going nuts thinking about the gear for the race. what are peoples thoughts about running with a fuel belt. I use one all the time on long runs and was thinking i would just use my carbopro for the run too because i havene't practiced with gels. It seems dumb though because of all the aid stations

Hey!

I started a blog.  Well, actually, I created my blog site yesterday.  I have exactly 1 post.  Not much else.  I WILL update more, though.

I'd love to have you read it and follow my crazy journey.  (that's if I can figure out what the heck to write about) :-)

The url is:  http://joelpstrickland.blogspot.com/

Thanks.  Any feedback would be appreciated!!!

Its a great Idea if thats what you practice with!!  If your not used to gels they can upset your stomach pretty quick and some of them taste like crap.

Agreed, now is not the time to change your nutrition. I have one that I will run with that has sports drink that works on my stomach. I hate GE, so I will grab water at the aid stations and just have my own on me. It's how I train, so I'm used to it.

I am using my belt also. I don't like Power Bar gels and thats all they use. I began using GE a little over 3 weeks ago to get used to drinking it on the route. The transition has been fine with no stomach issues. I always used unflavored Heed, with Crystal Light (whatever flavor I want) for training. But I also like to use the Cliff blocks on the run and I know they won't have those, so I will have my own stash.

Some interesting numbers from looking at the participant list for IMFL:

  • There are 2866 folks registered
  • The biggest group is my age-group.  M40-44.  471 participants.  (my chance of getting a Kona spot?  0%)
  • 2154 guys registered, 663 women
  • 21 Physically challenged folks.  These people are AMAZING!
  • 28 male pros.  19 female pros.  Some notable names?  Nina Kraft, Katya Meyers.  A bunch of guys I’ve never heard of.  None of the ”big name” guys, as they all just raced in Kona
  • Racers come from 42 countries.  After the USA, Canada leads the pack with 171 entries. Germany is 3rd with 79 participants.  Great Britain has 55.  10 separate countries have 1 entrant each.
  • 516 racers come from Florida.  Miami and Tallahassee are each sending 34 racers, followed by Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Boca Raton & Gainesville (tied for 5th).  18 local Panama City & Panama City Beach folks will be racing.
  • Texas, Virginia, Georgia, California and North Carolina round out the top 5 states.

That was really cool.  Thanks.  I had no idea there was such a discrepancy between men and women.

Last year, my orthopedic dr raced Kona and 2 wks later turned around and did IMFL. His times for both were pretty consistent. Like 10:50, he is a monster.

more pivot table madness (gotta love Excel and the ability to multitask during conference calls)

Most common first names:

Female:  Lisa (15), Jennifer (14), Kelly (10), Michelle (11), Amy (10)
Male:  Michael (77), David (63), John (57), Scott (41), Kevin (39)

Most common occupations:

# 1, by a landslide:  (blank).  With 1281.  Maybe there are that many of us who do nothing but train!  :-)

Engineer 67, Sales (47), Physician (45), Attorney (40)...seems like validation that this is a "rich person's" sport.  Until you see the next 2 on the list:  Teacher (37) and Student (33).

There are at least 9 "homemaker's".  There are 10 chiropractors, 17 physical therapists, 12 nurses, 4 massage therapists, and several pastors/priests who will be able to help us out if we become too beleagured.  There's also a funeral director - should we need his services.

We also have these "unique" professions represented:  Barnacle Harvester, Bean Counter, Beer Wench, Big Cheese, Big Wave Surfer, Can Collector, Cat Herder, Chicken Hypnotiser, Cookie Dough Salesman, Cow Puncher, Daydreamer, Dreamer, Early Retiree, Exotic Dancer, Eye Candy, Figurehead, Former Fat Man, Geek. Gigalo, Goat Herder, Goat Rodeo Clown, Head Sushi Sampler, Half-brain Triathlete, Ironman addict, Kona Participant Wannabe, Lion Tamer, Macarrena Instructor, Octopus trainer, Party Animal, Queen B, Sex Symbol, She Ra, Speed Demon, Stimulus Bill Recipient Wannabe, Underwear model, Village Idiot, and Zamboni Driver.

Since more men than women race, most events will extensively break down the age categories for males. In 2008, when I did my first HIM, I was waiting for my age group to be called at the swim...I am 47. Instead of calling out "ladies 45 to 49". They said, "...and now for all ladies 45 and up!" There were 2 chicks there over 70! The 'vette might have made me feel better that day.

So you include the goat rodeo clown but not the Firefighter/Paramedic. Fine, I see where I rank

I am loving these posts! Very neat information about the participants. I am from VA so i am in one of the top five states...Yah!

I am so looking forward to this weekend.
Saturday full tune up on bike. I am riding 60 miles on Sunday....which will feel like a walk in the park, with full race gear...wheels helmet...and race day clothes.

Well I got the call from the Volunteer Captain.  Myself along with four others will be doing body marking.  Hopefully since we got that detail we will be able to watch the start.  I am pumped about signing up for IMFL 2010.  I will try and keep a steady hand while I am marking you guys.Laughing  Hope to meet a few people while I am there.

For me the fuel belt is a love/hate relationship.  I train with a fuel belt, but won't be racing with it.  I've trained with the same nutrition that will be available on the course, so my stomach should be happy.  And I won't have to carry the annoying belt around...yippie!!

I's still deciding on fuel belt.  I have trained using it since there are NO aid stations setup every mile around my neighborhood.   At least if I have it and start walking, I'll have the ability to drink..

Same plan here. Although I did not have access to some of the gel flavors they will have on the course. I am curious to try some at the expo to see if they are any good. So far the two I can stomach are strawberry/bananna and vanilla. Hate the chocolate and tangerine!!!
