Can I just say that you guys rock! I am sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket in front of the fireplace with -20C (-5F) temps outside and just enjoying all of the posts. All this positive energy is so awesome! My fingers and toes are uncrossed and I am thrilled to be a part of of the GPOL group...reminds me of a great shirt my sister bought me - "I don't chase boys, I pass them" (the exception for me of course is in the pool)

Temps in Calgary are looking like they are finally warming up; today was the warmest (-16C) we have been in over a week! Though I did manage to layer up and throw some booties on the dog to get out for an easy run. I love it when the snow crunches under your feet! (And yes- my dog wears boots...his poor paws get too cold otherwise).

Thanks for the tip on the GU sale! Loving the chocolate mint...and lemon-lime is a new fave too. Unfortunately, sometimes the logistics of shipping to Canada aren't always great but I try to make a point of stocking up if I am in the US for a visit or else it works well that my sister becomes my US mailing address.

Always up for a challenge! I am also a big believer in core stability. When you are reaching for every last ounce at the end of a race...you'd be surprised at how much you will rely on your core to help you keep your form and keep it together. A friend of mine was lucky enough to have a week at the Athlete Performance Institute in AZ and it made us both fans of the ways of Mark Verstegen. A link to some articles and exercises: http://www.coreperformance.com/movement/article/

Anyhoooo I think the hubby wants to challenge me in MarioKart...not really much of a challenge though- I don't know which is worse my swimming or my MarioKart-ing?!

I bought my bike on craigslist. I did not know much other than how tall I am and how tall he was. The frame is a bit big for me but usable and super cheap.

Maybe go to a local bike shop (LBS) get fitted, then you will know what size bike to look for. I have found them to be very helpful.

I second Amy on using your local bike shop- they can give you tons of info about sizing, accessories, and composition.

If you want an estimate of your frame size....this website gives some info about sizing: http://www.coloradocyclist.com/bikefit/#properframesize

Happy bike shopping!

I also agree if you can at least go to a bike shop and get fitted would be best, I have had friends just buy what the liked visually and ended up with back, wrist or knee issues.

I have a Fuji carbon 48cm, I'm 5'3.5" and have a med bone frame. I also like the bike shop I bought from because they are always there to correct a problem or give me advice, they also offer regular riding groups to join in on.

I think the bike was my biggest purchase, and then my wetsuit, which if anyone is thinking of getting one, my Blue seventy is terrific.

i bought my bike on www.bikesdirect.com
there weren't any HUGE names on there, but the prices were great, and when i got my bike and it had a bent deraileur hanger on it (how the HECK do you spell that crazy word?) they sent me out a new one overnight, and didn't charge me. i'd definately recommend them for a first time purchase.

i have my glass of wine (ahhhhhhhhhh) and all my kids are in bed and quiet! (the earliest it's been all week! yahoo)

Kurls26 - 2008-12-23 8:20 PM okay I know Julie said I don't need to go out and purchase a bike right away, but I've been stalking Ebay and Craigslist and have found some accessories and equipment I will eventually need at a very reasonable price.  Ex: a woman is selling her CycleOps Fluid2 for $200 and Im sure I could talk her down....There are a few bikes on Craigslist, but I have NO IDEA where to begin. What type of frame. aluminum, carbon fiber?!! Im assuming cm is the height of the frame?! I need a triathlon dictionary!!  Newbie here..its okay to laughLaughing  Any input would be great!!

look at the one I have on ebay....it is ending tomorrow...search for a fuji newest and then look for my user name...julee650... it just may fit you...only $450...it is a 50 cm. was a males bike but small male! I fit on it fine and I am 5'6"-5'7".

Any space left? I'm no longer a beginner but I still have a lot to learn. Running is my limiter. I've never run beyond 4.4 miles but I'm planning on doing my first Oly distance tri this summer. I can use all the help I can get with getting my running up for the challenge.

Kurls26 - 2008-12-24 10:11 AM okay just a quick question...Ive been scouting out some Sprint Triathlons that are in the MA area. A few of them are already sold out! Like I mentioned before I want to make sure I am ready and confident in all parts of the race, the three races that I would consider are July 19th, July 26th, and August 26th. I think I would be ready for a July race.  I think the Aug 26th would be to late in the year for my BF to be able to watch ( and I REALLY want him there). SO should I sign up before it is too late?  Or am I just jumping the gun?

I think you should go for it! Tons of support from this group and you are sounding super motivated...knowing that the BF is there will also be a good motivator...any chance he might sign up too?!

sign! It is totally within reach if you follow a plan. The 20 weeks plan available here did the trick for me and,as i mentioned in my intro,i am not an athlete.

first cardio challenge:clicking on the "sending entry" button , go girl!!!
