can you please email my wife and tell her that? She's ready for divorce, as I've been mumbling about adding another race for 2009

Dear Mrs. Keith,

Before you go and do something foolish, like divorce your husband, there is something that you should know...He Rocks!

Sincerely,

The Longhirn BTers.

p.s. - I hear it is very, very good for your marriage to let your husband add races to his already busy schedule...especially iron distance races in Texas.

She just needs to look at it from a different angle -> at least you are *making* some money with your obsession (I hope...); as opposed to those of us who are only *spending* amounts of money we don't care to truly quantify

I guess I'm just jealous of anyone smart enough to find a job doing something they are really passionate about.

I take that back...I'd trade it for lying on a beach, being fanned, and fed grapes. That would take some of the sting away....

naahhh, watching triathlon is boring. DOING triathlon is fun. Watching the Red Sox or Patriots play while on the beach would be ok, though

I am feeling guilty about coming to Texas to race and have a good time when so many Texans are dealing with Ike's aftermath.

I agree. We're about to postpone Hi Fi Tri in Galveston, and are heartbroken for the people there, and what they're dealing with...

We're working on some things to help them out, but honestly, at this time, there's very little we can do. For Galveston, the dust has to settle, and they have to get a handle on what needs to be done. That's gonna be a little time.

There is still no communication, power, etc on the island.

I've told our crew, who have been trying to work on things to help Galveston, that we need to focus on Longhorn right now. After that, I'm guessing things will be a bit clearer in terms of what Galveston's needs are. THEN, we can REALLY help....

Please let us know if there's anything we can do. Maybe instead of the tri, we can get a group down there to volunteer or something.

Agreed, Keith. I'm sure plenty of folks here would like to help out in some way, whether it's volunteering or donating.

While there are certainly plenty of organizations to get involved with, I'd love to be able to go through you guys.

There's not really a tactful way to say this, but I'd like for us (triathletes) to get some credit as a group. We could all donate on our own via the Red Cross, etc, or course. However, I don't feel any guilt and don't see any problem in making it clear to the city of Galveston that we like the location and enjoy racing there enough to donate our time and money to help it recover.

With your Lonestar and Hi-Fi mailing lists, you could probably generate a pretty sizable fund/group. I doubt most folks would mind getting that kind of solicitation from you.

Maybe instead of racing Longhorn, I should take the money it would cost me for travel/lodging/meals and make a donation?

This is more for the Hi-Fi Tri than anything but since this post has turned into the "what do we do" post.  Here goes...

What if we (the triathletes/race org) organized on the scheduled race day (Oct. 25th) and instead of racing this year, we volunteered to help the community get back on it's feet?  I agree with Dennis that there is no shame in letting the community know that the people who were going to race are there as a group to help them.

What say ye? Keith?

Our crew has thought of doing that as well, but we really have to wait and see if they're actually ready for people to help at that point.

I'll start chatting with them soon, and see. After longhorn, They'll have had a month to get a handle on the situation.

Right now, we can't plan anything. BUT, I think a huge crew showing up to help out would be awesome, and much appreciated. I keep telling everyone we just need to be patient, as there's nothing we can do at this moment. The island isn't open, there is no power, etc. I can't even communicate with them. We've gotten a few emails, but not much info....

So Keith will keep us updated on what we can do. In the meantime, it's time to drag this thread back on topic.

Everyone needs to think positive thoughts so that the weather trends we've been seeing hold right through the race. We're right on the seasonal averages right now. For race day that means an overnight low of 64 and a high of 85. Keep in mind that if we get those temps, it's likely to be below 80 until after noon. That'll be awesome.
