Show up Friday if you can. Much better doing race briefing and packet p/u. Sat is just a zoo.

Agree with Cube. Come in fri. I would consider going home that night if only 5 1/2 hrs. Not much going on after the awards are over. Ive got a 10 hr drive so Ill leave mon. Im not sure but I think north Augusta is SC. Any of the hotels off I 20 are pretty close to downtown. I had no trouble getting in and out from the LaQuinta last year. Wont use that place again it was a dump but plenty of hotels in the area. Im sure you could priceline pretty cheap. Thats my plan.

I Learned two years ago about the fri arrival. Much more relaxed doing briefing and packet p/u, then on sat when everyone is running around crazy, you can relax and just drop the bike, cruise the expo, eat eairly and get to bed.
We have the room booked at the Marriott for fri, sat, and sun night...very relaxing weekend.
looking forward to it.

A few of us are meeting this Saturday at the boathouse at 7:00 AM to ride the course at an easy pace and then a run afterwards. This is going to be a really easy pace (16 - 17 MPH) to familiarize some others with the course.

bdroppleman - 2010-05-28 8:45 AM I'm not sure about his background, but I see him several times/week at the local Y working out. In office, he's been a coalition builder who's surprisingly competent (surprisingly--Aug is known for choosing incompetent politicians). He was quoted in a local mag saying he liked to work out at the Y because it gave him a chance to get input from lots of different types of people. He takes all the interruptions to his workouts in stride. A nice guy!

kdlsch111 - 2010-05-22 4:20 PM I just saw where the mayor of Augusta will be participating in the event. I thought that was pretty cool. Does he have any kind of tri background? The website said he was being trained by Team in Training starting in May.

I rode the HIM course with a group this weekend that included the Mayor's Executive Assistant, she is also doing the HIM. She told me that the mayor, Deke Copenhaver, has a strong background as a runner, but this will be his first tri experience.  They are both involved with the Team In Training here in Augusta.  You can read a little more here.

This is going to be a fantastic event this year, the buzz has already started around town; and we are seeing lots of athletes coming in on weekends to ride the course and practice the swim.  We have a new Tri Club forming for organized workouts, should be a good year.

hpeterson10579 - 2010-07-15 9:17 PM Is wind an issue in Augusta on the bike?

We don't have consistent winds here, so it really depends on the weather that day.  The good thing about this course is that it is a large-area counterclockwise loop with lots of turns....so if there is a wind on race day, it won't be consistent....you could have tailwinds part of the time.....as well as headwinds.  Unless you ride near me, in which case the wind always seems to change direction everytime I make a turn so I ALWAYS seem to have a headwind. ;-)

Last year, as I recall there was a nice northwesterly tail wind for the early part of the race so everyone had a great first 16 miles until we made the turn, but we didn't really hit a headwind until about mile 30 when we headed northwest.  All in all, the wind wasn't a problem.

If you're asking for wheel selection reasons, I saw a lot of full disk and deep rim wheels and no one seemed to have a problem with the wind.  But of course, it all really depends on the weather that day.

We have already started seeing groups coming in to test-ride the course on weekends, so you should have company any weekend morning.  There are always groups starting up around 7 or so on weekends, even groups getting together to swim the course.  You can check with the TriAugusta fan page on FaceBook to see if anyone posts any specific gatherings.

Not this saturday, but I'm going to come up either August 21st or 22nd and hope to ride the bike course.  Anyone interested in working out that weekend please PM me.

A little nervous to just jump in the river and swim, but if there was a group that would look after each other or if we could get someone to kayak along that would be good (more worried about getting hit by a boat than drowning).

Also probably will walk the jog one loop of the run course just to get familiar with landmarks, etc.

Speaking of the swim... what is everyones thoughts on wetsuits for this event?  A buddy did it last year and said he felt fine without it, but he felt like "Where's Waldo" because almost everyone else had one.  I don't own one, and have very little use for one so if I bought one, it would be for this race and maybe a Ironman next year (but if I try to do an Full IM it will probably be IMFLA or IMCOZ, where, again, I don't think I'd need one for the temps, just want one for the extra boyancy.  The other sprints/oly's etc that I do here around Jacksonville are all too warm for them to be legal.

Would you buy one anyway?  Rent?

Thanks,

EW
