OK, here's a random comment.  My pool was so cold this evening that I left with 1000m to go because my lips were BLUE and I couldn't feel my fingers.  Anybody else have this problem?  (I swim at two different pools.  The other one is too warm.  Why can't they get the temp exactly as I want it? Wink )

Hee. They are just trying to torture you.

The first time my daughter did an OWS, the water temps were 56 degrees, and she was so unprepared, she wasn't even wearing a thermal cap. It took her two hours to warm up again.

On the serious note, you might want to think about talking to the pool director about the temps.

I have no ironman to count down to... but 112 days until my half marathon!!

You know, if we don't pick it up in here I'm going to have to start one of my topics of controversy.  For example, I am a heel striker, do we think that Newtons really would help correct this?

So, you'll pardon me but I jsut have WAY too much energy today - early morning spins tend to do that to me :-)  But, we have SO much snow here - it's crazy.  I am beginning to see the value in a snow blower.  Usually we just shovel, but it seems like everyone around us has a blower, but no one likes to share, lol.

112 days to Half Ironman...all right!! You too, can dream of summer and sunny rides with the warm wind on the face...nothing better

Um, re the snowblower...are you trying to tell me that there isn't some form of bribery(cookies?? with choc chips??!BEER??) that would work on those snow-blower endowed neighbours?

Ah, Freud would be amused by the things we actually DO envy...now there is a topic....

Oh, hey....we hit page 5!!

I love running barefoot!  I normally run barefoot once per week.

But Samantha, don't geet my started on forefoot striking and Newtons and such.  Wink  Things could get ugly then.

Brian, yes I think I'lkl have a chat with the pool director about the temp.  It is a University pool and the students aren't back yet, so maybe they are saving energy.  I guess I'll find out.  But maye I'm jst a wimp, because it definitely wasn't as cold as 54 degrees!

Samantha: I have modified my challenge as an add-on to the on you proposed...for the next 24 days I WILL do 30 min easy spinning on the bike trainer in the basement...no excuses. After this I will do 10 min on the rowing machine...other workouts are extra. This is a commitment(since I seem to be having issues getting the butt onto the bike!!)

Brian: did I guess right that IMAZ is Arizona? Alright!!....I will be going onto google tonight to check it out ... AND.. I was doing the math as far as your daughter getting ready for Ironman and high school swimming...do they have a min. age for Ironman? I think IMC is age 18. Interesting....

Micheal: you are doing really well on the training...I gotta get going. Wow...good job!

All you folks are helping to motivate me I thank you for that !

Ann

BRIAN:added at 2156...went onto Ironman Arizona site...excellent race! Great time in 2008, too!

Good job Ann - I have surmised that I am addicted to Spin classes and they are like crack for me :-)

Brian - Yes, first half-marathon ever!  It's going to be the longest distance I've ever run up to that point (unless I cover more in training obviously). Definitely longest competitive distance to-date, it's a year of records for me :-)

Michael - I promise to keep topics of controversy to myself... but I was considering one for COJ: Why are Dogs better pets than Cats?  hahaha  THough, I have to admit, the Newton advertising has me curious.  And Hillary Biscay wear them - though her running form is crazy weird!

And with that, I must finish my breakfast and get ready for my run-fun today.  My friend Jon (who doubles as my run coach) is picking me up to torture me - eh - help me with my running hahaha

I didn't realize that. How exciting for you! My first half mary was in Aug 2007, and I was a nervous wreck for two weeks before hand.

IMAZ is Arizona in November. The minimum age for the M-Dot Ironman Races is 18. She will have aged up in August. We'll see how it goes for her. I'm a little worried that she won't have time to train and be a freshman in college since she has to get up to 15-20 hours per week in September and October.

Good Monday Morning Triathletes!!!

I started my morning with a Cardio class (the one that I stumbled into last week by accident) since my Fundamentals for Endurance Athletes was delayed yet another week.  It was fun - but too many lunges!!!

    Hey Brian,

Question - Since I have my half-mary coming up in 110 days where should I be in my mileage?  Should I be running more than 13 miles prior to the event?  Currently, a 5 K is my standard distance.  I am doing an 8K in March, should I concentrate on that distance and work on going from there to the 13.1 miles in April?  I'm not sure of my best course of action...

OR is it jus as simple as adding 1 mile/week to my long runs?

OMG, don't I know it! (I really, really hate lunges - so that must mean they are good for me, lol.

I am a morning person anyway but a 4:50 AM alarm clock is still really not my friend.  So, when I start mentally whining and listing my reasons of how I can rearrange my whole set week schedule just to stay in the warm bed, I merely think of 4 letters I learned on this site: H T F U  Laughing

I figure I'll thank myself later, haha!

    Samantha,
There are a couple of general guidelines.

Never increase your total mileage by more than 10% per week. If you ran 10 miles TOTAL last week, don't run more than 11 miles this week. Increasing more than 10% per week can lead up to injuries.

You should start seriously training for the half-mary about 12 weeks out.

The max distance that you need, as a beginner is 10 miles. This is your long slow distance run. You want to do this at a very easy pace, 60-90 seconds/mile slower than your expected half-marathon pace.

Every 3 weeks, take a rest week.

It sounds like March would be a great time to do an 8-k, as part of your training plan.

Personnaly, I've found Hal Higdon's training site to be excellent for getting a good training plan. I used his site for my first marathon. This is a link to his Free Beginner Half Marathon training plan - http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm. If that seems too easy, he has an intermediate plan @ http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/inter.htm. A plan is always a good thing, because it just removes one more thing to worry about.

I've had friends who said that they didn't get warm @ IM California until about 40 miles into the bike. That's supposed to be a pretty cold course.

Hal Higdon has gotten loads of people through their first 1/2M and first M.  The plans work.  They won't make you super quick, but presumably that's not the point on your first ones.

One quick addendum to the 10% rule (which I endorse -- every time I violate it significantly I'm sorry... Embarassed):  You can increase your long run by up to 20%, so long as your TOTAL distance for the week is increased no more than 10%.  And don't increase every week.  Let the new distance 'settle in' sometimes.

OK, now I have to say this:  I swam 2000m straight today!  Yeeha!  This makes me extremely excited, and not nearly so nervous about my 1/2IM next May.  Previous longest distance swum as 1200yd, so that was quite a jump for me.  (I'm still nervous about the IM in August, but one thing at a time...)

    Ann,
Really, if anything, she's the one who inspired me to start training. The first training ride I did with her, back in April 2007, I couldn't finish a 12 mile bike ride.

Both of my daughters have always been athletic, and they were lucky enough to discover that they loved swimming at an early age. My eldest was swimming year round since she was about 12, and my youngest has been swimming year round since she was 9.

Really, we discovered that Evelyn was going to be interested in Triathlons when she signed up for the Cross Country team in HS, in addition to her swimming.

If anything, I would say to just be an example to them, and don't push them into something they don't want to do. I like the age limits on races, which give parents pretty good guidelines about when kids are going to be ready for a particular distance.

See if he likes sprint triathlons. I would also recommend a summer competitive swim team at the least. Most of the kids that I've seen do well at triathlons are coming from a swim background, although I've seen some kids with a track background.

2000m is an amazing accomplishment!! Really, it gets much easier after that. Now you just have to deal with the sheer boredome of getting it up to 4-5k before the IM Keep on swimming keep on swimming
