Half marathon two weeks after your first marathon is a bad idea...

Stu: Great list there for swimming. I struggle with it so much!

Carol: I haven't had a problem with the asthma till Monday. Last episode was 3 or 4 years ago! Didn't ever think I'd have issues with it swimming. Someone told me to stick it into my suit. I have tri shorts that are pretty snug, so I can shove it in there. I'll just make sure to swim close to buoys, but I'm thinking that it's the chemicals in the pool water.

So, one of my biggest issues is that I get so angry when I can't complete a training session that I'll dwell on it and want to bag my entire training. I've been stewing over this swimming. I really need to get a grip.

WOW!  Looks like a great group!  I've still got two pages of posts to catch up on but wanted to throw this out there.

Have a January 22 marathon.  Training is going ok - last couple of weeks have been difficult (logs are current), but I'm hanging in there.

Question is, my friends want me to sign up for a race on February 4th - they have 1/2 mary and 5K options (of course, the 10K isn't an option, which I would have picked).  Is two weeks too soon after the 26.2 to go 13.1?

I'm estimating about a week for recovery (i.e. - NO RUNNING!) then a couple of short runs the second week.  Since this is my first mary, I don't want to underestimate the recovery and certainly don't want to go into the start of tri training with an injury.

What are your long term goals for the year? Will running a half marathon 2 weeks after a full benefit or potentially damage your long term goals?

Michael - Thank you for the link.

Carol - Yes it is a hike to get to the pool. There is a lot of wide open space in West Texas that I have to cover to get to a pool, but it makes it easy to set bike route.

I have a training/scheduling question for y'all. It looks like my first tri (oly is what I'm leaning towards, but maybe just the sprint) will be 5/12. There is a lot of time between now and then which is a lot of time for me to lose motivation (that won't be a problem with this group though, thanks Bennet). But I figure if I have another race to keep me going towards I will keep at it. So here comes my question, or at least I'm getting to it. Running is where I could improve the most I think. So If I focused on a 10K road race a few weeks before the 5/12 tri would that be a good training goal/plan.

I've used Jeff Galloway's walk/run/walk method with some good success (got my 5K pr with walk/run/walk). If I used his 10K Plan with bike and swim (when I can) mixed in on the cx days does that sound like a decent plan? Or should I use a tri specific plan?

Dennis-a guy I know here locally did his first IM at IMFL in November and used "Be Iron Fit".  I picked up a copy of the book and it has some good information and plans for IM.

Aren't the plans all 30 week plans? What does week 6 or 7 look like volume wise? Long run and bike distances? I can't find a local copy or I'd look myself.

I plan on doing both, but Buffman and Squeaky comes first and is the oly on that weekend.

Dennis-you are right 30 weeks. But each plan is broken down in 10 weeks segments: Base, build and peak.  3 different plans. 1. Just finish 2. Intermediate and 3. Advanced.

Weeks 6-10 of intermediate are 7.5-11 hours.  Looks like during the build phase you are at 10-15hrs and similar for the peak phase.  This is all with 1 rest day per week.

So, one of my biggest issues is that I get so angry when I can't complete a training session that I'll dwell on it and want to bag my entire training.

Blanda, that is so frustrating!  I deal with something different (type 1 diabetes), but it can have a similar impact at times.  Stubborn/dangerously low blood sugar has ended quite a few workouts prematurely for me over the years.  It really sucks when it happens, and I don't always have a nice polite mature response to it (can you say tears and cursing??).  But I think we are all here in this group because we have no intention of letting whatever issues we have in our lives keep us from pursuing our goals.  So here's to a new day of training, along with an inhaler and some glucose tucked into our respective tri suits!

Did a run/walk today and it felt pretty good. Also did my 'run/walk - swim' block today which I was happy about. Did 1.5 hr. on the trainer followed by a 5k run. First brick I've done in a while.

All I can say is that the posts are flying in this place.  I can't keep up.  I got my logs up to date and going to sleep in tomorrow morning.  By sleep in I mean 6:00.  Sad when that's considered sleeping in.  Really enjoying the new group.

Good morning all! Did an early recovery spin on the trainer this morning and hope to get a run in this evening before going to a party.  But first, got to head in work and get some work done.

Have a good day everyone.

Di, congrats on nearing the starting line for your first full marathon!

Speaking of running...could you running gurus in the group share some wisdom with me?  All was going well running wise, until mile 9 of a half mary on 12/4, where I fell and sprained an ankle.  Followed that with 1.5 weeks in a boot, RICE, etc., then back to swimming, then walking, and started running a little this week.  Ankle is weak but not painful on short runs on nice flat surfaces.  How quickly is reasonable to plan on ramping back up and what does that look like (X% per week)?  Next half is 1/22 (this was originally going to be my "a" race), and another on 2/26.

Ouch!  The usual guideline (and it is just that -- not a rule) is 10% per week.  Coming back from injury, I would ditch the 10% rule.  Ironically, you might find yourself coming back faster than that (because you are really just returning to a volume that you held recently), but if the injury lingers, it will be much slower.  (I've had both happen to me coming back from injury.)  You really just have to listen to your body on this one, and back off at the slightest sign that things aren't going well.  (Any sharp pain during the run, any lingering pain after the run -- lingering for 15 minutes is OK, but lingering for hours is a sign to back off.)

Have you tried pool running?  Sounds like you're a candidate.

I would do the tri specific plan.  It is already training you to run a 10K, after all.  You can tweak the 10K race week a bit to give yourself a little taper and recovery, and you can add a bit to the running portion if you want to provide a little extra focus on preparing for the 10K.   A 16-week plan would start in about 6 weeks, which gives you some time to develop a decent base in preparation for jumping into the plan.

The reason is that the tri plan, as I said, is already preparing you to run 10K, whereas the 10K plan with some random mixed-in swim and bike isn't specifically preparing you to do the Oly.

That sounds like no fun.  Sorry to hear that you have to struggle through swimming in that way.  Do you happen to have access to a saltwater pool?  (Long shot, I know, but it could help.)

Alright, now that I'm caught up, what's on tap for everyone today?  I'm going to try to do a triple today:  pool 'run' followed by swim.  The bike later this afternoon.  All local pools will be closed on the 24th and 25th, so gotta get it in now!

Have a great day everyone!

Run on lunch - I'm limiting myself to 5km until I see the massage therapist for the ITB next week.  Hopefully a trainer ride this evening.

Thanks for the feedback on the 1/2.   I will do the 5K with my friends, who are just getting started, so it will be slow.  I will undoubtedly be thanking you all for your wisdom on that day! Smile

Continuing to be flexible during this crazy holiday time.  I kind of thought work would slow down, but I'm putting in more hours than ever.  Shifting my 9-miler to tomorrow, the 5 miler on Saturday and the 18-miler on Monday.

Enjoying this run training time, but can't wait to get back to tri in February!

Sorry I have been absent for the last couple of days. I'm currently traveling for the holidays. I did get up early yesterday and get my run in before getting on the road. I brought my bike and trainer with me, and will do an hour of intervals this afternoon. The biggest challenge of the trip will be eating well. I'm not going to obsess about it, but definitely need to apply the moderation principle!

Nothing exciting for me today.  10K at lunch with hill work + my usual sets of core, back and leg exercises.  Done.  Hoping to get a full week in this week b/c next week will likely be a "recovery" week - e.g. eat too much, drink too much, sit too much... too much.  Maybe will read the posts too... Guam, Hawaii, San Diego, Oregon, Canada... will you all be my BTBFs?  (Pretty cool actually!)

Nasty weather today here in LA (lower Alabama). Had to do a treadmill run and I just didn't have a very good run.  Legs were flat and heavy despite "recovery pace".  Early trainer workout in the morning before heading out to in-laws for the weekend. (Only 1.5 hours away).  Run only until I return on Monday.

My legs just have not bounced back from the 5K last Saturday.  I really pushed it in the race and I have found that as I get older it takes me SO much longer to recover from a hard race effort. I have been more tired this week than after any tri I did last year or even the HIM I did in 11/10.   Will try to take it a little easy next week so I can be ready to start 2012 strong.

Thanks for the input Michael!  So far so good on returning to running, but I'll have some good conversations with my body about how it's going along the way.  One more trip to the doc (a runner) early next week and if he agrees, thinking I target weekly LR of 6, 8, 10, 12, 1/22 race.  Then ramp it up a bit before the one on 2/26 if all goes well.

Randy, congrats on your 5K!!!  Sounds like a little Christmas break is timed just right for you.  Enjoy!

I picked up a cold, but got 4 miles in this morning since it's all in my head so far.  May take a down day tomorrow since swimming with my stuffed up head sounds lousy.  Then hoping to do an informal 10K (easy fun run) with a few friends Christmas eve morning.

So glad I'm not the only one that's a little intense about training details! I thought the pool I was swimming in was salt water, but I need to confirm that. Still need to see a doc to get my prescription. Not swimming till I do.

I HOPE to bike/run today while husband watches the kids at their swim lessons.
