If we did not invade we would have looked weak in the eyes of our enemies and would have to attack to save face. Huh?
We had to invade Iraq because they might be creating nuclear weapons in the future. If they created them they might have thought about using it on us. Plus we could not back out because it would emboldened our enemies. Now we have a guy that has them. He said he is going to use them. Maybe has the capabilities to hit maybe hit us soil (Guam). Hey, Guam maybe small but its still USA and no one messes with the USA.
More importantly, Footlocker has a store in Guam. There are a few BTers on Guam Swimming away is great training. Stores do not swim. Nice. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Could someone give a quick synopsis or point me in the right direction to a summary of what exactly the problem is? Why does this joker from North Korea hate the US so much, and South Korea for that matter? Why is he threatening to launch missiles at us and start a war? I feel there's some underlying backstory that I don't know very well and I hate being uninformed on such important world matters. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The guy is completely nuts, so the thing I'm having trouble understanding is why we're making a bit of a show of our military presence in the area? If we were dealing with someone more rational, like with the USSR during the cold war, it makes sense, but this seems like a completely different situation. Am I the only one who thinks it just increases the chances of this lunatic doing something really stupid?

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I knew it was serious business when my dad, who works for homeland security and civil defense, emailed me fact sheets and "how tos" for preparation. The kids at my daughter's school were also kept in the concrete, school cafeteria for after-school pickup today. I'm still not taping off a room in the house just yet, but I'm about ready to refresh the disaster kit. This is the first time in all the years of N. Korea unrest that I'm not waving them off with a laugh. I've got one eye on life, and the other on the news. Edited by Blanda 2013-04-10 6:48 AM |

There's plenty out there I can "google" or read on the internet all about their military capabilities, the range of their missiles, what China thinks about all this and how crazy the rest of the world thinks their leader is. But when it comes down to the pure fundamentals of why they're acting this way, what their problem is and what they hope to accomplish there's not a lot out there. To simplify a complex geopolitical subject, The US involvement in Korea was basically part of the US strategy of communist containment (the Truman Doctrine). The idea being that if neighboring countries fell to communism then it was likely that the countries in that region would also fall to communism. So the push was to surround the USSR with NATO like organizations to prevent expansion of communism. The Korean peninsula is a relic of the Cold War. |

North Korean army is 2x larger than Iran. They have the largest in the world if you count the reserves. They are doing missile tests and have nuclear weapons. Until the week ago or so people were way more worried about Iran. I heard so many people begging to go to war because they might work to getting a nuclear weapon even though Iran claims otherwise. North Korea we tend to look at as a joke and yet are ready to go. |

North Korea we tend to look at as a joke and yet are ready to go. I fail to see any point. NK has little to no gas. Their troops aren't going anywhere. NK has no real guidance system for their rockets. Their missiles aren't going anywhere. It's going to take about 6 months before NK's reactor that creates fissionable material is even operational. If NK sends a dirty bomb into Seoul, that will have real world implications. Same with China or Japan. Iran is already more or less in check with all the stuff that's been in the Middle East for years. All of that is already targeted. Who the hell begs to go to war? |

Actually, I would bet the place would have already been turned into a spec of dust if NK was located just about anywhere else in the world than where it is. But since they are geographically and politically fairly contained they don't require the daily attention of an Iran to protect American security and interests.

But when it comes down to the pure fundamentals of why they're acting this way, what their problem is and what they hope to accomplish there's not a lot out there. Good point here. When we discuss whether or not their leader is insane, well, there's actually a good amount of logic to his threats. If the USA escalates military displays, it actually HELPS him. Because the entire country has a fully locked down 100% government news / propaganda machine. With the tension ratcheting up, in the USA we think - big deal, we won't start a war. But you can bet their people are very afraid of exactly that. That's how their government portrays us. They get little other information from outside. So when we do a show of force, it only reinforces their support for the regime. Not to mention, joining the army is one of the ways to get food on your table in NK... Perhaps because NK isn't really the threat and we can only have limited response in any case. China is the big brother in that one. We can only defend South Korea. |

He had babies and his babies had babies...that's it? Kind of downplaying the events a bit don't you think. You left out the part where his son's birth changed winter in to spring, caused a new star to appear in the sky, a freaking iceberg talked! The man learned to walk at 3 weeks, talk at 8 weeks, and never once in his life defecated. On second thought, you might be on to something with the whole wacko angle. |
