skipg - 2009-03-09 8:13 PM Its been in the upper 70's around here for the past few days. Spring has finaly sprung. Nice to get some good rides outside!

No kidding.  I forgot the sunscreen, though.  Four hours of bright sunshine beating down on my back took it's toll.

Hey Bear - I heard from someone that was at the clinic too and it was my understanding that the bridge with carpet (Chef Mentur Hwy) has now been taken off the course?  The course now goes for about 5 miles or so on Hwy 11 near the original turnaround in order to take this bridge out completely?

FYI - they have revised bike and run maps now posted online.  Both the bike and run maps were slightly altered in order to have the routes completely closed to traffic during the race (at least that was my understanding).

Also, from the post above, that JW Marriott is an excellent hotel.  Just stayed there 2 weekends ago for a wedding shower.  Very nice and well worth the $490 for 4 nights.

I think the bridge with carpet is at the Lakefront Airport.  If I'm not mistaken, there is a draw bridge with metal grating.  They will lay carpet across the metal grating to make it safer for bikes to ride over.

I LOVE the run course.  This is going to be AWESOME.  The course takes the runners along the Lake, throught City Park, up Esplanade and finish in the French Quarter.  I think anyone who has not been to NOLA will be impressed with this run course.  It should be beautiful.

This will be my first HIM and only my second tri. I was wondering if I'll be able to listen to my ipod during the run. I know it's not permitted during the bike. Also, what are y'all doing about getting your stuff out of transition after the race? My husband wants to go get mine during the run, but according to the rules on the website, it doesn't sound like they're gonna let anybody but participants & volunteers in there. But since we have until 7, it really shouldn't be a problem for participants to retrieve their own equipment, right?

This will be my first HIM and only my second tri. I was wondering if I'll be able to listen to my ipod during the run. I know it's not permitted during the bike.

From the race website, Most Common Rule Violations . See No. 8.

BTW, what they've lined out here are the penalties, as they are different in the IM races than in USAT-sanctioned races. The unmarked document from the USAT is here.

The race website says 5pm, also says your husband won't be allowed in:

The transition area opens at 4:30am, and regardless of your wave, your equipment must be checked into transition by 6:30am. All bikes must be racked in the proper position between 2:00pm and 9:00pm Saturday evening. The racks provided will be individually numbered. Your equipment must be removed from transition by 5pm after the race. The event is not responsible for lost or stolen equipment.

Only participants and race staff and volunteers are allowed in transition. An event wristband is required for access.

One of our club members went to the "Hometown Advantage" clinic at the race site and posted his notes on our message board:

* Swim course is expected to be in the upper 60's or lower 70's
* The swim course follows a beach
* You can practice the swim with someone walking the course in
case you need help
* There is a group that swims in that area (not the actual course)
weekly (didn't get the date / time)
* There will be some people at the swim exit to help you strip
your swim suit if needed
* If the water is too rough, it will be replaced with a 4-5 mile run
* If the water is questionable you will have an option to skip the swim
* If you skip the swim you will wait in the transition area until
the last swimmer exits the water, then you can do the bike and run
legs (will not qualify for awards)
* The bike route will have 3 "Bottle Exchanges" at 15, 30 and 45 Miles.
* The first (and only bridge I believe) will be covered with carpet
* You can throw away a bottle there and pickup Gatorade bottle with water
* I believe there will be power bars and gels their as well
* A few yards after that will be bottles of Gatorade you can pickup
* The bottles will be pre-opened so you don't have to fight with that
* There will be portable bathrooms at the bottle swaps (with bike racks)
* All roads will have at least 2 lanes closed for the race with
some local traffic allowed on the outside lanes in some areas
* The run will have a water station every 1.5 miles
* Every other water station will also have power bars and gels
* The 8 hour cut off for the race starts after the last swim wave starts
* You will have at least until 7 PM to remove your bike. The 5 PM
time printed was wrong
* There is a lot of free parking right at the transition area
* The city of New Orleans was very cooperative about shutting down
roads for the event

The 5 PM time printed was wrong...

10 mi run today. Its starting to get warmer outside, I normaly only bring 2 bottles on my fuelbelt for this run but with the heat rising I ran out of water with a little over 2mi to go. Felt like I would never make it home. Guess I need to bring a little extra water from now on!

I agree, I also ran 10 miles today. Ran out of water and thought I would not finish the workout for a second.

I did 8 on Sun. Put water out every 1 &1/2 - 2 miles with a Gu @ mile 3 which I ate on the way back in. I felt pretty good. 9 mile beach run scheduled for Sunday. I won't be able to space out water, so I guess I'll have to stick to a 2 mile loop. Haven't invested in a fuel belt or hydration system yet. Sunday might not be too bad, though. It's supposed to cool off a little and there will be a breeze off the water. Good race prep, though, with the warmer weather. I'd rather get used to it now than have cool temps all the way to April & then get smacked with an 80 degree plus high for the day of the race.

Anybody been able to get any open water swimming practice in yet?  My wetsuit came in last week, and I tried to go out.  Felt good but the water couldn't have been over 55 degrees, so my hands and feet felt like ice.  Didn't stay in very long or get much swimming in.

It was my first time in a wetsuit, and it definitely felt odd.

I'm not gonna get the chance to ows before this race. I got my wetsuit in January and it hung in my closet for a few weeks until the heater broke at the pool where I work out, which is outdoors. It was gonna be out all week so it was a good chance to get accustomed to the suit. In fact, I've worn it for all my workouts since. The pool temp is about 80 degrees with the heater on so it's very comfortable. Also I'm getting a good idea how wearing it affects my pace. Btw, with water temps iin the 50's, I bet your hands, feet , & face were numb afterwards.

I have to say, it was a really strange feeling going from having my hands, face, and feet feeling like ice to getting out of the water into 80 degree air temps.

No...I always seem to do well in lake swims so I hardly ever practice for em.

Same here.  I love the open water, but I really gotta get used to this wetsuit.

Had a very scary start for last Saturday's brick..

Started off early 6:30 am for my 30 mile bike ride and not maybe 1/2 mile into it almost got hit by a drunk driver.... saw my life flash before me...  We can be as  visible as we can but this jerk was either drunk or sleep or both.. Just glad I'm still here

After that wakeup call...continued on my 30 miler, hopped off and practiced my transition and went right into my 8 mile run.  Felt good...legs were a bit sore afterwards but to be expected.  I tried to take advantage of the good weather as much as possible.  Stretched and then enjoyed the afternoon with the family, thank God I'm still here....enough of that

I'm excited cant wait to see you all there... I've never been to NO and I hear its as wonderful as you all say..

With the plan I'm following, this is the last week of longer hours. I always feel like I could have or should have trained more...longer. Hopefuly I've done enough to get the results I want...

How bout the rest of you?

I'm feeling really good right now.  My hours start dropping this week, but I may add another tempo run and bike, and then go with a 2 week taper.  I just hope the swim doesn't get cancelled for whatever reason.

Normal life has been throwing some crazy hours at me, so my training has really gone haywire the last two weeks.  I've gotten most of it in, though I missed every swim last week.  However, as swimming is what I do best, it doesn't have me that worried.  Definitely gonna try to get back to a more structured routine this week, and then head on into taper.

Last week of long hours, then two weeks of taper. I feel good but also feel like I could have done more. Just hoping I did enough to get the results. I am so ready for it to get here.

For me I've done as much as I can with what time and weather I was dealt.  I think I made the best of it all and I'm convinced that I should be ok.  I'm like you all-I just want it to get here.  What would you all reccommend would be a good 2 week taper?

I feel like I've trained enough to survive. That's really all I'm after this time. Well, that and not having to get an IV in the back of an ambulance during or after the race. Anybody have that feeling of dread/eager anticipation at the same time? I'm there.
