Back at it to.... Back to the grind.

Trying to find a way to get some runs in at work. I have 60 mins off for lunch, no showers or anything here at work to use. And in an industrial area. I can drive about 10 mins away and maybe put in a 5k run and 10 mins back though. Thinking a bag with wash cloth, baby wipes and other things to clean up.

It is cold so not much sweating going on here right now... But I need to figure it out.

I am supposed to run tonight but think I might spin with a friend instead.

SSMinnow - 2011-01-10 9:32 AM Great job Trevor.

Hope you Southerners are able to deal with the snow....do you even have boots?   While it's cold in  Madison, I see the grass....supposed to get around 2" of snow over the next two days, but for us that's nothing.  Makes me feel like Spring is in the air so I've been pulling out my shorts....oh yeah that's for the trip to Hawaii which is 18 days away!

I am short can you stuff me in your luggage for a trip to Hawaii... ?

Might be a nice place to learn how to run further then 10km for me.

TrevorC - 2011-01-10 10:01 AM current Calgary weather:
0 F , with windchill -18F.... I did my small bike ride in to work. Friggin cold. Hands felt like ice cubes after the 15 minutes. But hey, didnt pay $25 to park. We pay so much to park here. Unreal.
Crazy storm that hit here this weekend. Highways are closed. Blowing snow. People trapped in their cars.
Good times.

There is some mental toughness!

$25 per day is pretty steep...

Great job Trevor.

No, I don't.  At least not warm boots.  We will have a high of 41 on Wed with a low of 25.  That is butt COLD for here.   Our average high has been 61-71 this winter which is pretty mild for us but anything below 70 has me pulling out sweaters and my sweats not SHORTS.   Heck, I'm still waiting on my oak trees to loose the last of it's leaves.

Enjoy the snow, southern peeps! Be safe! And if you go running, be careful!!

Kids are hoping that the potential snow event tomorrow night will happen... I'd rather have the kids in school on Wednesday but I'm down with a snow day if it happens. We are out of cookies anyway, so a snow day would be a good excuse to do some baking.

George, thanks for the reminder to do some race registrations. I was thinking the same thing yesterday in the pool... sucks to know you plan to do a race and then drag your feet on entering and end up paying $20+ more in fees!!!

Fatty-pretty sure I have a pair or two that would fit Jacy!!!!

Spanky-would love to have you tag along, but the man has give me a one suitcase limit since we have a W&D in the condo!  Running in Kauai is pretty awesome.  I'm trying to be super good and heal up fast so that I can do some long runs...last year I was "walk 2 minutes, run 2 minutes" which was FRUSTRATING!

All this talk about race registration makes me wish we were doing a race together sooner than May and everyone was going to be there....I've signed up for my primary triathlons (REV3 70.3, Racine 70.3 and IM WI) if anyone wants to jump on the bandwagon.

Ok who is good with Running information and data analysis. I would like to look at my run on Saturday that I have logged here with all my Garmin data and talk about my heart rate zones and maybe what I did or didn't do right.

According to it I spent most of my time in Zone 4 which isn't right for a longer/endurance run. Mind you I was Just into that zone by about 1-2 beats most of the time my heart rate was 148-149 and slipped a bit more into the 152 range at the end with some speed work here and there. But my average BPM was 139 for the overall work out. Slow Warm up before I let my heart rate fully come up I was running 7:45/km for about 5 min until I was warmed up a bit.

Take note 8KM really is a longer run for me, you can see by my pace I am not setting records here but I WANT TO DO THINGS RIGHT.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/blog-HRGraphs.asp?memberid=187496&date=1/8/2011&createdate=1/8/2011&sport=Run&eventid=43880322&time=12:29:00 PM

I reviewed this data from what I know, and I read this into it.

1. I pushed just a bit harder then I should have for an endurance run Micmillan Cal said I should run approx 7:12 -7:22/km based on my 5k race time. I ran it just a bit faster 7:03/km I believe

2. This would not be the way to push through even longer runs I should slow down just a bit more to keep my heart in Zone 3. Truthfully I would have run a bit faster if the snow wasn't holding me up a bit, I suspect my BPM would be a few less if I wasn't in the snow.

3. I have never done a lactic threshold test, but heart rate is heart rate right?

4. What could I have done to improve or change this in your mind?

Feel free to ask more questions

Forgive me for being an idiot, but 1) how long have you been running, 2) how did you get your HR zones? and 3) when you say long/endurance run what do you mean?  Want to make sure I understand before weighing in from the peanut gallery.

John is the data man in the group so he may chime in but I have a question...

If you haven't done the LT test, how are you determining your HR zones?  What are you using to tell you what zone 4 is for you at your current fitness level?

First I was FAT 265 ish and 5'6" back in April of last year 2010. I did the couch to 5k with biking and swimming some I am now 215 ish.

Long to me is 10km.. as in that is the furthest I have run about 3 times now. But several runs in the 7-9 km range until fall. Then it all slipped for a bit and turned into 4-5km runs when the weather was nice and More now that I picked up some winter running gear.

My HR was determined via the whole max heart rate minus AGE thing... ya ya. I know not the best but it was the tool I had at the time.

My old resting heart rate used to be 78 BPM and it is now in the 48 BPM range in the morning but more 53 bpm  when sitting still through the day.

I am 36 years old. and I am Cute....does that really matter? sorry shameless plug. Oh but I am married too so single flirty men back off... Flirty women I am ok with.

Thanks in advance for advice help and well whatever.

YOU CAN"T ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS THAT I DO!   If HR was caculated off of Polar One data which I know someone used in this group, probably not great.  I will say I know plenty of people who don't calculate LT when they first start to run (including me for a few years).....getting a Maffetone book on HR training isn't a bad place to start in that event.

I agree with Suzy,  not neccessary to do an LT test right away.   I used Maffetone when I first started training. If you used Maffetone's formula, then your zone 2 max would be about 150?   (rough estimate)...then you would have been right at high zone 2 on your run the other day.  RPE is also a great way to judge where you are.  I know when I hit zone 4, I am huffing and puffing pretty hard and I couldn't do much more than grunt if you asked me a question.  Zone 3 I can string about 3 words together but it's not fun to talk there.

There is also Karvonen which you can scroll down to in the link below, and it takes into account resting heart rate, maybe plug your values in and see what it comes up with?  I think either of those are more reliable than 220-age.

LT test is good, but it is really hard to do.  I am pretty sure I injured my heel doing it because my body was not ready to run that hard for 30 minutes straight.  Heart rate IS heart rate, but your heart rate at 36 years old can be very different from another 36 year old guy, regardless of weight, height, etc...that's why i think the 220-age thing is so unreliable.  Maffetone's is a bit better, because it takes into account whether you are exercising regularly. Karvonen's takes into account rHR, which is somewhat a measure of fitness, too.

keep up the great work spanky!!!   the data is awesome, for sure.  we'll crunch it all soon enough.  but for now just go freakin' run baby!!!!!   and if you can't have a conversation with yourself, slow down.

Thanks you must have missed the part where I said I was an ENGINEER. (insert Engineering jokes here) I over think data ALL the time. All my non Engineering friends tell me to STOP it all the time. I have spread sheets on everything..

You can't even begin to know how many different friends have sent me this youtube Dilbert Clip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmYDgncMhXw

As for my HR as mentioned in other post by Suzi etc.

Thanks a lot.  I use the 220-age way. I will look into the others.   RPE doesn't really work for me, I can't seem to be a judge on that and it is too subjective and change change day to day for me, or anyone probably. HR off my Garmin is right there in front of me and REAL data I can process easy and adjust.. Rather then trying to talk or sing a song while running.

Besides both my work out partner and my wife say I am not allowed to sing.

But good info I will look at the other methods. I was reading about the LT test and it really wasn't something I was WANTING to try at this point.

Thanks.. will look at it and update some things and go from there...  Getting out and running is GREAT but early on being a non-insulin diabetic I learned an important thing on HR. For me and for a few others I have spoke to now. my HR will jump 15-20 BPM almost instantly if my sugar drops down too low. I mean an INSTANT jump. I will say I have not experianced this with the cooler temps and since Loosing the weight. But it is important to me to monitor.

Techdiver - 2011-01-10 3:58 PM First I was FAT 265 ish and 5'6" back in April of last year 2010.

I read your post, John's post, Kim's post and all the rest.  If you're not interested in the whole LT thing that's cool,  I think going out and running at a comfortable pace is what you want to shoot for--that might mean what you can comfortably do for an hour, it might be less.  Your initial goal should be getting your whole body (yes all 5'6" of  you--only I can get away with saying that) used to running.  It isn't just your aerobic system that needs to gradually be built, it's your muscles and joints too.  I started as a walk/runner an over the course of a year evolved to a straight runner.  I didn't worry about HR or pace.  I just liked to run.  Eventually I evolved into using a HRM and found the Maffetone book.  It helped me build a very strong aerobic system.  I wasn't super fast, but I had a ton of endurance.  The more I did it, the faster I got and so will you.  I know it's frustrating to see super fast cats in your area or even within our group, but it'll come to you too.

PS. The whole RPE thing will be a valuable tool.  It took me a while to figure out what Z1 or Z3 felt like.  Now it's second nature.  Trying to get that same feeling on the bike, but don't have it yet.

PPS I'm an old lady compared to you, but we share the same RHR.
