Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeh guys, leaving any minute now for the campground. I do not think that there is any way to track me. Yes I appear to be mostly intact, new tires on the bike, new shift cables in, everything should be good. Just this morning I was feeling a little less fatigued from the past 2 weeks. Tomorrow is off and then well it is race time. I think I will be swiming without a wetsuit, the ows I did on Tuesday was pretty warm in a local lake. Core workouts help, don't overdue it. Primary benefits are on the bike and swim. I should be at a computer on Sunday to report in after the race. Take care all. Forecast still for 100F +. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hope you are having a good rest day, Steve. I did a 4 mile run this AM, and about 3 miles in I was really laboring, and had a nasty side stich, which I never get. For the heck of it, I checked my heart rate, and it was over 170 bpm. Seemed ridiculously high, so I slowed down, and finished the run without any furhter issues. Weird. tomorrow is a bike day. For now, I'm going back to Olympics watching. |

Even more impressive (for me anyway) was that I held in my pee the entire way!!!! L o l. I was hurting so bad that I was cramping!! Good race & the most beautiful vineyards!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Goooooo Steve!!!! Mike, was it hotter than normal maybe for your run? Like the olympics watching plan. 62 miles on the bike at the Tour de Cure this morning, wooohooo!!! Longest previous distance was 43ish. Really didn't have any trouble getting it done; though ready to get off at the end. Teamed up with a couple of folks from my diabetes/exercise club, and that really helped it stay interesting. Kerry had a good time doing the 15 miler, and was there at the finish line |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pre- Race: Arrive about 5:45, which was still early enough to find a nice end spot on the rack. All I could think is stay calm and reserve the energy. My wife and daughter were there to cheer me on. There were two gels in my bag and created a bit of uncertainty. Should I have one before the start, or at T1 and T2? I chose to wait. Swim: Started well, free styling for about 1-2 hundred yards. The waves were broken up very nicely in about 30 people per, so not much contact at all. I was definitely MOP and passed/ caught up to a few people from the first two waves. Walked out of the water tired and feeling great! Split 20:18 for the 880yrds. T1: Slow by some standards at 3:14. First thing was to drink about 16 oz of water. I usually drink some between laps at the pool and obviously could not do that. I grabbed a gel and did not want to waist any more time than I already took cleaning the feet, putting the socks and shoes on. No flying starts for me. Not yet. Bike: The bike was in low gear ready for the first hill I was warned about. So the start went well. The next three miles are in a gated community so I did not get to see all the hills that were there. At one point I commented to someone that I hope there are no more like that one and he responded they were coming. The last hill I was a bit concerned over turned out to be no problem and I even passed a few people on the way up. The bike felt good and time was right in line with training at 40:45 for the 10.8 miles. At mile 6 I took some of the gel but was not prepared for how messy it can get. Will have to think that one through for next time. T2: Again a bit slow at 2:38 but I was being a bit deliberate about things. I felt good and did not take any gel, was afraid that with no water, it would turn bad. Run: First 1.5 felt terrible with lots of walking. Seemed to have all turned out for best though as I turned in a great time at 30:39 for the 5k. Did not get a good feel for the pace until late. Probably did not help watch people, some of them relay people, fly by. Good number of water stations along the way and I hit them all. Great race, well organized. Kept safe with plenty of police and volunteers. Here is a link , hope it works to the pic’s on facebook. I am bib #241.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! I'm hangin in Montana enjoying friends and getting some sweet time doing fun things. Yesterday I went white water rafting and had the most fun I've ever had on a river. Training has been in the back seat, but I'm okay with that because relational time is my priority this weekend. Plus switching back to a normal schedule. Elena and Joe- so excited for you both. Great job on your races. I look forward to reading race reports. Steve- hoping you had an awesome day! Waiting for the report! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally broke 20 mph for a ride. I essentially did a 10 mile time trial and finished at 29:23 (20.4 mph). It was pretty calm, but if anything I was riding into a small breeze most of the time. I just need to figure out how to do this without a heart rate in the 150's. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just got in. I will give more details later, but 44 min swim, 2:51 bike 1:51 run total 5:34:18 ish for a 10 min PR and 1st in age group. Temps got up to around 103F I think. Swim was without a wetsuit and 7 minutes faster than in april and about my usual speed when I am in good shape. Bike was 19.8 mph consistent the whole way with 1 pitstop. The run was horrid. The first and last 4-4.5 miles was on 3 inch deep sand with some gravel lightly sprinkled in here and there so each foot prent went in about 2-3 inches. The footing alone cost me about 10 min on the run and then it was very hot and dry. My pace was slower than I wanted throughout the run mostly 8:30 ish miles with some variation. When I finished I drank an initial 76 oz of fluids and then another couple litres later. Very happy with the race, especially the bike and overal 10 min PR on a harder course. The water dumping helped but I was dry within about 6 minutes again. I couldn't drink too much water on the run because my sides were slightly crampy, but I drank enough to not affect my during the race. My son came in 3rd overall in the under 18 age group for the open (the 14 year old) and my other son got 2nd in age group behind his cousin. Overall the camping was HOT. Lake temp was about 77. It was a lovely temp to swim with no wetsuit. Way to go the rest of you on a long bike ride and the aquabike and sprint tri etc. Yes heat can make your HR go way up, which means you are probably out in the heat underhydrated or just too hot in general. Good of you to slow down. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol - Very nice bike and for a great cause. Steve - That is one very successful weekend! You certainly have your work cut out for you staying ahead of all that competition. I tested the legs last night on a short bike 5.9miles in 23 min. Still not committed to the next race. Lk Goerge is a bit far and other start getting late in the season for comfortable swimming. Will see. My friend had an after race BBQ where I got to meet some of the other competitors and it was really neat to hear their experiences. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome job Steve!!!! And how fun that your sons also did so well. Ha, teenagers are bouncy like tigger Joe, way to go on your first TRI!!!! Sounds like a great day, and your times were right in line with your goals, which makes it even better! I suspect you are hooked, no?? Samantha, hope you had a great weekend with your friends. Good for you for prioritizing relationships and finding balance in life. Larry, great job on your 20+ MPH time trial! You are continuing to get stronger. What was your speed when you first started biking? Tireder than I originally thought after the ride, so did not workout yesterday (other than cleaning house). Our forecast is calling for highs above 100 and lows not going below 80 all week, so I'm acutally thinking of seeking out a treadmill option, or running on the community center's indoor track.

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 20 mile bike ride today to shake out the legs. The calves are a bit sore from the sand, thighs from the overall effort and hips from the bike. But overall doing well. Bike was 19 mph at reasonably effort level on the flat. Oh I looked up the race results and I was 10th fastest on the run even with the slower than expected speed. And the race had some serious speed in it with the top finishers in the low to mid 4 hour finishes. Fastest overall bike time was 24 mph (were some hills, wind heat), fastest run was sub 7 mpm, and fastest swim was a 1:20/100 pace. I hope that folks are noting how far they have come. Knocking out long bike rides, aquabikes etc. It is all that base building that we have been talking about since the group started that makes your body capable of doing these things. I certainly would not say go ride 60+ miles if you had not already put in some solid bike base work. Same for the HIM's, aquabikes, etc. The base work feels less exciting, tiring etc., but it lets you jump to those big accomplishments. It is a journey however. It is one thing to complete a distance, but then another thing to do it faster. I am really happy that my bike is finally starting to improve after 20,000 miles of base work. It does not all come as quickly as we would like, but it does come. Finish those last workouts I want to see some nice monthly totals for the month! Edited by Baowolf 2012-07-30 2:17 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So what is next, Steve? As of yesterday, I"m officially entered in the Cape Cod Half Marathon on 10/27. They let me switch from the full to half without any problems. Training plan kicks off next week, but I'm getting back into some regular runs after being a slug most of July. Will be heading out tonight for another one. May have to miss masters swim tomorrow due to eye problems. Both of my eyes over the past 3 or 4 days have become very red and just not feeling normal. Off to the eye doc today to get a diagnosis, and hopefully something to fix this. Looks like I"ve spent a week at a Cheech & Chong film festival. I'm hoping the doc doesn't tell me to avoid the pool, but should this be some infection, I don't think I should be in the pool anyway, since it could spread and it just flat out gross. I'll use my missed pool time to get in another run. Edited by Mike_D 2012-07-31 6:17 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Forgot to add -- since I wear contacts, and I'm blind as a bat without them, swimming just won't work if I can't use them. Swimming with glasses isnt going to happen, and not wanting to bash my head into the wall, I'lll be OK w/o the pool for a day ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, good job getting your running game back on and signed up for the half marathon! Hope you get some relief for your eyes today. Steve, 24 mph on a bike is nuts. I have no idea how that is even possible! Samantha, you back at it yet? Took off on Sunday, and then unplanned rest day yesterday, but back at it again today with a run this morning, and a bike this evening. Supposed to hit 106 today and 108 the next two. Doesn't drop below 80 at night. I'm about ready to renounce my status as a Texan and move to Canada! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The next big race will be the HITTS full disance tri in December. I am debating doing a half mary in the fall. I am really hoping that I can go faster than 18 mph for a flattish full and still have a mary time of 3:40 or less. Swim will be what it will be, maybe I can get back down to 1:25:00 or slighlty faster by december, we see. But swim 1:25, bike 6:10, run 3:35 with T1 4:00, t2 1:00 would be a perfect IM for my current fitness. 11:15:00 or so. My best IM so far is 11:40, but Palm Springs should be a flatter bike. By the way they have prescription swim goggles for about $25 or so. I use them and love them. I hate contacts. You just can't work for 16 hours in a pair of conacts without feeling like you need to claw your eyes out. And I am so not a morning person that cleaning and putting in contacts every morning was... not user friendly me. Edited by Baowolf 2012-07-31 4:28 PM |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I ran 6 miles at a 9:25 overall pace this morning. I ran at Z4 for 10 minutes and was under an 8:00 pace. I also did this run at 4:00 a.m as we are on the football field at 6:00 sharp for football practice. |
