Kath2163 - 2010-05-10 11:51 PM

So I need to ask a question about cassettes (sorry, I know we have been down this road before).  I am probably going to purchase another cassette that gives me another climbing gear. I currently have 11-25 on both my road and tri bike. While searching the internet (does anyone have a recommendation where to buy a cassette on line?) I discovered that there are more combinations then I thought. I see that there are 11-28 and 12-27.  One store had 10 speed ultegra cassettes with  combinations  from 11-23 to 11-28 and then 12-23 and 12-25 (no 12-27).  I have 105's on my road bike and am perfectly fine with a 105 cassette. Do certain models have different ratios? I assumed that the different cassettes (105, Ultegra, etc) had all the same gear offerings but now I am thinking that isn't the case (or stores don't carry all the options).  Would an 11-28 and/or a 12-27 work with a compact crank and if so is there a reason to get one over the other? (If I understand this at all it would seem that the 11-28 would provide a wider range of gear options).
Thanks for the help!

I ordered mine (I settled on the 13-26 w/ compact up front) from XXcycle.com. If you're not in a rush the are almost half the cost you can get elsewhere. My Campy was 55 bucks including shipping. Only thing is they ship from France so you have to wait a week or two. They have great prices on tires too.

Fred, hope your feeling better soon.

I do have a good excuse to blow off training tonight.  Bad weather again, 40's with heavy rain.  However the real reason is a local Tri store is hosting a discussion with Lisa Bentley, an 11 time Ironman finisher who also suffers from cystic fibrosis.  Should be an interesting event.  I guess whenever I feel like life is telling me that IM training is not doable, you meet or hear about someone like this who has obviously overcome quite a bit to finish 11 IMs.  Kind of brings it all back into perspective.

Fred: Ho[pe you feel better.
I myself am now sidelined for a little bit. As i wzs doing my long run last night at mile 6 i just totally lost it. Pace declined, body just began to hurt (groin and shins). Unfort i was 6 miles from home...so i had to do the death march/run back. Today i am feeling it. Pain in my groin this morning. Frustrated at myself...
Side note: I just registered for Oceanside 70.3 for 2011. SO FAR AWAY...but i am excited

I hope you get feeling better soon!

How long does Oceanside usually stay open?  I was just through there an hour or so ago and was thinking if I am going to be here I should do that race.

My company has an office in Temecula that I spend a lot (and looks like even more after our current project) of time at.  I was in Irvine for a meeting and took the long way back.

I'm tempted to sign up for Oceanside too since San Diego is my hometown and I would LOOVE to race there. But I want to wait and see how Vineman goes first before I commit to another HIM. I'm hoping it is still open in late July and I can decide then if it makes sense to sign up.

I didn't realize that she actually won 11 IMs and has completed 33 total.   I think she mentioned that she won IM Canada 4-5 times, IM Australia 4 times, IM NZ, and a 3rd at Kona.  Truly amazing considering the impact her condition would have on an endurance athlete.

She was really humble and down to earth, great to meet her.

I started running with a new tri club the next town over.   I'll probably join up and start training with them more.  I did find it interesting that after telling one of them I dnf'ed at IMSG they said, 'Ohhh... I know who you are now.'  Still it is a good group, good people, experienced triathletes (I think I was the only triathlete there not to qualify for Kona) and well organized.

Lately I feel like I can train without worrying about reinjuring something, and its the first time I've felt that way in almost a year;  it feels pretty damn good.

Speaking of Kona, my friend's wife KQ'ed at Wildflower, taking 3rd in the female 50-54 division.  I didn't even know you could KQ at Wildflower!

I'm really tempted too.  What's holding me back are race fees; not that I'm broke, but I already have a few hundered dollars in races fee obligations the rest of the year (I don't sign up until the last possible).

Fred, hope you feel better soon.  I've found that sometime getting sick is exactly the forced recovery I need.  Obviously I don't TRY to make myself sick, but when I do I often come back stronger than I was because of the complete recovery I give myself.

Kathleen... Obviously I have the same weather as you.  This snow business has got to go.  Just when we think we are getting warmer weather we get the junk we have now.  But it's supposed to be back high 60s on Sunday and to the mid 70s by Monday.   If you every want, I meet up with a group of cyclists at Parfet Park in Golden on Mondays and Thursdays to do a quick after work ride up Lookout Mountain.  Sometimes I go for a quick 2 mile run after just to give myself a brick workout.  You should come sometimes if you can, we leave the parking lot at 6pm.

So what does everyone have lined up for the weekend training wise?

We're at 3:45 in ride times for the our long ride. Then rest week next week, and then we start building in time. I have a feeling this next month or so is when I start to see how well my body really is going to handle the training load.

I didn't even really care about rest weeks before, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to next week.

Easy 9 mile trail run (relatively flat) on Friday after work.  Saturday will probably be an easy 5 miles of running and perhaps an easy 20-30 mile bike ride if weather permits (otherwise I'll go swimming).  Sunday is a 5.3mile leg of a marathon relay (the race starts at 6am Yell ... basically a speed workout, then at 1:30pm after brunch with the relay teams I know I'm leading a 50mile 17-18mph average speed (relatively flat) bike ride with my cycling group.

I completely agree with you about looking forward to my rest and taper weeks.  After 3-4 weeks of progressively harder training days/weeks, it's always a well deserved break to take it easy for a week and cut back on the volume and intensity of workouts.  I love how I start feeling more and more fatigued over the weeks during workouts, but my speeds and paces remain the same for 3-4 weeks... Then you hit your rest/recovery phase and the following week you come back with a big gain in your fitness level over where you were all last month.
Plus, laundry and house cleaning actually gets done during this time period.

I feel for you guys, it was rainy this year in SoCal and we had a 5 week string were every weekend rained, that stunk and it was only rain! After my front wheel sliding out and going down I don't ride in the rain.  I can't imagine snow, and this late in the year...

With all these weather anomalies I think we have hit a critical desalinization point, we may be on the verge of a major climate shift.

...okay, I watch too much movies.

Technically, around here, it's not really an anomaly.  Colorado is infamous with drastic weather fluctuations from day to day... even hour to hour.  We often say: "If you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes".  It may be exaggerating with the 5 minute thing, but even the weather guys on TV and the radio joke with things like "... and over the next 3 days we should be gaining another 40 degrees, reaching about 80 by the weekend... but we'll leave the 'chance of showers' there everyday because after all it is Colorado and we really don't know what might happen"

Learn from my mistakes... DON'T let that feeling have too loud of a voice and go out and start training too hard.  Stick to the [hopefully conservative] plan, and allow that good feeling to let you train consistently.  It would be all to easy to start killing it because you feel great and then be right back in a place where you are walking the line between training stress/recovery and injury.

Even in IM training, I think you should usually feel the way you are feeling right now.  Maybe after a super long bike ride or mediumish-long run (which is as long as I plan to run during IM training) it might be okay to be a bit sore/fatigued for a day or two afterwards... but I think day after day you should generally feel like you could do again what you just finished doing.

Just my two cents.

PennState - 2010-05-13 8:16 AM Ok, slightly better. Was able to get an easy run in this am. I work most of this weekend, so training will be iffy. I don't look forward to my rest weeks, but I know I need them to recover. Can't have build weeks without rest weeks

Glad to hear you are on the mend!  Be carefull!

Got in a longish swim this morning and tonight I'm checking out my coach's computrainer class that he offers Tuesday and Thursday nights. Should be a good bike workout. The classes are pretty expensive but I've heard really good things so I decided to give it a try since I need a LOT of work on my biking. I'm thinking if it seems worthwhile I might cough up the $$ to go once or twice a month for really focused bike sessions.

I'm trying to squeeze as much training as I can in today before we leave for NY tomorrow. I'm missing a 45 mile bike on Saturday because of the trip, but I'm hoping to still squeeze in Sunday's 7 mile run before the graduation festivities start on Sunday.

Yesterday I worked a little late and had to do some shopping and drop my computer off at the Apple store to get fixed. By the time I got home, ate dinner and spent some time with the wife it was almost 11pm and I hadn't done any exercise. I guess that will be my rest day this week. I did get a lot done so I guess it wasn't a waste.

Tonight I'm planning on my last run before Tempe Int'l this Sunday. We actually have to go set up transition on Saturday because of the high numbers of entrants (1500). I'll probably swim on Friday and don't know about Saturday yet.
