I did 90% OF MY TRAINING FOR MY LAST HALF MARY ON A TREADY LAST YEAR.

Really? Hm. I've been avoiding the treadmill with the excuse that it's not like wogging outside. So either I need to get on the treadmill, or find a different excuse. LOL

Seriously though --- How did you achieve it? Did you just set it to your 'regular pace'? Did you raise it on an incline? Etc.

rh8463 - 2011-02-01 11:07 PM ....and now to the most important decision of my day. Which new shorts to order for my next fight. I think I am going to veer away from black and silver and go for green which is my favourite colour, so my 2 choices are below. Which is anyones favourite? I can't decide....

My daughter loves the one on top.  She asked if they made it in a size 6.  As in a kids size 6...

Hee hee, I think I am leaning towards the top pair too, just slightly now. Actually, they are in Thai sizes so I will be getting an XL or XXL even though I'm an 8 I guess in US sizes, so a small sould probably do for your daughter!

OK, there's just something disturbing to hear that a size 8 is an XXL.....

I have a question regarding portions of fruit and veg.  I just had my main meal of the day.  As part of it I had half a cucumber, a tomato, a banana, a cup of watermelon and 18 raw peanuts.  Is that the equivalent of a serving of vegetables and a serving of fruit? (That's how I counted them yesterday)  Or is it more?  Do quantities matter?

Thanks!

I say the cucumber and tomato are 1 veg and the banana and watermelon are each 1 fruit.  THe reason I count the cucumber and tomato combined is that cucumber would be a "free" food with wt watchers or similar programs, it takes more cal to digest it than are in it.

Isn't a tomato actually a fruit? It has seeds.....

I have been thinking about vibrams, but I'm not sure with the mixed reviews. My main concern is that I'm heavy, secondary concern is that I'm flat footed, both issues come up in discussion. I will look into this some more. It has to wait until spring anyway... no vibrams in winter for me!

I switched to flats. I like them. I've had *fewer* problems (knee, hip and ankle) using them.

Its included in my menu for tonight
Chicken, bean and pancetta stew with veggies, and I'm too cheap to buy pancetta usually at ridiculius prices over here so bacon it is!

D001 - 2011-02-02 7:46 PM
mbasta - 2011-02-02 4:20 PM My training went well today, but I question how well I will perform in the dietary portion of this challenge.

I just sat down to start writing down the half marathon training plan for May 22 and realized it is only 16 weeks away. It's a good thing I decided to do this now because the plan is 18 weeks long. I'm feeling very overwhelmed at the moment because I have yet to run more than 14(?) kilometers in one session, and it's a blizzard outside. I have been running throughout the end of fall and winter except the 3 weeks I lost to bronchitis, and I can honestly say I don't like it. I'm slow enough with dry pavement, it's so hard to move when 1/3 of each push gets lost to sliding back wards. There's also the ongoing issue of mid foot blistering that hasn't been solved, just reduced, and a small muscle in my lower leg that just won't stop complaining even with the 3 week break.

I'm not trying to woe is me on you all - I just wanted to share my currently overwhelmed state with other people who know what it's like. I don't have many athletes in my physical(?) life to talk about these things with. Maybe I should have just blogged it?
No no, you're allowed to talk about stuff like 'training issues' here. It *is* BT, after all. LOL I'd say that you're in good physical shape already, which is in your favor. You'll recover from the bronchitis soon. (I'm assuming you don't have something else, like asthma going on, right?) But what's up with the blistering and lower leg? Is it a shoe-related thing?

The bronchitis just left the building last week luckily! I am finally training at a better intensity now, but I haven't assessed damage done to my endurance because I can't really test it. This is probably for the best since I can be a bit of a control freak.

Oh you must have missed the foot saga.

My skin loosens and slides off in (what I think) is thick layers on the inner portion of my mid foot. This started happening at about 8kms and became intolerable (took a week to heal) at about the 12km point. I asked BT and I tried: Vaseline, body glide, moleskin, double walled socks, bandaids, super glue... and combinations of these. I did a 1 hour run (unknown distance) yesterday and there was mild irritation but no skin shifting or breakage with just the double walled socks, which seem to be the best option. I need to see them at work at longer distances/times.

As for the muscle situation, I have ongoing pain behind my inner ankle and in the mid foot that can become quite intense during runs and I feel mildly non-stop. Even when I was off for 3 weeks with bronchitis it didn't stop... It makes me nervous after what Judi was just going through, but at the same time maybe it's not a big deal. I've been stretching my lower leg more frequently and intensively to try and prevent major problems.

I went to a Japanese shop here in Canada with a petite friend of mine. She was a large and the shopkeeper told me there was nothing in my size. Ouch!

Other countries will have to change their sizes soon with Westernization... I went to China last May and there were plenty of people wider than me.

The plan I used for that half mary came from Runner's World.  It included a lot of tempo and speed work so I used the speed settings to adjust through my run.  Yes, this plan assumed a solid run base.

Soooo, if the plan called for 4 miles with 4 AI (aerobic intervals) I would start the first mile at my baseline pace then 4 x 1 minute (up to 4 min at the end) would be at about 9:05 pace through the middle couple miles then finish easy pace again.
Similar pattern with the goal pace intervals, only a bit faster on those.

1. I set my base pace for an average run (10 min)
The aerobic intervals I played with my pace making them harder as I progressed.  Goal pace I also made faster as I progressed

2.  I set it at 1% incline which is actually fairly level, when set at the 0 it is somewhat downhill due to the way the motor machinery sits.

Some people find running on treadmills makes them more prone to injury.(ie Pam)  I found it helpful to learn that I could go a lot faster than I thought possible for me.  BUT, the belt is doing most of the work....your legs just have to keep up with it!!  You do need to do as much as possible in the conditions you anticipate on race day.....sooooo, for an early season race in cold environments you want to layer and head outside.

Remember my first half mary?  It got REALLY HOT on race day and we hadn't had any weather to get used to it.....they took at least 3 runners off the course due to heat emergencies.

Having an ipod or tv to watch was essential, along with playing with the speed settings to keep it interesting.

It's a fruit, but people treat it like a veggie... and they get upset if you call it a fruit. Most of my favorite savoury dishes are tomato based.

I want to join.

Most normal weeks I train 10-12 hours a week.

In February I'm going to be on two trips for 8 total days in Feb....and will be bikeless so those two weeks my volume will be significantly lower.

So which group should I join...6-10 or 10+? What does BT say?

3rd day in and training is lagging slightly, but so far am ahead on the healthy eating side compared to January.  Went out at lunch and bought a heap of food to keep in my office, once I leave the other 'snacks' at home I'll have no choice but to eat the fruit at work.

Meanwhile after floods in January here wiped out large parts of the countries vege growing areas, overnight we had a massive cyclone wipe out a good portion of our fruit crops as well.  With all the recent rains breaking the drought, the farmers are looking likely to hang onto all their animals as well which should restrict our meat choices as well.  All up I'm voting for March to be a McDonalds eating challenge cause at this rate that's the only food we'll be able to afford.

This is very true - it took me 4 different supermarkets last weekend to get everything I needed and all produce prices are about double the usual.

On another note, during the Brisbane flooding most of the McDonalds around us had to shut down as they had no supplies - hilarious - one of the few good side effects at the time I think!

Yet another king cake in the break room today. I won't count it as a victory until it's all gone, and no one seems interested in the last 1/4 of the cake. I just filled my belly with an apple, an orange and some water, so I'm satisfied.

So glad everyone's enjoying the challenge so far!   Couple things to remember... you can only receive 1 bonus point for each category each week.  So if you forego more than one junk food you still only get one point.  Also after each week I'll post the standings for each group so we can see who's in the lead.  Let me know if you have any questions!
