smoore3 - 2009-04-13 7:24 PM Hey Trevor - having two flat tires  did really put a damper on my first Tri - I plan on learning how to change my own tire for the next one!  Im relatively new to Calgary so I have just been training on my own.  Yourself?

Yes I am on my own as well. My wife comes out running every once in awhile. BUt i tend to swim and bike on my own. We also have a couple young ones that makes it challenging as well.  You're new to town? Where you from? Are you a downtowner?
We are going to run this weekend out in Airdrie, they have a 5k/10k/21k thing going on.

Yes I seen that there was a run in Airdrie but dont think Im that ambitious.  I did the 5k in the Spring trio this past weekend.  Im from the maritimes (PEI).  I live about halfway down in the south of the city.

Alright, starting to think about swimming - it is my biggest weakness, mentally and physically.  I got an email today from TI, 500 bones is a lot to drop for a weekend swim class -  but I will need to swim 1500m for the olymic distance I am planning on doing at the end of the summer.  For those of you in the know, is it better to go to TI or to spend the money on some one-on-one swim coaching?  It seems that $500 should get one about 16 or so private 1/2 hour or so lessons.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

 Andy

Hi Andy

I took a TI workshop last summer.  For me, it was not worth it.  I was too new to swimming (like I couldn't swim 25 yards) and the intense two days of drills are progressive.  If you get behind doing something like the Underswitch, the Double/Triple Underswitch is out of reach.  I would have been better off working with a swim coach one on one.  I tried to look at your logs to see how much swimming you have done so far, but apparently you are not using them? or they are not viewable by the group?  If you haven't done so, check out their site including the free videos.  You can practice some of the drills on your own before making the call.

I know Kim also took the two day workshop and had a good experience.  She swims like a fish now so something clicked! Kim?

Suzy,

While I was churning away in the pool this am I was thinking.

How many pairs of running shoes did you go through last year?

Yes, these are the things I think of to keep my mind from shutting down while swimming.

What an interesting thing to ponder!  I usually put about 250m per pair so at least 10, maybe more.  I rotate between Adrenline 6s, 8s and now 9s so always have two to three going at a time.  I date them all so I know exactly how many miles they have on them. Probably more than you needed to know (LOL!)

I went to the highschool pool to be underwater videotaped today.  Great pool, my first 25m experience and the first time I have been in cholorine in over a year.    I won't actually see the results of the taping until next week, but one obvious to the coach is I need to get my little legs up higher in the water.  I am back to the kick board under my chest.  One step forward, two steps back .

allow me take a page out of Steve's book..." ATTENTION NEW MEMBERS THIS GROUP IS ALSO A BRAG SESSION. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY PB'S OR GOOD STUFF LIKE THAT SHARE WITH THE GROUP."  (wheeww...its hard typing in caps.)

allow me to provide an example....I signed up yesterday for a 10k happening this Sunday. WTF?? 5 months ago when I did my first ever 5k I couldn't believe it at the time. I'm going to run 5k?? Now I'm signing up for 10k's on a whim....And if I break 1hr on this 10k, boys you guys are going to hear about it!! My wife will be doing the 5k.  I am so proud of myself. I am really started to surprise myself with how far I've come in the last year and a half. WOW I was a fat lazy unmotivated guy !!
My 2009 goals were originally to do 5 tri's this year( sprints) and maybe think about an Oly at the end of the year or next year. By June 7th I'll have 4 sprints in the bag with my 1st OWS done. I will be doing Oly's this year for sure.
The accountability that this group provides is great. The logging workouts on the site is something that is so motivating. The fact that I can go in see that in 2009 I've ran and bike about 700km so far. Man thats cool!!!

Oh, and its snowing in Calgary right now! blahhhhh!!

I'm right with you Trevor.  When I started running (I checked last night and it was right at Halloween) a 1/2 mile seemed like a dream.  I'm three weeks out from a half-marathon and can't wait to hit the line running.

Did 30 minutes on the trainer in the garage last night.  My first time ever on a trainer.  Fortunately my neighbor had warned me to cover my top tube with a towel to keep the bike pretty.
That 30 minutes drove home the biggest lesson I've learned in my running.  Your head is your biggest enemy - and friend.  While one part was saying "stop, this is stupid" another, now more powerful part, was saying "hell no, ride on, it's only 30 minutes."
A good "King of the Hill" was on as well which helps.

And does anyone know the format for importing a spreadsheet into the logs. I would like to put all my running for 2009 in the logs, but without the hassle of a web interface.
Thanks

btw, Roni, it looks like we are doing the same plan, but you are a bit further along since Boise is in June.  How is it going?  Are you able to get those LOOOOng rides and runs in?  I'm trying my best.  Good luck!  Very exciting...and congrats on your marathon

Sorry it's taken me awhile to get back. It's been a busy long weekend... and not in a good way. But, now I'm back and ready to get back to the training, and caught up on BT.

Cool that we're doing the same plan. I really like it, and feel like it will have me well prepared for my HIM. I was actually doing the 20 week marathon plan for the run portion up until my marathon and that worked out really well also. The looong rides... these have been the hardest to get in. I actually did a 4 hour trainer ride last month... dreadful, but it was great mental training and I was really proud that I got it done I have missed a few here and there, but, like you, I try my best to get them in. Should be a bit easier now that the weather is getting nicer!

Guys great news all the way around from everyone.  Workouts get easier (in a devilish sort of way as you push yourself further)!  You will see throughout the year.  Once the weather gets better (for most of us) you will actually enjoy getting out more.

Attached below is a picture of the STRIPPED down bike for those asking yesterday...

150 miles if i'm lucky!  I always thought it was because I'm a fat slob but a guy down at Fleet Feet told me he's got a 125 pounder that gets the same.  Asics 21xx forever.  I've tried others and nothing else works.

My first tri two sundays ago is the hightlight of my "athletic" career over the past 6 years.  But I ran my first 10k in a long time (can't remember right now when the last one was) a few weeks ago, PB 49:26.

If I'm running that then Trevor, you should be coming in somewhere around 32:15...maybe 32:22 if you hoist to many the night before!

I am having issues with a big change of plans for the weekend.  I was supposed to do my first tri this weekend and I guess I am going to table it due to the uncertainty of this frigging economy.  I am self employed in the building industry and the last 3 months have sucked, and I don't see it getting that much better in the near future.  I guess I am feeling selfish taking a weekend trip to race not knowing what is coming the next few months.

I have always said that when your OUTFLOW is more than your INFLOW, then you have problems with your CASHFLOW! It seems like a small thing, in that the race is paid for and I would be able to stay with one of my friends near the event, but I guess everything counts until the cashflow gets going the correct way again.  It is a hard thing to do, but I have been preaching about battening down the hatches to my wife, and I guess I must lead the way.  Anyway it is disappointing after looking forward to this for several months and working hard toward it, but the uncertainty ahead has me guarded.

On the brighter side of things...I will replace this one with another local race or two.  I was really enjoying this taper week, but what the hell...TRAINING ON!

We've heard about about those "computers" you have down there.  The hardest part of being a part of this group, is every time I have to send a response, I have to use my typewriter, and then put it in the mail. Its hard to get timely responses from me.

Hey John -- sorry about the PC.  I think maybe keeping some Bounty close to your pc might be a good idea. Lots of zingers fly back every day!

Oh Barry, I am really sorry to hear the news, but totally understand it as a SBO myself.  I hope your wife realizes you are sacrificing too.  Why not make Saturday your own triathlon? hit the pool, get on the bike and jump off for the run.  Of course, we want truthful details about the experience, including the transitions!

Hey Trevor--do you have party line phones up there too?

Lastly, if anyone is interested here is a recent interview with Friel.  I have yet to listen to it, but will do so tonight.

BBBOOOOO!!! Barry no.....How far away is it? How much could it cost to go do it? You've already spent the $100 or so to enter. If I was you(and of course I'm not), I would still go. If you've got a place to crash, you need what gas money? Or a cheap plane ticket? You're right next to Florida aren't you?
You are a bigger man than I....If this was my 1st Tri and I had been training so long and hard to to, there is no way i would miss it. Especially because of the economy!! We all still have to live.  DO it Barry!! Do It!!!

Hey gang,
I'm new to the group and excited as it sounds this is a great group of poeple.

I am starting my 2nd year at triathlons.  And, I'm having a little trouble.
OK, I'm not ususlly a whiner, but here goes.  I have a 1/2 in 3 1/2 weeks and I am slow on the training.
I'm just not getting the workouts in for various reasons.  I signed up for this race since it is basically the same course as my "A" race in November.  And I can't seem to get motivated.  However, I know if I don't hunker down I'm going to be disappointed with myself once the race is done.

Anyone have any words of wisdom?  Or, you can tell me to just HTFU!
Thanks
