Thanks Chris I found it under the FAQs for the IMAZ site.

Looks like they have Powerbars and Bananas for the bike. For a minute there I was afarid that there was no solid food available. Would have thrown a monkey wrench into my carrying as little as possible plan.

So, if you had the entire month of May off from work (but continued to get paid), with great weather and access to OWS anytime you wanted it... what would you do with the time?

'Cuz that's me!

If I were you, I would quit this job of yours, but let your boss know that a guy in Texas would be happy to take it over for you...

Well, I AM leaving this job - I'm burning up my remaining leave days after 10 years in the Marine Corps. Go see your local recruiter - he'll hook you right up!

Hi,

Partly due to the stories of training and racing here on BT, I was inspired to signup for IMAZ.  I'm already getting nervous.  I think it is probably time to start making some travel arrangements and I wonder where is the most convenient place to stay during race week?  I will be arriving Thursday and will be followed by wife and kids Friday night or Saturday afternoon.  Any hotel recommendations?  Is anything in walking distance to the start, besides the host hotel?  I heard there is a Embassy Suites nearby, how would that work?

Thanks for any and all advice!

www.vrbo.com

I had a two bedroom condo for the week...half mile from the start.

How did the condo work out? How would I go about looking for something like that?  Thanks...  Lori

The condo was awesome.  They usually come fully furnished with all the basic kitchen gadgets so I was able to cook most of my meals myself.  MUCH nicer than being in a hotel.  Mine had a washer/dryer too.  And it was two bedroom so it's easy to split with another athlete or bring the whole family.

Most of them rent "by the week" but their weekly rate is usually less than what four nights in a hotel would be.  I ended up only using 6 of my 7 days.  I guess you could always negotiate with the owner.

Just DO NOT rent a condo in the complex right on Rio Salado about a quarter mile from transition.  OMG, there is this TRAIN that will come through and wake you up every hour or so all night.  The whistle cuts through the paper thin walls like you would not believe!  I rented one of those when I was down there training for IMAZ and I hardly slept all week.

The place I had FOR IMAZ was on Hardy...totally walkable (though, maybe not AFTER the race...I was glad my friend brought my car down and drove me home).

www.vrbo.com and just start contacting owners with the dates you want.  If it doesn't give the address you might have to ask where it is.  I just asked them how far the place was from the corner of Mill and Rio Salado which is about where the finish line is.

Good call on the train. I had already seen the condos on vrbo and didn't even think of that.

I'm thinking of signing up for '10 and wondering what registration was like this past November. It went on line I recall but how quickly did it fill?

I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to fly out to the race and volunteer or risk signing up on line. It is Thanksgiving weekend and with 5 kids not a great time to go away for the weekend even though it would be a great time.

We have reservations to go up to Lake Placid and are debating if we want to go or not as I think I want to do another IM not Placid again. It is so complicated deciding a year out.

KG - I just did a quick search on ST, looks like it sold out in about 5 - 6 hours on 11/24, when it went on sale....   At least there was a reference to that.

But last year is an outlier, remember they let athletes from two races, April and Nov, sign up on site, so it's hard to tell.

Seems like I should be able to sign up on line. There are always other options to get in if I can't.  I wonder if it will be more popular as folks have adjusted to the new fall date or it will follow like IMKY that still is taking awhile to sell out.

If I were a betting man ( and I am.....) I would bet you get in Monday morning online.

Kathy- It might be less expensive to take the chance and if it sells out, buy a community slot. Not sure how much your plane tickets would be though?

I volunteered last year then signed up the next day but several of my friends slept in and registered later that day.

For me I usually fly free as my husband travels a lot but it is a tough holiday weekend so that option is most likely out. The fun factor is huge to go sign up, see the course, cheer folks and all that.

I'm doing some talking with some of my tri friends to see if they might want to sign up as well..and we may fly out for weekend of volunteering and fun.

For anyone else that might be following along and planning on 2010, perhaps my experience will be of help.  I decided to do online registration for 2009 IMAZ.  I sat at the computer from thirty minutes before until over two hours after they opened registration.  I tried and tried dozens of times to get through.  Finally, after over two hours, I completed the full registration and was confirmed for the race.  It was a long and stressful time. I didn't even dare take a break for the restroom unless my wife would take over at the keyboard.  Over and over again, I would get about half the process complete and then get a "Server busy, try again later" message.  It was a true test of endurance and perseverance.

Perhaps I was an exception, but, I believe many people had a similar experience.  So, yes it closed in a bit over five hours but, with a better server, I think it could have closed in under two. Be aware, there is no sure way to count on the online signup.  I also know of a friend who got tied up at work and got home just an hour after another IM race opened and she was shutout.

Unless you are willing to pay for a community slot as a fallback plan, volunteering is the way to go.  Just my experience.  Happy training everyone!

Good thing you had a good base.  Online registration - the fourth discipline.  Fifth - I dunno - nutrition is fourth, right?

I just can't help but think that being a flat fall race IMAZ is only going to increase in popularity.  People saw last year that the fall timing was MUCH better on the weather front than April.  You might get another year of online registration, but I really think very soon this will become a race that sells out onsite.

Sometimes I think it's worth the trip to sign up just for the peace of mind.  But then again, another poster had an interesting point.  By the time you pay for an airline ticket and hotels you could have bought a community fund slot and written it off on your taxes.

I'm going to sign up for IMFL this year by volunteering...but I only have to drive an hour to do that so it's totally worth it.

wow... Can't believe I just finished up the 3rd month of "base building" and I'm ready to pick up training levels..  I'm on a 9 month program that started back in February.. Maybe it's because I'm old that I am taking this long..  So far so good..  I've dropped 8 pounds and hope to NEVER pick them up again..  I am 6 pounds from my goal race weight of 135..  If I could see that weight again that would be wild...Last time I saw that was the summer I quit smoking at age 15, when I started at 110 pounds and discovered that 2 pound bags of M & M's were GREAT craving snuffers..By summer's end I was 132 pounds and have never looked back..  That was almost 35 years ago..

To think that I am on the verge of getting back to that weight as I stare 50 in the face, is amazing in itself..  Right now I am only 3 pounds from what I weighed when I was in the Police Academy 29 years ago.  The power of "TRI" is strong..

I certainly hope you all are hitting your goals and those just starting out, good luck.  I sure hope to be more involved in the blog as I get deeper and deeper into training..I'll need all the help I can get as I am "Going Where I Have Never Gone Before"..  Oh God, I just had a vision of William Shatner and boy does he look old!

Lori... "Trust me..  It's a paradise.. This is where the hungry come to feed..."
