Question regarding the swim distances in the custom training plans.  When it gives a distance, am I suppose to jump in the pool and swim that distance or is it a combination of drills/ladders that build up to longer continuous swims.

My workout today was a short sprinting workout on the trainer.  Short but tough.  Was hoping to get a run and swim in tomorrow morning before catching a flight to Atlanta but with snow coming tonight I'm hoping for just one of the two.

Hope everyone has a good holiday weekend and I will be back in four days, with more questions I'm sure.

are you using a free plan or one of the high memberships? I think the free plans might just be time/distance, and the higher levels actually have workouts with them.

The one I am currently working with only gives time and distance.

Edit:  Just looked at some of the other Oly plans and never scrolled down to see that they give a general structure to how the workouts should go.

Ok just went and checked it out, the custom plan builder is a minutes only, no detailed workouts.

It looked like you have one of two options if you want to go with the BT plans (vs another route).
If you do want to use them you either use the custom one and fill in the workout specifics yourself, and it does the up and down with volume for you, or you find another pre-built one. At the silver level membership there should be some decent ones with full details if that's a route you;d like to go

That's weird before they changed the membership levels I was able to generate detailed plans as a silver member. I was actually debating between a custom plan or the HIM plan available for free I would still stay bronze or silver as i like the extra features but i am starting to lean torwards buying the gold membership to custom create a plan. I think the custom ones have you completing each distance at least once in each discipline, which i think will be important for my confidence level going into my first HIM. The details i saw were pretty good as well, similar to the level of details in the silver level maintenance plan i am using right now, which to be honest i felt I was getting some good fitness gains from until I caught pneumonia last week.Hopefully the details will be back for the Gold members, i am fairly certain i would upgrade for what i was seeing during the beta testing. Looked solid to me.

I use look keo's. seem to work well. I do have some problems still getting by cleats into and (sometimes more importantly..) out of them.  They are almost a year old now...

I'm familiar with the climbing machine and don't have one available. I'm seriously considering a Concept 2 rowing machine, and I've been incorporating push-ups recently after a long break following a shoulder injury. (Not having a pool sucks because my injured shoulder always feels better after I've been swimming regularly). The other exercises I'll see what I can do about, but when I say that the new town is limited on resources, I don't think I can over-state how limited it is. There is literally ONE traffic light, and it's one of those that just has a blinking redlight, no green or yellow. If I didn't already have the absolutely best paying job in the region, there's no way in heck I would live here.

worn out ones can be harder.

FWIW, i always thought thelooks were hard to get out of. If you like that style of pedal, you may want to look at the shimano 105 or ultegra pedals, same style but much more user friendly i thought.

the erg (rowing machine), while a good workout, overall wont do a ton for your swimming. I spent YEARS on one, still makes me shudder. They are mainly a lower body/back workout, with the upper body as just the follow through/end of the stroke.

Thanks for all the tips on pedals.  I'm in Canada, so sadly, I can't take advantage of a lot of the online options.  I think I'm going to take a look at the Shimano ones.  Does anyone know if the 105s have adjustable tension on them?

We have a Concept 2 erg at home and my husband loves it!  I don't use it due to a history of back problems -- coach feels that it's too risky.

RBesecke - 2010-12-23 4:04 PM  Does anyone know of anything that can improve swimming besides actually swimming? I'm trying to find anything perhaps with free weights or a body-weight exercise that would strengthen the related muscles. I'm aware that I need to work on technique primarily, but I'm seriously SOL for a couple of months.

Not sure how those with more experience feel about this, but last year I went to the rock gym once-a-week and definitely felt it if I had a swim scheduled for the next day (pulling strength work and core). Obviously, it won't do a lick for your swim form, but a really fun strength alternative to the climbing machine.

Logged in some cardio before the gym closed for the holiday.  Will put in some time on trainer tomorrow, and then I'll disappear for a few days.

I hope all of you who celebrate have a very Merry Christmas.  More chat in the New Year--Jackie

_Deb_ - 2010-12-23 10:21 AM So, I'm seriously short on sleep today.  Thanks to a croupy kid overnight, I might have slept for 4 hours.  Fortunately I had only planned a 30 minute bike on the trainer, and I think I should still be able to get that in.

Can I ask what kind of pedals everyone has and prefers on their road bikes?  I got my bike last week, but I have yet to get shoes and pedals for it (just have cheap platform pedals on it temporarily).  Any tips on what to look for when I get the shoes?

I use Shimano style road pedals.  I think their official type is SPD-SL.  I have the 105 version on my road bike, and the R-540's on my tri bike.  I honestly can't tell the difference.

I use Look Keo Classics.. i use to use the SPD's. after awhile i developed a hot spot.. (hot spot typically happens with non-carbon shoes.. is when you feel the SPD on the ball of your foot when pedaling.. pretty uncomfortable.) the surface area is bigger as well. making the pedal stroke feel better..

I'd LOVE a rock gym, but all we have here is rocks and I don't have a rope or anyone to belay for me. I'm hoping to get a transfer to Tucson at some point so that I have access to decent infrastructure again.

We've gone down to minimum manning out here for the past 2 days, so training was put on hiatus until things go back to normal.  But, with that being said, hope everyone back home has a great Christmas!

Tomorrow is going to be a nice, long, 50 minute run.  Bring the dust!

tri808 - 2010-12-23 7:19 AM As far as wheels are concerned, I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the aero wheels from a startup company called Flo Cycling.  They're designing new wheels based off the expired patent from Zipp's torrodial design.  Supposed to be released in the next few months at a price point of $250-300 per wheel for 60 or 90 mm clinchers.

I've heard good things about those planet X wheels...but I prefer not to get tubulars at this point.

Just wanted to say thanks for being patient.  Our development is going well.  We opened our carbon fiber molds last week.  We hope to have our first sample products in 30-50 days.  If all goes as planned our pre-order should be near the end of first quarter 2011.

Happy Holidays,

Definitely enjoying the food myself!

Had a nice tempo run today.  Did 3 miles under 7:00/mile.  That's only the second time I've ever done that. This run often strategy seems to be helping.

Newbz: In terms of the over/under set, it's at the beginning of the workout video so my legs are pretty fresh but it is a 10 minute set (1 min over/1 under).  By the last set I was definitely hurting to hold wattage.  I have been thinking that 10% might be a bit better though.  Haven't had the chutzpah to try it yet.

Merry Christmas everyone!
