Oh boy...I'm back! I haven't done much checking on pod since Monday. You could say I'm a little nervous to attempt a "catch up".

Cali trip update: Brother ended up being a no show. His family got sick over the weekend. They were wanting to come at some point, but never made it. We had fun with my parents and my aunt and uncle. It was a little shocking to me that after 8 months my parents (mom especially) look like they've aged 5 years. My dad has MS and can't walk without the use of two canes. Most of the care for my grandma has fallen to my mom as my dad's mobility and strength have deteriorated. I feel pretty useless and helpless living in AZ. My "big" contribution???? My mom asked me to help her out, and I spent an afternoon sorting through boxes of cds and cassettes (my grandparents had no less than 15 Statler Brothers tapes!) Two full bags of tapes and one of cds...gone.

Our visit was a surprise for my grandma, and she really enjoyed seeing the kids. She interacted with them more than I thought she'd be able to and was more "with it" in our brief conversations than I imagined she would be. Even my mom mentioned it. When I left her on Thursday night, she asked if we were coming back in April. I confirmed that we would see her in a month, and she said, "You know I will try, but I can't promise I'll see you. I love you.  It was such a nice surprise that you brought the kids."  Cry  It was quite hard to walk away. So worth two days of driving.

amd723 - 2013-03-24 3:22 AM I had a great race this morning - even if it did pour on us. Did better than expected and managed to place 12 th out of 109 in my division.

CONGRATULATIONS ANN-MARIE!

Wow, those umpteen hands really do come in ... handy.

Where I'm from they call this a Tom joke.

Ooooh bike shopping! Very exciting.

So, out of curiosity what are you all looking for in a bike that your current bike doesn't give you?

Currently bike is a heavy-ish aluminum frame with low-end components and a triple in the front.  Triple drives me crazy, so I'd like a compact crank.  Nicer components, nicer frame.  Just time to upgrade.  Plus the bike is like 9 years old.

And you are looking for a road bike, not a tri bike, correct?

Yes, I am.  I test road the Cannondale Super Six, Cannondale Synapse, and Cannondale CAAD.

I LOVE the Cannondale Synapse!  It's aggressive enough for quick handling, but a little more laid back for long rides.  The SuperSix was really tight and uncomfortable (headset too far down).  Looking at the Synapse 3 (it's full carbon with Ultegra). Here's the regular and here's the women's.  I love the carbon and blue of the regular geometry.

Of course, it'll all be on hold until I actually sell bikes.  I'm also planning to ride bikes more tomorrow.

So if the regular one is just as comfortable to ride as the women's one then why wouldn't you get that one (I agree it looks much nicer).

If the regular is as comfortable, I am definitely getting that one.  I rode the women's one as they don't currently have the regular one in stock in my size.  They will be getting one soon, so I can try that.  I think it's just a question of geometry.

My road bike, Tin Canny, is a WSD Cannondale Synapse. Geometry isn't that different to the men's/standard from what I can tell by looking at the numbers.

It is an AWESOME bike. Great ride. Small investment for top-end riding quality

I LOVE it.  Rode some Specialized today that weren't as awesome.  Taking stuff in to sell tomorrow!!!

Hot damn. Record winds in Melbourne--not as cold as last year but pretty close. Swim got chopped to one-loop, HIM distance because of conditions.

Jo did the swim in 44min! Good girl!

Holy schnitt. Shortened IM course means I'm still in the running to become Indonesia's first Ironman. I think technically it would be a co-holding because of exigent circumstances, but still. Very exciting.

No shyte, right? All signs pointed to NAY!!!

We're doing okay here, most importantly Mutti of course. Quiet Sunday. I would have gone to church with her but totally unable to wake up! We were both up really late, couldn't sleep. Finally got the 1000 or so funeral pics sorted down to 120 and edited.

Tina left last night so it's kind of lonely. She was very anxious about leaving, just for herself. She didn't want to go. It's a huge house with more than enough space when it was the four of us and currently 12 rotating staff--it's downright immense and echo-ey with just two of us in the main house now.

My brother might come by with some of his kidlets (all adults in 20s!) to see if any of Pa's giant wardrobe they'd like to have. Seriously, my dad had a massive walk-in closet bigger than my bedroom in Bali full of both tailored and top-shelf clothes.

I took his running shorts they're brand new, of course, tags and all. WTF would my dad ever have worn a pair of those for? He had 'em just to have 'em.

Great event yesterday. Over 600 cyclist. I decided yesterday morning that with Galveston approaching and my IT Band history that I would ride the majority of the ride at a easy/moderate pace with 3-4 15 minute intervals at Galveston pace. That turned out very well. Great ride and lots of fun! Finished the 53 in around 3:20 which wasn't too bad for an easy pace. I do really need to focus on hydration intake. I only drank 30 ounces of water. I set my watch to remind me to drink every 15 minutes and still didn't take enough water. Maybe I need to change it to every 10 minutes. I think my nutrition is dialed in. I just find it very difficult to drink in aero for some reason. I actually get out of breath when I drink in aero. Thoughts??

Congratulations Jonathan!

Great ride, way to get in the miles and sort some stuff out.

Not sure about aero. What's your entire hydration setup? Do you have a downtube bottle as well? A lot of people slow down when they take the bottle out of the cage, drink, put back in. Kind of like a break. You may not get that "break" if drinking in aero.

Do you have to change any part of your position at all except maybe tilting your head down a little to drink?

Asalzwed - 2013-03-23 10:32 AM I second what Yanti said about stretching. I never do static stretching before a run. Rarely afterwards. Often I do a little dynamic stretching beforehand but the priority is the jogging and strides.

I can't imagine not stretching (static)...before I run.  I'm usually still sore from the day before...so I need to.    I was do the same stretches after also.  Just feels good on the legs.

Guess what?   I did my normal stretching yesterday...did an easy 6 tenths of a mile jog with a little bit of what might be considered a stride... stopped, stretched a bit more and THEN started my workout!  I think that might be called a warm up.

Asalzwed - 2013-03-24 12:44 AM So, I guess my trouble is knowing when a new bike is needed. I think my bike is awesome but then again I thought my 1990s steel frame hardrock was awesome too. It wasn't.

Downtube shifters?

No. But I get a distinct impression from another group that's it's not smart training to neglect bike upgrades. I mean you have a tri bike and aero helmet. What made you decide that?

The tri bike cost $490 and the current helmet was taking considerable chunks of skin with it. Aero lid was warmest replacement (was thinking of NZ).

A bike that's comfortable and that you like riding pretty much trumps everything else. It's not like you think you're going to do long course anytime soon, and you're doing great with short course, so shorty aerobars and if you can get a good deal on an aero helmet, great. That'll buy you a minute or two in an Olympic. You could rent a disc cover for the back wheel, but really not necessary.

My first season I used a 20 year old alum road bike with shifters on the down tube. The next season I bought a new Felt some alum some carbon road bike and last season - because of the great Cervelo Share the Road deal- I bought my tri bike. However, I don't have an aero helmet. They make me laugh and I would be self conscious using one. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Chrissy Wellington used a regular helmet at Kona, so if she doesn't ( didn't) need one, neither do I. I'm pretty sure I'm just a touch off her abilities, so I get to follow her lead

I'm still riding with the original Mountain Bike helmet I was given with my tri bike (the bike shop owner was out of better helmets LOL)  I'm sure a couple enthusiasts might notice, but I don't care.    Someday, I may buy another helmet, and if my IM times this year warrant an aero helmet, I will spring for one.  I don't think it looks very cool to wear an aero helmet @ 12 mph.

Heading up to Seattle (1 hour drive) to do an easy 50 mile ride.  25 miles out - stop eat lunch, 25 miles back.  Riding with 3 people I've never met (one is a cute, and I think, single lady, which is half the reason I'm going.. hahaha).

Single lady aside, I'm looking forward to this.  I haven't really ridden with any group in 20 years... Did all my rides solo last year, so this is going to be fun.

Gotta go shave and shower now......

Glad you had such a successful ride. I really have no clue as to why you get out of breath drinking in aero. Are you holding yourself in some weird position, eg, lifting out of the saddle or somehow squishing your diaphragm?
