Expert 683 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Oh, how I've missed the glorious insanity of this group! Hilde, your creativity never ceases to amaze me, and Wilson, it's lovely to have you back! End of last week was finals around here, hence the few days without logging: took care of that now. Thanks for the inspires and votes of confidence, gang! As for the marathon, for those who've asked, I plan to see how it goes by how I feel (the goal is to finish smiling and uninjured!) and where my fitness seems to be in order to decide whether to do the full IM this year or next. (A full IM there WILL be!) I'll do my last long run tomorrow before starting to taper; will also try Galloway's run/walk method and see how long & far I get out there. Supposed to be warm here tomorrow, so this will definitely be a morning run. The other good news from here is that I did my first group bike ride since my accident last year-- yes, on exactly the same route as the accident itself! Once I got past the accident site and could persuade myself to release the white-knuckle grip on the handlebars, I really enjoyed it...and I could keep up with the ride leaders pretty easily, so all my time on the trainer hasn't been a complete waste! Speed sensor on the bike wasn't working, alas, so have no idea what pace we were going; will fix that this week so I'll know next time. Congrats to all the recent racers and a belated Happy Mothers Day to all MMMer moms! (Hilde, I look forward to receiving my copy of the MMMer magazine when it appears in print!) Have a great week, everyone! Alex (PS: apologies for the lack of paragraphs. Silly mobile version won't include them for some reason!) |

Veteran 421 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Great race Melanie! You are FAST! I got my bike yesterday and have started to get to know her. I changed out the saddle. I removed the toe cages (for now) and the extra pedal reflectors that held them on. I added 2 mismatching bottle holders, LOL! I put in a skewer that allows me to put it on my trainer. I'm currently investigating a chain rub on the front derailler. It's not bad and I understand that some noise when cross chaining is expected. The thing is that it seems to be there in either ring when on the smaller/outer sprockets. I'll get a good look at it while its on the trainer. Got some internet info to guide me a bit. I may just learn much more about bike with these little tweaks. I'm no mechanic, but I'm not too afraid to fiddle with some smaller adjustments. Edited by rustymom 2012-05-15 5:53 PM |

I hand pedaled on the trainer and watched how it worked. |

Expert 1007 Missouri | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Melanie – congrats on your race! Nice job! Andrea – have fun with the new bike! I’m slowly getting back into training mode. The next couple of weeks may be hit and miss though. We’ve got DD’s HS graduation, my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary (lots of family in town for that), plus assorted other things going on. I tried to account for those things in my plan, but we’ll see how it goes. Need some opinions here on which tri to sign up for. These are the ones I’m looking at (both sprints with pool swims): 7/29 – Tour de Kirkwood (400yd/12.3m/3m). Pros – little bit shorter bike course, I’ve heard good things about it. Cons – not really familiar with the course, most expensive. 8/19 – Alligator’s Creek (300yd/18.6m/3.1m). Pros – I’ve done it before so I’m familiar with the course, it’s practically in my backyard. Cons – longer bike course, very hilly bike and run courses. Right now I’m leaning towards Kirkwood with Alligator’s Creek a close second. I considered doing both but don’t think the budget will allow it. Since the bike is where I still need a lot of work, I’m thinking that the shorter/less hilly bike course might make Kirkwood the better choice. Any thoughts? Janet2 If you do Alligator with the harder bike, would it push you to train harder on the bike over the next two months?? If so I say, go for the one that will be more challenging. If you don't think it will push you, then I say go for the one that you think will be more fun! |

Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! We have racers this weekend!!! Give them some love.... Joe has a 20 mile run on Saturday... with horrid hills, so he equates it to a marathon! Go Joe, KILL dem hills!! Melanie has ANOTHER tri on Sunday... hopefully she can quit slacking taking 2nd place and snatch the 1st place or Master's award this time. Jeez Melanie, speed it up!! And Kristen has a 10K on Sunday. Go get it Kristen!!!!
Good luck and good training to the rest of you!!! I have discovered that Motivation comes in many shapes and sizes.... when it disappears when you want to train, it appears when you are eating! I am really feeling the string of peachy days I've put in, body was just plain tired when I got home yesterday in spite of the fact that I actually got out a little early, so I bagged a brick I had planned. And yet I had NO problems stuffing my face with whatever I could get my hands on!!! Then again, I had to eat my lunch at 10:30 a.m. yesterday, so no wonder I was starving at 3!! I did get a bunch of stuff caught up on that I needed to, so not a total waste. |

Veteran 421 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! I had my first "getting to know" my bike ride today. Shifting: At times I shifted the opposite way to what I intended. I'll have to ride more outside to get the hang. Braking: I find that I tend to brake with the rear brake only. Probably from stories of my Mom mistakenly laying on the front brake as a child and flipping over. I need to use both at times. Also, I feel like I'm able to squeeze the brake better from the drops. I'm sure I look strange with on hand in the drops pulling the brake lever. Seat: My butt is fine even with "only" tri-shorts on. I did swap the original seat out as it seemed narrow and hard. I think it's at a pretty good height, angle and distance from bars.

My bike shorts with bigger pads aren't as comfortable for some reason. So that's terrific you've found a seat that works for you so soon! Have fun on it! |
