Detroit Dan - 2009-06-11 10:53 AM Wait. With all the `blame the refs' and `The Pens are tooooo physical' you're actually posting that? Pot. Kettle. The Red Wings seem to think this is a Brian Boitano revue with the way they whine and moan about the physicality and their fans are CONSTANTLY saying `It's the ref's fault this went to seven games' and `Pittsburgh has too many thugs' ... it's hockey, ladies. Man up and play and quit with the whining.
Pittsburgh doesn't have thugs...it just so happens their physical players are good with the puck too. It's not the Pens fault that the Wings could not convert on their Powerplay...with all the penalties the Pens took, you would think it wouldn't have gone to 7 games. I think the Wings are just getting old and can't even handle a bump on the boards anymore

The thuggishness is completely attributable to cheap shots, both during play and after play, from the pens. I've no issue whatsoever with tough play and hitting hard. Both teams are bringing it, but Malkin and Sid and Orpick all got out of line in the first couple games. To their credit, they have shaped up since game 3.
And on the age thing...the Wings' average age
(minus chelios
) is 29.9, whereas the pens are 28.1. Not a shocking difference there. The wings' get the 'old' rap because many of the 'noteable' players are older; Lidstrom 39, Osgood 36, Draper 38, McCarty 37, Chelios 47, and Kirk Maltby 36. But Draper, McCarty, Maltby and Chelios don't play, whereas Detroit's 4 best players
(non-goalie
) were Zetterberg
(28
), Brad Stuart
(29
), Darrin Helm
(22
), and Datsyuk
(30
), and leading scorer Abdelkador
(22
).
Pittsburgh's 3 best players are really young: Sid, Malkin, Fleury. That's the perception difference, but I think age
(other than Lidstrom
) is a non-factor. Plus, we'll sign whoever your best player is this offseason anyway.
Wings, 4-2. 1-1 in the first period --> Detroit scores 2 in the 2nd --> Pittsburgh mounts a rally to bring it to 3-2 in the 3rd, but Wings get an empty-netter to ice the victory.
