Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by kenj Originally posted by Meulen Nice job Devinci and DJ. Those are some solid training numbers! DJ, my HR is always a little higher outside. I just get excited to ride outside and the adrenaline flows. It's even higher when I trail ride, almost 10bpm on avg. HR is just inconsistent. Inside, it takes me forever to warm up and it's difficult to get it up to my higher ranges. Had an interesting weekend here. I got in what I could since the dog and her treatments are taking up most of my time during the week. I went on my normal LTF ride Saturday and met a Scott bike rep. WOW...did he bring some sweet bikes out! Then it just so happened we were both planning on getting out on the trails Sunday. So he met me at the local trails and broughs some of the top of line MTB's out there. Man....was I smitten with these bikes! LOL Had a good ride in the trails. I did go over the bars once and ended up bruising my shoulder up. But nothing bad. The worst part was getting stung by a mud wasp. Darn thing hit me right in the bottom lip while I was hitting the single track!! That thing hurt like !@#$!!!!!!!!! Introduced my cousin, who's been a good training partner with me, to MTB'ing. I got him into tri's last season and he's been out with me on the road a lot. I'm not sure he got over the nervousness of being on the dirt. I hope he had fun, but I think it may take a day to think about it since he was so nervous the whole time. Got another busy week ahead. Taking the dog for treatments. Going to try and look at a new car tuesday night if the one I want is still available. Hopefully, that works out. Haven't had anything but a boring SUV for a while. I didn't think the 14 vettes were available yet. LOL! No vette this time. My wife didn't like it as much as I did. She had a gard time with long front end and was afraid to drive it. So I went on the hunt for something we could both agree was cool and loved to drive. I went back to 2003 when the 350z came out from Nissan. We test drove it, both of us loved it, and then some things happened and we couldn't afford it. So we never bought it. Fast forward to today. Nissan is on the 370z. Still the same style and ride but an even more cool rhetro design. I'm trying to work a deal on a 40th anniversary edition. Keeping my fingers crossed it works out! |

Member 213 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Brian, nice Nissan. My wife and I have had several Nissan vehicles over the years although nothing as cool as a "z" and they've all been great cars. I drive an old beat up 2000 Xterra and my wife drives a 2012 Juke now. |

Veteran 458 Greensburg, PA | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I had another nutrition question. When you say that you have an "alternative" nutrition plan, what exactly do you mean? I have my plan, which I have been practicing and has been working. I always have a few extra gels, blocks, etc. I was planning on some fig newtons in bike special needs (glad to hear others enjoy the fig newtons too!), along with my nutrition for the second half of the bike. When you say an alternative plan, do you mean carrying something totally different, or being willing to modify what you are currently doing, if things aren't going well? I don't even know where I would start trying to come up with something totally different? Or am I just being dense?? |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hi All! In full-on taper mode right now, but still completely exhausted...is that normal? :-) Karen, my take on alternate nutrition is have a plan but be ready to be flexible--for instance, I have no idea how my stomach is going to react to running more than 7 miles off a long bike, since I've never gone farther than that (for a brick). I'm figuring at some point during the marathon my stomach will not cooperate with my "plan" and I'll just have to take in whatever will work. Struggling with not overeating during taper...and though I'm thankful for the shorter sessions, it's making me a little nervous because of course it seems like I'm not doing enough! Speaking of doing enough, here's the link to this week's blog, all about the "plan." Oh, and jealous of the Z! Very nice...I just got the oil changed, brakes done and new tires put on my 2007 Outlander, which will be hauling my bike and triathlon crap from Florida to Louisville next week. Now I just have to clean her and she'll be ready to roll. http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-plan.html |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed OK I'm off in the morning -- 6.5 hours in the car with my little monsters Downloaded a couple movies and some Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles - i think we can make it. Just so looking forward to getting there and soaking it all in. People keep asking if I'm nervous - not really - a little stressed this week with packing for both the race (and everything that I could possible need in any weather conditions) and packing for 4 people going on vacation. I'll be back a week from Friday (4 days in Vermont after the race) Good luck Becky at IMLOU!! |

You don't need to carry anything extra, but maybe have the figs or a different gel mix in your special needs bag. Or take in some of the out of the ordinary stuff offered on the course, like orange slices or coke on the run. The biggest take away is to be flexible. If your plan is not working, don't be so rigid to it that it has a negative impact on your race. An extremely warm or cold day can create a situation where a change is necessary. Same with drinking a bit too much water on the swim in salt water. Don't get too uptight about it all though Karen! You are doing great! |

The taper is notorious for creating self doubt, don't let it! You are well trained and now just putting some freshness back into your muscles! I look forward to reading the blog Becky! |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Nice car Brian! Sorry to hear about your dog. We have a husky that turns 14 in a week. His back legs are not doing well despite medication. Getting worried it might be close to the end if the line for I'm. GOOD LUCK MAGGIE!!! First for the drive with your kids & then for the race. Good luck to you to Ken!! I know it's not your A race, but jeez, it is an Ironman! Becky, taper time is crazy time for me! Trust your training! You've been doing GREAT, so I know you'll have a great race! Getting a bit fit this evening, probably should have done it sooner, but I'm a terrible procrastinator. After two new saddles in two weeks, both of which resulted in pain worse than I've known, I need to find some solutions! |

After two new saddles in two weeks, both of which resulted in pain worse than I've known, I need to find some solutions! When I bought the new Adamo Saddle, it was uncomfortable, I looked on the web site and it gave you some break in information and said it would take some time to get used it. After a few weeks, the discomfort was gone and I have had no issues. Some saddle shift the pressure to different areas which take time to get used to. Hope you find the right fit. It did take me two different saddle before I found the right one. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I talked to the wife about Chattanooga last night, it might be an option for 2014 instead of going back to FL which was my original plan. Still have some time to decide. One of the factors is the earlier date which would make it nice that the season would be over a month earlier since they moved FL70.3 and I am leaning towards that race as well. Anyone else looking at that race? |
