I know it is Chilly!!! I had to cover my legs with a blanket last night sitting outside reading.

Hey are you fairly close to Ft. Lauderdale?

I am 30 minutes or so north of Ft. Lauderdale. Actually running the Ft. Lauderdale HM in Feb.

Everybody must be sleeping in, since it is -15 wind chill this morning.  Ready to change to Florida.  Sick of Iowa cold really bad this year.

Speaking of trips to Florida, I am thinking of going to Daytona during Speed Week.  I don't want to go to the race.  I just want to see craziness, from the 16th floor.  The trip is free except for gas.  I am retired so I basically have the time.  I can drive down say on Monday (Feb 18), take my groceries with me, stay at our condo, then drive back before the race on Sunday (Feb 24) to avoid the traffic.  JWKMH does not understand and thinks this is a waste of time.  I have never hung around this kind of crowd.  I just think it might be fun to go to some bars, check out the peripheral events surrounding the race, see what the vibe is like.  I will also escape the winter weather a bit and do some outdoor riding.

Interesting, side note, Jimmie Johnson once stayed in one of our condos during the race.  He and Jeff Gordon were seen playing pool in the rec room. It created quite a stir amongst the blue-haired retirees from New York. You never know who might rent one of our units.

So here is the poll question.  Do you think the people watching would be worth the drive?  Would you do it given the time and the price of gas?

My poll got buried under the women in combat. Let's go to Florida.  Who's with me?  Maybe we can have women in the expeditionary force.

I am going in March to visit in-laws and possibly search for place to move to.

Sarasota!

They are near Lady Lake.  I don't know Florida at all, but I think that is near the middle of the state.  We were in Florida on vacation for spring break about 7 years to take my two daughters down.  Wife wants palm trees.  Visited Charleston, SC last spring and like it also, but we are thinking Florida.

So they're up in The Villages then, yes that is pretty much the middle of the state and about 40 min to an hour north of me.

I meant move to Sarasota I bet you would love it; lots of palm trees, right on the gulf, and about 1.5 hours to Disney.

Sounds like a plan, but only if I can buy you two.

Let me know the dates, I think my kids are off from school at the end of March (not sure about the dates - need to check), so we might be going away for a week, so hopefully is not the same days.

Ok no problem.  I will also be in Miami the first weekend of April, the 6th & 7th, to reff a regatta if that is close enough, or maybe we can meet half way somewhere.

Depends on what you want to do and what type of vacation you want.

Italy might be a good choice. You can spend a few days in Venice (1 night), Florence (2 nights), and Rome (2-3 nights); with the required 2-3 days in Tuscany hills visiting wineries.

Galapagos islands might be good too. Never been, but high on my lists of places to go.

Closer option, Costa Rica. Never been, but from what I have heard, you can probably do a combination of adventure (zip lining on the rain forest, surfing) and resort style relaxation.

Israel? Been there a couple of times (not for a long time).

It's hard to say "dream" vacation.  There are so many places I have yet to see before going back to some wonderful locations I have been already.

Right now, I have an urge to Northern UK and Scandinavia.  Maybe this summer?

My parents did something similar a few years ago.

They flew into Paris to catch the last stage of the Tour de France (2 nights), then took the train to Italy where they hopped around for another 8 or 10 days. They had some hotels booked in advance but not at every stop along the way. They hired a personal driver one of the days as it was cheaper to do that than take cabs/trains everywhere they wanted to go.

I would do something like that...

Private Island  on perfect weather days or a Europe trip.  My father has done multiple trips to Europe and I think that would be a great choice because of so many different places you could be rather quickly.  But, a private island without the crap of a million people would be great also.

Edited to add:

I guees I should have looked farther down the thread first.  Tony's information sways me more toward Europe.  I think the wife would love that trip.
