stephsprint - 2011-01-29 4:49 PM Well I did my Tropical 5k today. I did a lot of coughing and got a stitch but I did it and it was OK. Before I got sick I was hoping I'd do 35/36, my previous best was 40:56. I broke 40, so I'm OK with that. There were over 2000 people in this 5k! My first mile was 15 minutes! there were SO MANY people. It was beautiful...we basically started in the bay, ran past the cruise ships, and headed for South Pointe Park on South Beach. Gorgeous way to start the day!

I was fit for my new bike. I''m getting a Trek 3.1 WSD. I will order it on Monday or Tuesday. I also got some new bike shoes and pedals for my spin bike. I'm taking it BACK from my husband! If he wants to ride, he'll have to clip in!

My husband runs the ING Miami Marathon tomorrow. Mile 14 is right here at our building. I'll be ready with supplies and a BIG HOT PINK SIGN! It's a great event and it's bigger than ever this year...I find myself incredibly moved and inspired by marathoners. I hope to be one by next year. It was 48 at 7 this morning, and it's supposed to be cool tomorrow too. I think we are 71 degrees now at 4:45. Good running weather. I'm swimming tomorrow morning...I got rolfed today and I feel very nice and loose.

Gmer and Ree... good job on the weight loss! and the running and swimming! Sorry about your spouses hours getting cut my friend Soccer...that's awful. I had one of THOSE weeks this week... grrr. but I am happy to be gainfully employed.

Congratulations on your race and good luck to your husband tomorrow. I'm sure he will appreciate your support during the run.

" I think we are 71 degrees now at 4:45."
You are so lucky! (I know I'm a complainer since I'm not near as cold as some of us, but I really don't like winter weather)

He really did! I took videos and photos of his group at miles 14, 20, & 24. I also had electrolytes for him, fresh headbands, and clean towels. Hey, he deserves it... he worked really hard for 4+ months! I'm next... but I'm going to get my first two half marathons under my belt first.

Steph, I love your attitude! I'm nervous about my first 1/2 mary coming up cant imagine right now ever doing a full distance marathon. So much of athletics is psychological and you have a really inspiring positive can do attitude.

Ok, I'm going to try really hard not to come off sounding like a paranoid woman, but I'm a little concerned about my thighs! I am petite, but I am a petite pear carrying most of my weight in my booty and quads.  After a solid month of trainer riding my pants, while getting looser in the waist, seem to be a getting a bit tighter in the thighs.  This is freaking me out a bit.  I know my legs are becoming stronger and tighter, but getting bigger?  Not so happy about that.  Will they eventually lean out with continued riding or am I going to end up with Popeye sized thighs?  Somebody calm me down!

The most beautiful legs I've ever seen have been on the legs of female triathletes.  I can't remember what distance you are training for but if you primarily concerned about weight loss remember...its all about keeping the aerobic burn high and the strength burn low. Meaning in strength training, low weight, hi repetitions.  In spinning, higher reps and less really pushing through the gears at hard slow sleeps.  You'll need to do that to climb better, certainly.  But to lose weight, spin faster at lighter work loads. It's all good.  At least that's what I was told and I have lovely legs.  All shaved and everything

I think you should post pics, you know...so we can really know how to answer...

Like Scott says, high-cadence.

Meaningless without pics!  Ha!

So I should spend more time high cadence and less time pushing bigger gears--which makes perfect sense.  I do need those bigger gear workouts though, for climbing purposes once in a while though, right?  I'm training for a HIM so I have lots of riding ahead of me for the next 4 months.

In addition to the high cadence as recommended already, remember, we can't dictate where on our body we lose weight.  I've found that fact to be most unfortunate.  Ultimately, assuming a calorie deficit, the weight will come off leaving you with even nicer legs!

20" forecasted for here... I have already allocated Wed as a "Close the shop day" and get in my big 4x4 - drive north to the ski slopes, and snowboard until I cannot feel my fingers!

I've found that even with a calorie deficit and loosing weight, there are places that women store fat and its almost impossible to change that. For some women its the hips and butt for some its the back of the arms, for some (like me) its the stomach  (I have small hips so my fat storage sits on my stomach, like a little beer belly which is amazing because I dont even drink beer!) its just the way we're built.
I'll loose weight everywhere else before my so called "problem area". This has been frustrating and I've spent too much time fretting over my pouch, but in the last few years I've gotten over the worry about body image in large part due to Tri training. As I've gotten in shape, I've realized how it feels to be healthy and fit and I have become more comfortable in my body, despite what shape it is. Another big factor is just getting older, I'm 46, I guess I've given up my quest for that illusive "ideal" body. As Popeye said, "I yam what I yam".
I dont mean to freak you out or imply that you wont lose weight in your thighs, you got some great advice on how to train so to not bulk up with muscle, just relaying my experience with this stuff...

x2 on storing fat in the stomach area. It can be frustrating when you lose fat in areas that you don't consider problem areas (for me the legs) and not lose it where you want to. Oh well, I feel really good about my progress and will keep at it!

At the end of each month I like to go back over my logs and see where I am at for the month.  I am happy to say that this month was the highest run volume since I started training (53.76 miles) and my second highest bike volume (113 miles) and all of that was on a trainer! My swim really suffered, but since it is my strongest sport I have been replacing the pool for my skis.

How did everyone else do - any milestones, improvements, things you need to work on????

Thanks for doing this (I was going to ask the same thing tomorrow).

I had a pretty good month, almost 30 hours of tri-specific training including a lot of swim time.  Got back on the bike after neglecting it a lot last year.  February will be a lot more of the same and then Ironman training starts in March.

40 miles of running this month and that's with starting swim lessons too so very happy about that.

So, I walk into the YMCA to get my swim on tonight when one of the employees tell me as soon as I walk in. ...

" I just wanted to let you know, that I don't think that I'll be able to make it to Spinning Class on Thursday. I'm having dinner with a girlfriend of mine, and I don't think I'll make it back in time. "

My response ... " Ok, you only get one miss.  Thursday will count as your miss, so I hope that Valentines Day doesn't fall on a Tuesday, or Thursday. "

Her response ... " I can bring my boyfriend .. then she says,  "Ok, I'll try to make it back for the class. "   I said, .... "Ok", .... Then I walk away...

Funny!!

(Nobody's mistaken me for a spin instructor, but then I don't get inside for anything besides the pool)

Happy February McFuzzies!!!

A whole new month to train, learn, and get strong.  Of course here in the Midwest it's starting off with a bang of a blizzard.  (If the Groundhog get's snowed in and can't see his shadow, does that mean spring is just around the corner???)  Schools are already closed here and stores out of milk.

Hope everyone has a great day, gets home safe, and is able to get the training done they need today!

ingleshteechur - 2011-01-31 12:58 PM Ok, I'm going to try really hard not to come off sounding like a paranoid woman, but I'm a little concerned about my thighs!

Best I can do from work.

Yes, you need to practice climbing.  Have you checked the course you will be doing?  You can develop a training route to test the same kinds of challenges.   On the trainer, my coach has me do a mix of low cadence, high power, high cadence high power, single pedal drills, etc.   It's all good.  And believe me, I am not kidding, when the weight comes off and the fitness improves, the legs will look great!
