Steve, did you read on BT about the guys riding in the mountains in Colorado that came around the corner coming down a hill at about 40mph  (riding on the road - not trails) and hit a bear?  The bear stood up on its hind legs, but then changed its mind and walked off into the woods.  The guy then tried to bend his bike back into shape and rode himself to the hospital.  Now that is a HTFU story!

You should have been running with your bear bells on.  I remember everytime we went hiking in Glacier National Park and in Yellowstone the rangers urged people to wear their "bear bells."  But  I also remember how annoying they got during a hike, that must go double for a run!

I volunteered at a HIM yesterday.  I was the watergirl as the athletes were exiting T2 and heading out for the run.  It was great to see everyone and  I really learned a lot about racing that distance from watching the race.  People had coolers in transition to keep their hydration belts cold for the run - very smart.  And  I can't tell you how many people came running out of T2 with bananas shoved down their pants!  It was very hard to bite my tongue at that, but  I was a good girl.  I editted my comments to, "Water, water on the table, water for the road, it's hot out there, take a cup to cool off with"  I saw so many people cramping up very bad as they were coming down the home stretch.  The temp was in the mid to high 90's ,very hot for mid September.  And there was some SERIOUS bike porn in that race!  Very cool!

Nice job on the water there Tracy and I'm a little disappointed that you behaved yourself.  I'm sure those athletes could have used a little humor to take thier mind off things.

Re: bears - lets see if this will upload properly.  If there isn't a pic, it's because I'm a little slow.

Yo, take it easy.  That's a lot of exclamation points for someone that just had surgery on their vocal chords.

Heal up quick!!!

Hope you heal quickly. Drugs are always good for pain
You should be out doing the swim bike and run by Friday probably ha ha. I'll bet that is a little more uncomfrtable than a zit.

Do you get to eat lots of ice cream?  I am looking forward to a nice long week of decoding your drug-induced cryptic blog postings.  Take care, get lots of rest, and heal fast.  Glad to hear the surgery went so well.

Anyone have a computrainer or TacX trainer?

it's going to get cold here soon and I hate getting on the trainer.  I can run and swim all winter but tough to get out there in the cold and ride.

This will be my first winter since starting tri's, but last winter I did a combination of spin class and mountain biking and it worked out pretty well for me.  Some people don't think spin class is a very good substitute, but for me it makes sure I push it and get a good workout.  And since the alternative is couch time (no trainer here), it seems like a pretty good option.

My wife and I both have a Computrainer.  There is a ton of benefit from them... They will improve your cycling tremdously!!!!!

As far as a week as a week of trying to understanding what I am typing... I won't be taking pain pills.  I can't stand them!  I hate not being able to go "Number 2" and pain pills stop me up!  I will just and moan for a while....

Actually I feel pretty dang good.  I slept terrible, but I feel ok.  No talking for a week, and I rolled over to wife this morning to say good morning!  Oops!  The good news is my voice sounded normal.

The one wierd thing is that my tongue is super numb!!!!! The right side of the tongue is really funky!  Hopefully it passes!

I'm not able to afford one of those Computrainers either. I am going to take some different classes at the rec centre I belong to. There are some very interesting ones available like the one for core strengthening, looks tough. I think that anything that will improve my core strength will be very good for my future in triathlons.

If you have a regular trainer check with your LBS.  Mine offers spin classes and you provide your own trainer and bike, they give the class.  It is another option and a nice way to ride the trainer without getting too bored.

What is a computrainer anyway?  Is it a computer simulator program for riding your trainer? And yes I am being too lazy to Google it for myself. (got to save all the energy I can this week - tapering you know )

Computrainer is a trainer that is connected to a computer.  It has some nice features like a spin scan that can tell you where your dead spots are, measures power, etc.  You can ride courses or make your own, and the resistance changes when you go up or down hills.  You can ride against other people on the courses or against the computer. basically turns your trainer into a video game to keep you entertained while you ride.

Tacx makes something called Foritus or I-Magic which is significantly cheaper, computrainer  = 1500 bucks, Tacx 700 - 1000 depending on which version.

I can take about 30 minutes on the trainer, computrainer/TacX/Whatever should make it more entertaining to keep you occupied while you ride.

TacX also has a steerer option, I think it works by taking your front tire off and putting your fork on the steerer and it will turn on the screen.

That sounds very cool.  I would have to save up for that toy but sounds like it would be worth the money.  Maybe I could cancel my gym membership - I never go there anyway.........

Oh and just swam my first 2k length swim at the pool today (i.e. no drills just straight swimming).  Felt pretty good.  I think I am going to just work on the distances for awhile then get back to working on getting faster.

AWESOME!  I got in the pool yesterday and could tell I've been neglecting a certain discipline, and it wasn't cycling (though that may be true too!)

HAHA yeah, I went OWS last week and probably did about 1300M and was pretty tired at the end.  So need to work on the distance, my Olympic in November is only 1000M but want to be ready for those 1500M ones for next year.

Your wife must be loving that you can't talk. She can get the last word in all week, and the first word... etc.. She can talk to you about anything she wants and you can't change the topic or complain.

I am swim focused this week, so like 9 miles of OWS or whatever. I just hate getting up before 5am to get to the lake and in the water before 6am to get to work by 8am. And at 35 F (air temp) its not so inviting and dark, kind of find the lake by when your feet get wet. You kind of have to push the cows out of the way to get to the boat launch and then after 75 yards of weeds in 60 F water you are free and clear until the sun comes up. The sun just above the treeline has been a great motivator to work on breathing on my left side. I still suck at it, but am starting to do better with it.

On Monday I was doing 5 strokes right side, 3 stroke shift, 5 strokes left, rinse repeat. I really need to figure out how to do the 3 stroke breath thing, but I end up short on air after not so many breaths.

The 2 hours swim on Sunday should totaly drain me.

First HIM in less than a month, I should be freeking out, but I think I'll procrastinate on that a bit longer.

I am trying to focus on the excited aspect and not the nervous.  I am guessing 40 minutes for the swim, 1:30 for the bike, and a good hour for the run - but to be honest, I will be happy just to cross the finish line on this one.  I am trying to be positive that the cold weather will be good for my performance - just different considering it has been in the 90's all week here.  Patience will be my motto for this.  Taking it one piece at a time.  I've never said this before, but I will be glad when I'm off the bike.  I keep having visions of mechanical problems, monster hills, frozen ears - kind of like Dumb and Dumber riding the scooter in the mountains.  Hey, there's a thought, I'LL PEE ON THE BIKE!!!!
