jmk-brooklyn - 2010-04-15 12:10 PM Yeah, gel always means the full serving. I can’t imagine trying to eat half, putting it away somewhere and finishing it late

Oh!  I gotcha!  I was thinking gel = shot block type stuff but they mean Gu type stuff!  Embarassed

So question to the group, what is the minimum distance/time training ride you bring nutrition with you and how much do you bring?

For me, any run over 10 miles I have some sort of drink(either on me or stashed along the route) and some jelly beans. I can't stand gu. Biking is still a work in progress on the nutrition front.

I will say that my nutrition makes a big difference for me. My best runs are the ones that I really on top of my nutrition, but sometimes I am just too lazy to really bother especially if its just a training run.

MartyO - 2010-04-14 1:54 PM I had a great run this morning. Love it when that happens!

My biking is on hold for a bit - I bought a new bike! Yeah!!! It just arrived at the bike store and I sold my old bike yesterday, so I am without wheels for a bit.
A new bike? So? Details!

I bought a Specialized Ruby. I can't wait to take it for a ride. It was so comfortable and smooth when I tried it out!

It's a road bike - i just wasn't willing to make the plunge for a tri bike. My husband rides ALOT is is always after me to join him if I can line up a sitter or the grandparents are here. So I figured a road bike would best suit the majority of my needs right now. However, I know a friend of mine is looking to unload her tri bike - if I can get her to keep it for another year maybe I can swing that thenWink

With our first race on Sunday (8am!!) I'm pretty sure the advice is to have a normal breakfast (around 5/6ish?), but what is best the day/night before?

If I'm going to be out for more than about 90 minutes, I'll bring some calories with me. When I run, I'll wear my amphipod fuel belt with some sports drink in it. On the bike, I'll bring some low-cal sports drink (like G2) and a couple of gels in a bento box.

Depends what "normal" is. I think most people have some variation of a bagel and peanut butter or toast & jelly or something like that.

The night before, I usually have pasta, but I don't "carbo load". Here's my favorite pre-race recipe that I always try to have if I'm home or somewhere where I can cook:

(amounts are per serving)
Whole wheat pasta (spaghetti, usually)
Turkey bacon, chopped (2 slices)
Olive oil (about 1 tbsp)
Parmesan (Tsp)
Minced garlic (tsp)
parsley, finely minced (tbsp)

Saute the bacon in a pan, then remove and set aside. Sautee the garlic and the oil in the same pan until the edges of the garlic start to brown. Remove from heat, strain out garlic.
Combine the bacon and the garlicky/baconny olive oil and pour over the cooked pasta. Throw in the parsley and the parmesan and toss to coat before serving.

Beautiful bike. A road bike is the right choice if you're only going to have one bike. I love my tri bike, but it's my only bike and I often wish I had a road bike. Congratulations. Ride the he!! out of it!

Have a great race!

For me, it's usually pizza or pasta the day before (a normal amount).   Lately, I've been leaning towards pizza.

The morning of the event, I have one of my usual breakfasts -- English Muffin with PB and a banana.  (my other usual breakfast is cereal and a piece of fruit)

Welcome to the group!  My pool does not have time constraints per se but it has busy times when it's hard to get a lane, etc.  I end up getting up very early to get to the pool before the rush.  That works reasonably well except for having to go to bed so darn early Undecided  I think that everyone has a bit of a juggling act going to fit in training around work and family and social commitments.   I'm glad that you found a new pool!

Good luck on Sunday and have fun!

Right calf is fairly sore (cramped up about 4miles into the ride going up hill!) but other than that I feel great!

Next race for us is the Mazda London Sprint in August.

Which leads to a question. The next race is 16 weeks away, is it better to do the 16 week sprint plan again starting at a harder effort or go on to a 16 week Oly plan at my current level?

Great job, both of you (Stav’s mother’s opinion notwithstanding… )! My response is that you did better than everyone else who spent the day on the couch instead.

Can’t wait to read the race reports. Congratulations, triathletes!

So the next question is…..when’s the next one?

My weekend turned into kind of a washout. I was hoping to go for a long bike ride out in Long Island where I was visiting a friend. Unfortunately, the forecast was for rain and wind and temps in the low 50’s, and I didn’t feel like subjecting myself to that. As it turned out, it was even colder than that where we were, and so I decided not to run, either. I’ve had lots of injury problems with my legs, and running in the cold never feels like a good idea for me. Oh well, I’ll jump back in the saddle today.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Glad to see that Stavros and Adam had a successful weekend!  I had no doubts but I'm happy to see their reports!

I had a nice weekend with a whole lotta riding.  The weather cooperated with two beautiful spring days.

I started to do some research on tri bikes and I'm weighing my options.  I don't expect to make decision for a few months but I'm gathering information and giving it some though.  I guess the big question is whether or not I'll ride a tri bike enough or will I end up on my road bike all the time anyway?  Also just understanding the pros and cons of various setups -- components, wheelsets, oh my!

Ack!  I'm sorry that the nice spring weather did not extend up to Long Island!  It could have been worse though, you could be trapped in an airport in Europe...  I hope that you're able to get out on your bike more this week!

My Dad was actually stuck in France. He got home today, but he had to take a bus from Paris to Toulouse and then stand around in the airport until he finally got on a flight. It was about 30 hours altogether until he got home. Not as bad as some, for sure, but no picnic.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: ...I can definitely help you get faster if you’re slow, and I can probably help you get faster even if you’re already fast.

I think it might be time to put this to the test! With 16 weeks to go til my next race (7th August) I was wondering what's the best way to go about improving my times?

I know what I need to do to improve my swimming, but with the cycling and running would I be better off continuing to increase the mileage or drop back down and build it up again at a faster starting pace?

jmk-brooklyn - 2010-04-08 5:52 PM
My wife and son and I are in the pre-pre-pre planning stages of a visit to London for the Olympics in 2012. Is it presumptuous of me to ask if we can sleep in your living room? Probably. Ok, never mind...

Let's see how my second race goes and maybe we can discuss this Wink

I too am interested in knowing what to do plan-wise after I finish my first race.  My race is May 9, and I don't have another one planned yet, but I was hoping to do another in July if I like it.  I want to stay at the sprint distance this year.  Do I redo the last few weeks of my 16 week plan in between, or go to the oly plan?  Wing it?
