Flight home cancelled--all rebooked with fingers crossed that I don't get bumped again. Upside is that I can now get in my planned long run outside in the warmish Orlando weather and not at the indoor track. Read an article the other day that exercise helps cure and prevent depression. I don't know about that, but it sure does help me to roll with the punches more.

Fruits/Veggies: I'm at 19/15 with cherries, red grapes, red peppers, asparagus, and cabbage today (along with many of the others previously mentioned). That should offset the 2 bowls of Lucky Charms I just wolfed down. I picked up "vacation cereal" for the kids for their February vacation which is next week (we don't really get sugar cereals almost ever) and I dug it out and had at it.
I rationalized it would probably be my only shot because once they discover it, it will be gone in two days. LOL

Ack! I'm getting aerobars tomorrow!! I stopped by the LBS and chatted with the guy who did my fitting last summer and he actually recommended Profile Design Jammer GT aerobars as I have a road bike and zero desire to start messing with swapping out seat tubes, etc every other day. Not as sexy as the carbon setups I've seen but I already bought new handlebars last summer (narrower for my female frame) and couldn't justify another set. (in addition to the fact that I've been told by many that carbon bars don't get you that much of a gain for the price point - $ is better spent elsewhere) If anyone has any experience with the Jammer, please let me know - pros and cons! My longest distance races will probably be HIM as I just do not have the time to train for a full at this point.

Cheers all!

Jenn - where do you find CHERRIES at this time of the year and in such a cold weather where you live??

I've been tinkering with my swim (I su%@ - and my times have dropped to 2:30x100) and am going to take 5th up on his suggestion of giving total immersion a try. If you get any good tips from your coach - please pass them on.

Have a better day!

Dave, me and both of my kids read Total Immersion and watched together a series or 7-8 videos on youtube about the book: probably the best that has happened to us in improving our swimming!

No swim or bike this week as been in countries where you can either only run in the hotel (no sidewalks or free space to run, believe it or not) or in the middle of a dessert storm like this morning, but did not mind - sunglasses protected my eyes, although I had sand all down my throat (and sand does not count as a veggie, right?

My vote is for #6

Hope you are having a great weekend!

Check-In: 4/? for the week. I did 8 mile long slow distance this morning before the snow hit us. It was 15 degrees F when I started, so my gear mentioned in my earlier post works down to at least 15 degrees F. Sorry, I forgot the pic. I started with a balaclava, but just used it as a hat after about 1.5 miles. The snow started on the drive home...perfect timing.

Veggies: 10/15 because I made myself a smoothie after my run. Kiwi, strawberries, oranges, banana.

Gretchen Sorry about your delay, but enjoy that run in the warmth. I'm ready for spring.

About the Bike Porn It seems to me that the triathletes tend to start in one discipline (usually their best) and branch out into the others. I didn't start in the bike world, so I was nervous last September when deciding on my first bike since I was 16. It'll get me to the finish line, but it's definitely more Honda Civic compared to the Ferrari's I'm seeing in the pictures. So my question is.....what have I gotten myself into? If it turns out that I really like doing these triathlons, I fear the tug of war between my desire, my wife, and my wallet...because I want that Ferrari?

This is the Honda Civic in case you're curious: http://hybridbikeresource.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/918mPRGJzR...

Heya folks!

I just got back from an impromptu ski trip with my sister - being unemployed does have its benefits. No training while I was away, and I ate, in a word, poorly, but oh well. Still hovering at ~200lbs.

I did have a few nice local beers, including some pretty rough IPAs, a nice wheat, a solid hefeweizen, and then I met up with my sister's boyfriend and his dad, whose tastes run, if anything, darker than mine. Had a dark wheat that was really chocolaty, a bourbon--barrel-aged stout that was surprisingly good, and a quad that was truly, truly lovely. I wish I could remember the names, but after the beer, they opened some bottles of whiskey, and my memory went down from there. He *collects* whiskey, with something around a thousand bottles. The only ones I can recall was a Amrut Fusion and Crown Royal Cask No. 16. I am ruined for well drinks forever.

******

Today was a day I have been dreading - a date with the trainer and a 20 minute FTP test. I am surprisingly happy with the results. My last actual test was a year ago (to the day), and today's 20min average was 236, compared to 243 last year. I didn't test at all during the IM build last year, but I would estimate my peak FTP was around 260. Overall, my FTP a year ago was 231, to 260, to 224 today. Given how far I feel off the wagon this winter, a 10% loss in power is very much acceptable. The extra weight is killing my running though.

At this point, I'm 12 weeks out from Challenge Knoxville, and I still haven't registered. I am going to let the next four weeks make the decision, and if I can keep doing what I need to do, hopefully in three months I'll be crushing some hills in the great state of Tennessee.

I got in workout number 4 today with a short little 20 minute threshold run to fire my systems back up from a week of not running and a stomach virus. As is normal with me when I'm coming off an illness my heart rate was about 10bpm faster than normal at pace. Hopefully by first of next week it will settle down.

Juan - frozen cherries for my smoothie. I'd love fresh but it will be a few months.

8/? With a spin this morning. Skiing all day tomorrow - the temps will actually get into double digits! Yea!

I vote #5 - I like the interlocking rings. I'd be fine with either though.

I got a doggie.... I got a doggie...

Meet Ralphie!
22mo Golden Retriever.
Great with the kids. Totally housebroken. Fetches balls like a boss and apparently, a 3.3mi run is just a warmup for him.

(I'm on my phone...I will post a pic when I can???)

Beautiful dog! Good luck with the fetching and runs. My dog will play fetch as long as you will throw the ball (record is 2.5 hours) and then ask for more later! She also gives me the "why are you so slow" look when we go for runs, but I wouldn't trade my training partner for the world!

Gorgeous Dog!

My running partner is starting to slow down (she's ~9ish) and I've been wondering if we should add a younger dog so she can keep napping. She still loves going running and gets super excited when I get my shoes, but is a lot slower than she used to be.

Kurt, beatiful dog!!

Today did 2 hours on the bike, not a great ride after long distance traveling this night, but felt great after finishiing - it still amazes me that when you are tired before training (swim/bike/run/whatever), you feel significantly better afterwards!

Veg/Fruits - 15/15 after lunch (lettuce, tomatos, soya sprouts, apple)

I am not the best one to do the shirts as shipping from Spain would increase the cost, but have bought some shirts from Pactimo.com and quality is exceptional (they do customized shirts)

Hope you all had a great weekend, Sandy hope life is smiling you again!

Juan, great suggestion! I have Pactimo stuff I like too! Doesn't look like their customs are too expensive and they have a low minimum. And everyone can just order themselves and they ship direct so it's really easy.

Good morning all, and happy Friday!

I woke up this morning and did a little strength workout in my living room (this makes me 5/6...Dave, you better get working!). My phone told me it was 2 degrees this morning but the wind chill was -15. Most schools in the area are on a 2 hour delay because of these record lows. I know some of you experience this regularly in the winter, but I honestly don't know how you do it. I hope everyone is staying warm!

My stew last night turned out delicious, and I had a little cantaloupe, which makes me 10/15. I didn't make my shake this morning, but I'm going to try to remember to make it Sunday. I head to my parents in PA straight after work, so we will also see what they have around their house, although they don't usually have much during tax season (my mom is a CPA).

I hope everyone stays warm! I love seeing how active everyone is regardless of the cold weather. Happy training!

Nicole - I got my workout in... It wasn't swim/bike/run - but I got in a walk and 20 minutes of snow shoveling. Plus - I was shoveling for my mother so how can you find fault with me.

I'm 100 laps and several beers into the Daytona 500. Gonna be hard to get off the couch but the idea of getting a browns logo onto your page should do it.

Hey everyone,

Dave, nice work getting your workout in! I will allow it, because my workout today also consisted of shoveling at my parents house. They always put me to work when I go up there :-/ haha when I finished I did some squats and some planks.
Shoveling was quite rough. Friday I actually wrecked my car while driving up to PA. Pretty sure my car is totaled, and my shoulders, neck, and lower back are quite sore. I also sprained my thumb. Overall though I am okay and it definitely could've been much worse. I think I should know by tomorrow whether it is totaled or not. If it is, I might wait a couple months to get a new one. Save some money and get more exercise in by walking around the city.

I haven't had a chance to catch up on everyone's messages from the weekend, but will try to get to that now. Do we have a challenge for the week?

Check-In: 7/? I wanted to do another personal tri like last weekend and I had enough time to just squeak it in. 800 meter 20 minute swim; 45 minute 8.75 mi bike ride; 39 minute 3.1 mi run/walk. I ran out of juice towards the end. I realize I didn't fuel up properly for this one. Gotta fix that next time. I forgot my goggles and did this one without...my eyes have been killing me all night. That should help me learn to remember them next time.

Veggie Challenge: 16/15 This one was harder than I thought, but I snuck in under the wire after going out to eat tonight. Green Beans & Broccoli (yesterday), red peppers, celery, spinach, spring mix salad.

Nicole Sorry about your car. Glad to hear you're ok.

This group is having some problems lately. Hopefully the injuries and the car problems end here. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I didn't hurt myself after falling on the ice while running yesterday. Luckily my left butt cheek still has enough padding to absorb the impact.

Weekly update:

I am alive and survived our 18 hours of winter. Unfortunately, the flu decided to visit our household this past week. Completely derailed any training and meal planning. Hopefully the worst is behind us and this week will see a return to normal. On a positive note, I did weigh in at 283, which is my lowest of the year, so thank you flu?

I vote for Version 5 on the jersey.

I vote for #5.

Headed to the gym this morning after leaving work, figuring the crowds would be light at 6:30 on a Sunday morning with snow dumping and temperatures hovering around 8 degrees. Perfect time for an unimpeded swim. Nearly empty parking lot- good sign. Two people on treadmills, one lifting weights- another good sign. Nine people in the pool. Apparently we all had the same thought. Oh well, still got 1200 in and the rest of the swimmers cleared out pretty quickly, so I didn't have to share a lane for too long. We'll see how it is for my run Monday morning.

I think I voted already. I like the interlocking rings.

Epic ski day yesterday!! Temps in the double digits (back to negs and singles today - high of 2). But 12" of freshies and we skied woods all day! The boys had smiles ear to ear and I'm so proud of how well they handled the trees. I love days like this.

Get healthy people!! Positive vibes going your way!!

Juan, you are solid for getting that ride in!! Well done!!
