I did a century ride this past Sunday, have a Sprint Tri this Sunday, and another one on August 7th, with two more off road tris on Tuesday nights.  I'm thinking it was a mistake for sign up for all of these events so close to the Timberman, but what doesn't kill me will make me more sore/tired - right?

I have done 4 times the training this year as I did last year - since this is my first HIM - prior to this I have only done sprints - so it seems appropriate.

Can anyone tell me about the swim start:  Is it a beach start or water start?  If beach, do you start in the water or is there a run into the water?  Thanks.

there are plenty of Timberman videos on youtube including the start of a few waves.  Looks like you're in the water but it's super shallow and most run/dolphin dive for a while before starting to crawl.

This is such an awesome race - I was so impressed last year that I had to come back for a repeat - some of the nicest people I've ever met out on the course - awesome water, plenty of hills, etc.

Look forward to spending a half a day out on the course with you all in a few weeks

Any of you veterans to this race or HIM distance in general have any tips for the first-timers?  What do you wish you knew before your first HIM?

Thanks!

Know what you are capable of doing on race day based on your training and do not get all caught up in the hype. Have a plan and stick with it up until the point whereby you need to improvise. Do not do anything different on race day. Stick with what you have done in training. Train as you plan to race. Have fun!

There are several waves. You spend most of the time standing on the beach watching swimmers start their day. Once it is time for your wave to start, you enter the water and wait for the gun (or someone to yell go!). While standing in the water, you are pretty much knee deep. You will walk to the water and have time to position before the start of the race.

Totally agree with the comment above. I have done it a number of times and I keep coming back. Beautiful venue and great support.

Good to see folks posting again!  Not too many weeks left now
My training is going well.  I have been able to get to Lake Placid twice to train (and watch/volunteer at IMLP ) and feel pretty confident about hills now.  I have a short course race on Sunday and then nothing until Timberman.  Should be a fantastic time!

Hey, I was in LP this past Sunday taking a couple of laps around the course as well. It was a beautiful day. The volunteers were great. Yup, Timberman is only a few short weeks away. I am very much looking forward to it.

Swim waves are posted on the site under the "Course" tab.  After being in the last wave last year I am happy to be in wave 6 this year!!!  Of course I will be swam over by waves 7,8 and 9 (M45-49 and M40-44) but at least I won't lonely on the run.

Wave 5 for me (M 50-54)...unusual...at most races, us old guys get stuck near the back.  Looks like who I'll get to swim over will be my wife...she's in wave 3.

(Actually, I have to give her some grief about that...she loves to whine to people about how, as an over-45 woman, she's "always in the last wave."  She can't complain about that this time:  She's in the first wave after the pros.)

I'm in wave 4. Tell me what your wife looks like, and I'll point you in the right direction.

AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm in the very last wave.  Wave freaking 17! My only wish was that I wasn't in the last wave.  I do not want to be finishing when they are packing up.

I wish I knew Chrissie Wellington would be putting the finisher medal around my neck, so I wouldn't look so surprised in my photo. :-)

It's a long day - Don't fret about anything early on. Don't worry about anyone else, just race your own race. I did this race last year. Water was a little too choppy for me - I would have eaten less pre-race. The 2 of those things together made me feel a bit nauseous. The bike is awesome. Once you get those early hills out of the way, you can fly!!! I think it's a very gradual downhill out, so coming back you won't be as fast.

Hey all!  Lots of good posts on here.  I'm sorry for all those disappointed in their swim waves.  I'm happy for everyone who is feeling confident in their training (I wish I was one of them.  Ha!).

Does anyone know anything about the Sprint on Saturday?  My girlfriend is traveling up with me for the race.  She is considering doing the sprint on Saturday.  We found a local bike shop that will rent her a decent enough Cannondale road bike for the day.  She does plenty of tri here at home, mostly sprints, with an occasional Oly thrown in.  The problem is that she does not do any hill training on the bike.  I've been getting almost all of my weekend riding in on the hills to help me prepare for Timberman.  The bike course for the sprint is the same, just an earlier turn around.  It appears that there is at least one substantial climb in the first 10-12miles, with a few more decent rollers.  If my gf hasn't done any hill work (and the bike is the sport she is least strong in), is this bike course a bad idea for her, especially on a rental bike (albeit a good quality ride)?  All candid thoughts and input are appreciated.

For those that have done it before - Are you allowed to and is there opporunity to do a swim warm up?  Can you warm up while the other waves are going off?  I'm in wave 12 (0750 start) and that is a long time to be standing around.

I rode the out and back course on Saturday this past weekend.  Here's my $0.02 worth:

The first 5 miles is generally up hill, (small lengths of down)

From mile 5 to 10.3 is rolling up and down

Mile 10.3 to 12 is the challenge

Mile 12 to 26 is a gradual rise and fall, but mostly flat and super fast (24 mph average) with serious cross winds!!!  Aero bike is a big plus here!

Then you turn around and go back the way you came.

Some jerk at mile 26 was P.O. having a rider on HIS road and had some choice words for a Sunday morning - wait till the 21st Buddy!!!  I hope you enjoy the swarm!!!

Does anyone know how choppy the swim is?  I shouldn't have a problem as I swim in Lake Ontario but last weekend at KTown Tri I wasn't liking the waves and that was only 750m!

It was as smooth as glass on Saturday, but that's not to say there won't be tsunamis coming ashore the day of the race.

Last year a storm rolled in and by the time my wave was in the water it was pretty choppy...enough to make me nauseous. I hope the water is calmer this year.

a little late...just finding you guys now.  I'm super excited to be in wave 6...had many people lamenting about waiting on the beach forever and getting cold!  I'll be using that 5 minutes to try and get as far ahead of the men as humanly possible.

Wondering for those who have raced before...what's the morning rush like?  We're staying about 4 miles up the road right off Rt. 11 and I'm not sure I should try to drive down or just get dropped off. What time does the parking open and what time does it fill up??

At the point where I just want the race to hurry up and get here..first HIM and totally psyched!!

Yes... What time do we have to get there?? Everyone I have talked to says you need to get there at 4am but I suspect they get to every race at 4am
