00. Everyone wants one at the same time, so I took matters into my own hands. This will ride the train with me in the morning and if I start to get ambitious, I can ride it from my house to the train station. I still need to figure out something for the winter though :-). I guess that's what subways are for. A lot more than my roadie or tri bike... about 28lbs. And the chain has to be another 6. But this is no town to use a rinky-dink chain. Ken, I'd love to use it at Peasantman, but that might be taking the "everyman's tri" a bit too far |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed School me a little bit on HR. I think I got it pretty much down, but some things are throwing me off a bit. I've been doing quite a bit of trainer rides lately, I'm putting a bit faith that they're helping with my outdoor endurance rides as well as increasing cadence/power outdoors. Its another month of this. Anyways, I cannot seem to duplicate my HR for the same RPE for both indoors and outdoors. Its about 15-20 beats lower on the trainer for same effort. Is this normal? I know speed is out the door (although it makes me a sad panda that I'm avg'ing 3-4mph slower!). Should I be worried or should I increase my effort to get to close to road simulations? The other problem I'm having is getting to higher power without grinding/mashing or hyperspining (high rpm). I have to find a middle ground and its annoying. And the numbers end up a little bit skewed. Anyone else notice this? Same tire pressure every time. Cycleops Fluid 2 and Trainer road are what I'm using. |

Cycleops Fluid 2 and Trainer road are what I'm using. My avg. HR is usually a bit higher inside but that is a function of uphill and down hill. I do hit higher high HR outside climbing, All of this is variable though temp and humidity changes. That is why I like power as it doesn't change much inside vs. outside. I think if your HR isn't as high, try some harder effort intervals to start with and build from that. Speed and the trainer is goofy. I get a different result with my trainer wheel than my normal wheel. My cyclops is also higher than the kurt kinetic I had too. You are doing great DJ!! BTW, I think I am coming to Vegas in November for a meeting at the NY NY. |

Figuring out the best way to organize clothing, food and necessities (vaseline, body glide, blister band aids, ibuprofen!) It was wonderful having both weekend workouts end before 9:30am -- today was just a 7 mile run - home before nine - and it was actually chilly - wore a long sleeve shirt! 3000m swim in the am. |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I am 4 weeks out from IMWI and the coach put the hammer down this weekend. Saturday I did a 183 km ride (113.5 miles) in 6:17. I was practicing my nutrition/hydration strategy. There was just shy of 4000 ft of elevation gain. This gives me a lot of confidence going into the bike portion. Sunday it was 60 minutes on the bike, a quick transition to a 90 minute run (11 miles), then I hopped in my wetsuit and did a 90 minute open water swim. Tomorrow is a off day. I am going to sleep into 7:00am and just enjoy the day. I think I will take my NSX to work. |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Thanks Ken! I probably can ask to borrow a power tap wheel for a while, and see how that works. When I do the harder intervals, I can get my HR to 160-165 but it takes quite a lot of effort, yet outside, easily done. Awesome you're coming to Vegas! Have a bit of brag....because of the trainer times and getting more comfortable riding in trainer for longer times, I'm going to volunteer for my LBS's booth at Interbike and do various demos and such. No idea exactly what it entails, and I will get free pass into Interbike and some "sweet" swag from the shop. I believe this was the highest bike volume week (200 miles and 12.5 hours). Whooooot! Totally unplanned. Some easy some moderate. This is the first time in quite a long time that my legs feel quite trashed....last 10 miles were a bit painful, and glad I just pushed through. . This week I will try to keep it light. Happy Training week everyone! |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Nice job Devinci and DJ. Those are some solid training numbers! DJ, my HR is always a little higher outside. I just get excited to ride outside and the adrenaline flows. It's even higher when I trail ride, almost 10bpm on avg. HR is just inconsistent. Inside, it takes me forever to warm up and it's difficult to get it up to my higher ranges. Had an interesting weekend here. I got in what I could since the dog and her treatments are taking up most of my time during the week. I went on my normal LTF ride Saturday and met a Scott bike rep. WOW...did he bring some sweet bikes out! Then it just so happened we were both planning on getting out on the trails Sunday. So he met me at the local trails and broughs some of the top of line MTB's out there. Man....was I smitten with these bikes! LOL Had a good ride in the trails. I did go over the bars once and ended up bruising my shoulder up. But nothing bad. The worst part was getting stung by a mud wasp. Darn thing hit me right in the bottom lip while I was hitting the single track!! That thing hurt like !@#$!!!!!!!!! Introduced my cousin, who's been a good training partner with me, to MTB'ing. I got him into tri's last season and he's been out with me on the road a lot. I'm not sure he got over the nervousness of being on the dirt. I hope he had fun, but I think it may take a day to think about it since he was so nervous the whole time. Got another busy week ahead. Taking the dog for treatments. Going to try and look at a new car tuesday night if the one I want is still available. Hopefully, that works out. Haven't had anything but a boring SUV for a while.
