I'm mostly a runner but I'm doing my first sprint triathlon in October.  I was hoping to join a mentor group for advice and inspiration.  My husband, Chet, says that this is the best one.    Is there still room?  I'll post profile information later.

Thanks, Kim!  I remember Chet telling me that you were doing Coast to Coast, too!  Disney still puts on my favorite races.  I plan on doing Tinkerbell every year.  The puppy is doing great... getting a little less naughty every day.

I have a little more time to introduce myself now.  I'm 38, married with two children.  Aidan is 10 and Abby is 8.  I started running in 2006 and have done 4 marathons, almost 20 half marathons, and several 5Ks and 10Ks.  A few of you know my husband, Chet, who caught the triathlon bug several years ago and worked his way up to doing 2 Ironmans (Ironmen?).  He's been trying to get me to give triathlons a shot for awhile now, but I've always been afraid of the bike and especially the swim.  I finally bit the bullet and signed up for the Irongirl sprint at the end of October.  I'm a teacher, so I have the summer off to hopefully get the bike and the swim figured out.

I don't really have any races coming up until the fall.  I'm planning on doing the Napa and Las Vegas Ragnars, and hopefully find a few more half marathons in there somewhere.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome.  I couldn't be any more inexperienced, so I look forward to learning from all of you!

Hey Oldsters, if we are getting new people, it might be wise to pull our bios together again.  Even a shortened version might be helpful!

It is 28F.  I have a 4 hour ride.  I want to be outside on the Parlee, but can't imagine riding in these temps.  Frustrated.

Suzy Shain - Madison WI

My Story:
Started endurance sports at the age of 40 after seeing the first IM WI in Madison in '02. I knew one day I wanted to do the race as a way to get over my fear of water. Since I didn't know how to swim and rarely biked I turned to running and did 12 marathons before deciding to tackle the limiter holding me back from triathlon--swimming.   Support from friends, many lessons and some deep soul searching got me to my first super sprint in '08.  Since then I've done IM WI in '10/'11/'12 and plan to do it in '13.  IM is my favorite distance.  I love to run and I have really learned to like the bike.  I just started doing TRX this off season and have really embraced it as a way to get a stronger core.

Family: Married for 23 years to Paul,  no kids, but we do have an awesome Cockapoo, Cooper.

'13 Races/Goals:  "A" race is IM WI #4 where I hope to hit 12:XX after a bad '12.  I completed the Oakland marathon in March where my goal was to achieve BQ #4 and break my marathon PR set in '07.  Fortunately, I did both so will be back in Boston next year.  Should be memorable.  Will add a few more short distance tris in there too.

Weight:  If I lost a couple of lbs. I wouldn't complain.  I always gain some amount of weight in the OS.  At 4'10" and 103lbs it is very easy for me to put on the lb if I'm not careful, even with volume.

What I need to work on: Maintaining a positive frame of mind if one of my disciplines isn't improving as much as I would like. This is usually swimming.

Other Tidbits: I live on the IM MOO bike course just past the ugliest hill of them all.  I just picked up my new tri bike this week, a custom Parlee.  Very excited!!

Here it is.........the big question.......WHO'S RACING THIS WEEKEND?  We want ALL the details.

Tell us about your bike.  What kind of bike do you ride?  What have you done to fine tune it into a racing machine?  Bike Porn is appreciated!

Ok, I'll go

I'm running my 2nd race in my 50K Dances With Dirt series in Gnaw Bone, IN.  It's a hilly course, and honestly I'm a LOT intimidated.  No time goal, just finish.  I'll be working all day Friday, then driving 4 hours to a campground near the race, picking up my packet and then crawling into my tent for the night.  Going to be alone at this race, so I'll be counting on the volunteers even more than usually for encouragement and support.  And, I'll be thinking about all of you too. Since I'll be camping, I really need to think through my pre-race & post-race needs and make a packing list.  Don't want to forget anything vital.

elev profile

Wow Jayne....you got this one, the good news is that you get to go down those hills too. Dont worry you are not alone we are there in spirit....every time the wind blows feel the energy   hopefully the wind is blowing up the hills... every little boost of energy is going to  help.  I wish I had known you were racing so far I would have come out and given a foot massage at every aid station

Well, I had 4,750 ft of FUN yesterday.  What an awesome race.  The course was super challenging, but SO BEAUTIFUL that the miles just ticked away....all 31 of them Laughing in only 8 hours and 7 minutes.  I'm not sure how to describe it.  The weather was superb for the race, cool and cloudy.  If a single-track hilly trail run wasn't challenging enough, the race directors ramped it up by taking us off the trail bushwhacking many times....straight up the hills, straight down the hills, across creeks over and over again, straight up the river for a bit, along miles of muddy horse trails (ewe), and even down a slippery ski slope.  I felt good through the entire race and had enough in the tank to pick it up in the last few miles.

Oh, and I got to meet David Goggins post-race.  He's done Badwater (135 miles in Death Valley), and a bunch of other ultra running, he holds the Guinness Book of World Records for pullups, he's super nice and humble, and oh so hot!  And there was BEER from Backwoods Brewery. Fatty, you still here?

Bruce, the reason I quoted your post was to give you a heads up.  The next 50k is on July 18th.  Mark your calendar...I'll be looking for you at the aid stations Kiss

GogginsGnaw Bone

With my friends, Mark (50 miles), his wife Liz (1/2 Marathon) and your's truly.  Greatest finishers medal ever, a bone to gnaw on!  P.S. I look really short Undecided

Quick bio:

Sporting background:

I've always been active but when I was younger my main sports were squash followed by lots of beers or rugby followed by insane amounts of beer...

I spent a few years in the navy and ran just enough to get through my annual fitness test but never really any more than that.

In my mid 30's I emigated to Australia and trained to be a surf lifesaver which got me into ocean swimming.I then  decided to enter the City 2 Surf 14km run in Sydney and that started me on endurance sport. Since then I've done a few HM's and one full marathon but I don't race much.

About 3 years ago someone suggested I get a bike and do tri's and I completed my first IM last week!

Family:

Married with 3 kids aged 14,11 and 9; have 2 labradors

Races/goals for 2013:

Recover from the IM, improve my bike strength and speed

I've got no more races planned as yet but I'm thinking about the Sunshine Coast HM in August and a few ocean swims plus a HIM later in the year if I can find one.

Hi Jill, good to have you in the group, I feel a bit like a stalker because I've seen all these pics of your holidays and your lovely puppy on FB!

I was in Chet's MG in my first triathlon season and so he gave me lots of advice for my first sprint and Oly. Ask lots of questions, there's a lot of experienced people on here (not me...!)

Ok, one more post: great pictures Jayne and great race, you're looking very fit these days, ultra running obviously suits you.

I've got 2 friends doing the The North Face 100km race in the Blue Mountains near Sydney this weekend, they're fanatical about ultra's now.

PS Sorry for so many post's but have you seen how low our post count is???? The Manatees are over 900 already and we're at 150ish!!!

Re: the crash.  I did decide to go outside even though it was low 30s and very windy because I wanted to ride the new bike.  Totally lost control on a downhill in aero because the wind hit my new deeper wheels and sent me spinning out of control.  I really hate that feeling.  Hit my head first, then the whole right side came crashing down.  Fortunately another rider saw what happened and came back to pull me out of the middle of the Hwy and my bike too.  Bike had issues which are now resolved except for the two big gashes in the paint (so sad about that) and I am sorer than you can imagine, with the shoulder and upper back being the worst.  Recovery day today and I'm getting a massage tonight.  Should have stayed inside!

PS. Pics would be worthless.  I was wearing pants and a coat both of which were destroyed in the skid.  Very sad about that.  Both were brand new.  F$ck.
