bcraht - 2012-07-18 6:21 PM If you were rich, and already had all the Tri gear you wantedLaughing, what would you spend your money on?   I'll start.  I would audit courses (cause I like to learn, but I HATE taking exams and writing papers) and I would buy books.  And build a library in my house, with a big fluffy chair, and a fireplace, and a ladder that moved so I could reach all my books.

This'll be fun!

1. Vacations

2. A vacation home in Costa Rica big enough to host all my friends and family and Manatees

3. A hobby farm with horses, cattle, and a huge wetland for duck hunting.

4. a Sweetazz RV for my parents so they could go on adventures

5. a couple more dogs (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, please!)

(OK, that's 5 - but It really hard to pick just one thing! - but if i had to, I'd spend all my $$ on vacations!)

Asalzwed - 2012-07-18 4:48 PM Alright, sorry about the Krakauer kick but Into the Wild is my very favorite. If you like those kind of books I would also recommend Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Aron Ralston. They made a film about the book (127 Hours.) I think it's well written and just an exciting read.

I just downloaded Into the Wild from my library.  Thanks for all of the awesome recommendations.  I have lots to read for the rest of the summer.

Oooo, I'll play.  I love thinking about this stuff.
1.  I'd take courses too.  I love academia.
2.  Vacation homes in VT, NC and Tuscany.
3.  Private tutors for my kids.
4.  College fund for the kids.
5.  Boat/Jet Skis
6.  Start a organization for high functioning autistic kids as they transition to adulthood.  We are really lacking in this area around here.
7.  Books

That's all I can think of for now but I am sure I'm forgetting something.

If you liked Into thin Air you should read: The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev - Gives the other side of the story and is SO interesting!  JK is a fantastic writer, but I changed my opinion of what happened on Everest that day after reading the Climb.

(BTW - I'm TOTALLY obsessed with climbing books - let me know if you interested, I have a couple other's that are good - abt K2)

Yeah. Krakauer was a little rough on Anatoli; I thought that even while I was reading his book. I got a little defensive for him. I thought he really did do all he could. Krakauer made him sound like a heartless bastard, and I don't think that fit with what else he had said about him or with his actions once he realized people were lost.

I decided I did want to read The Climb to get the other side; your post reminded me.

Something about Eddie isnt' there!  Hm if I was super-rich maybe i could buy him!

If I had heaps of money I'd travel - still use tri as the reason to do so - like to tri my way around the world.

I would also buy a nice big villa on the island of Kefalonia in Greece - heck I may buy the island with their current economic situation!  This is where i met my husband 22 years ago (he was a barman!), we got married there and we go back every time we visit Europe - next year is on!  It would be big enough for all our friends and family to come and stay or to use whenever they wanted.

I would also have a nice property in Queensland for the winter months when I'm not in Europe!

I would still work but maybe within the triathlon world (why don't I try and do that anyway...) - I would like to work giving something back - maybe for the Ironman Foundation....

Anyway that's me!  A dreamer - such a sagittarian!

Ha! I'm a Sagittarius too!

Okay, I don't want to sound like a total granola head/Oregon girl here, but if I were rich, I would quit my job, but continue to teach/lecture. I would buy some land and a very small, self-sufficient cabin (solar, wind, etc), and then with the rest of the money, start some kind of non-profit for social issues -- I have no idea what social issue, just something -- maybe literacy or Math/Sciences/Engineering -- something for kids related to education -- something to give them more opportunities.

Oh, and I'd love to give a TED Talk on something. Maybe about my non-profit or my cool cabin.

Obviously I'm never going to be rich because I haven't fleshed this out at all!! I never play the lottery, and I don't know if I'll ever have time to write a best selling series that will be turned into Hollywood blockbusters. So, there you go. Laughing

Wow, I stay off the computer for a few days and the threads go CRAZY! I got caught up though, so I wanna play too!!!

I wouldof course this is after paying off all the debt we have!)

--Buy a nice country place (i.e. something that isn't RIGHT next to a busy road, with a bit of space), have a nice large pond, gardens, both decorative and food providing, and space to house any outdoor-living reptile pets (like my turtles, tortoises and the tegu)

--Build a large multi-purpose sports hall--with space for a hockey ring (it would be dry land, not ice--too much effort there), an obstacle course for me to play on, and a street course for bmx bikes (something my husband used to do, and I always wanted to try.

--I would build a full martial arts dojo--and hire many teachers and learn many disciplines (especially Capoeira, Shotokan Karate, and some WuShu)

--Travel--to Australia, back to Sicily, Europe, Indonesia (OF COURSE!!), and some nifty spots--like the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, maybe to Madagascar too.

I have said that I would definitely be donating money to my zoo--for every animal area, however, I would give a big chunk just to fully remodel (or maybe bulldoze and build a new) the reptile house, build some outdoor large reptile exhibits  (KOMODO DRAGONS!!!! CROCS!!! and bunches of LARGE TURTLES!!!

If it's been a while since you read "Air" you should read it again, then read the Climb right after.  You'll be an Anatoli fan for sure after the Climb.  I agree, JK was super hard on him - it's really interesting to read Anatoli's perspective!

taking a break from the rich daydream - just did a lunchtime run - very slow today, but I did the longer circuit which is way more hilly.

Anyway 6.25km in 45mins.  Happy to have done it!  Squad tonight.  I feel I may have found my training mojo!  Thanks for sticking with me!

Interesting .  Sounds like we have quite a few of us who would like some nice land with some critters.  Of course, that is where my library would go, in my house, with a wraparound deck, surrounded by farmland.

Got a short bike in tonight.  Getting close to my challenge goal!

Hey Salty, you were talking about doing a race together.  You seem like a music buff.  Here (Linky-poo) is one that has different international music every mile.  Best part?  Start is 2 minutes from my house.  Interested?

ETA: never mind, just noticed you have a race the next weekend.  Maybe next year?

Cool ideas!

One question: whats a tegu?? photo?

well, since you asked....

This is me with my tegu (an Argentine lizard), Tangaroa; about a year or so ago.

A better close up of his face. They get about 3 feet long, have a HUGE mouth, and are pretty smart. Tango is a total sweetheart (hence the first photo), which is surprising, as he had been neglected, then left outside the zoo on a cold November night!

bcraht - 2012-07-18 12:48 PM Got a good swim in this morning.  Something the coach said last week, coupled with Yanti's swim hint from yesterday, clicked for me (I have been doing breast stroke wrong all these years...).  I felt smooooooth this morning.  I have a ride on tap for later as well.  Hope everyone has a great day!

Nice, what a feeling! What was the hint? Did I miss it? I need all the helpful hints out there, especially since Allen is peer-pressuring me into an ocean swim!!

Chris, Brie.   You signed up yet? I hope so.

Dooooooooooooooooooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttt     !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW.

(worry later)

Oh Weebly One, when is your next tri?  Innocent

Oooooh, double busted!

i FORGOT THAT Janyne has an encyclopaedic knowledge of every race that every Manatee has logged.

Ok, so here's the thing. I cunningly decided to enter the Grafman olympic distance on 12th August without actually registering or parting with any money. This was because i was scared concerned that i may not be able to get ready in time for the event and also the idea of having to set off at 4am in time to sign in etc and then be knackered for the race itself. It was also the latest race i could enter before i go on my annual holidays, 5 days later.

However, my holidays have now been postponed by a few days, leaving the weekend of 18th/19th August also available as i fly out to Turkey on the Monday. This gives me 3 options and i welcome your thoughts as well as the usual abuse etc.

1. Go for the Grafman Oly on August 12th. It is 2hrs away. Also has HIM event running at the same time

2. Go for the Erewash Sprint Tri on August 19th (pool based) ready for this right now.

3.Go for the Udo's Choice Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (olympic distance) August 19th. 1 hour away so more user friendly. Also gives me one week extra training.

So, comments....

Since I've bailed on my Oly - because I legitimately don't think I'm ready, of course - I would not fault you for doing the same.  I hate feeling like I have to cram training in; makes the race not as special, I think.  And that extra week of training probably isn't going to make much of a difference, except mentally.  I would vote for the sprint, but what are you leaning towards?

My common sense tells me to put in a really good effort at the sprint. It is the easiest for me logistically and the target for my first sprint was just to finish. On this one, i could push harder and see my progress.

Unfortunately, common sense occasionally desserts me, and as such, the challenge of the later Oly keeps creeping in under the radar. Also i keep hearing chicken noises when i think of doing the Sprint. If i do the Oly however, i am back to aiming just to finish, as i have never yet come close to any of the distances involved whilst training, nevermind doing them back to back.

bcraht - 2012-07-19 3:19 AM Feeding time for the Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches in the Biology Dept..... Note in the first pic the one sitting upside down on the branch with the apple in his mouth.

Oh, so cool! I actually like roaches (when I like them and don't perceive them as vermin, kinda like rats) ... when I was a child I saw this roach so enormous, I just had to have him for a pet and I named him Howard and fed him all kinds of things. He liked soap, for the fat I imagine.

Did you know male roaches have SIX penes? No wonder they proliferate like they do ...

Asalzwed - 2012-07-18 3:48 PM Alright, sorry about the Krakauer kick but Into the Wild is my very favorite. If you like those kind of books I would also recommend Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Aron Ralston. They made a film about the book (127 Hours.) I think it's well written and just an exciting read.

Oh Oh!  In addition to "The Climb," read:

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks, 2007 and

K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain, Aug 2010

Both by Ed Viesturs.

Make sure you read the Climb - it'll change your mind about the whole thing!! It's good!!

I'm going to have to do that!

Reading all these climbing books solidifies the fact that I don't EVER want to climb anything significant. I had thought about Rainier 14,411 (here is WA) but I don't even know about that.

That's funny. I like climbing books too but the more I read them the less I want to climb. I've done two big (okay, semi-big, for here): Kinabalu 13,500ft and Gede 3000m (whatever that is in feet) but I'm done. Kinda like skydiving.

A great one is Touching My Father's Soul, by Jamling Tenzing Norgay (the son of Tenzing Norgay, first co-summiter of Everest along with Sir Edmund Hillary).

bcraht - 2012-07-19 7:21 AM If you were rich, and already had all the Tri gear you wantedLaughing, what would you spend your money on?   I'll start.  I would audit courses (cause I like to learn, but I HATE taking exams and writing papers) and I would buy books.  And build a library in my house, with a big fluffy chair, and a fireplace, and a ladder that moved so I could reach all my books.

About the same. (I assume you'd also start a charitable foundation in an area of interest because that's how you roll, and me too). I love exams and papers, though. Tangible effects of learning. I'd really like to get a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

The only part I'm really sorry about when I left the States is that I had about 10,000 books that were way too expensive to ship. I cried when I gave them away. I let my friends pick them over first (and that was very nice because I knew they really wanted them and to read them), and then took the rest to Goodwill. WAAAAAAH

Home for family, vehicle (a simple Jeep 4 door) and travel. I think those are a given for most everyone in one form or another. Then some work with my church, Habitat for Humanity, and the local Homeless Foundation. The last part would be to take a bike mechanic training course and begin building custom, one off, carbon Tri-bikes and road bikes. We have one really good triathlete in the area that rides an old road bike. And she still blows away the competition. I would love to see her racing on a piece of equipment that she can push to it's limits. I'd probably sponsor her as well, b/c she has the talent.
