Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() snaps10 - 2007-01-12 12:02 PM just wondering, what does everyone do that allows you to train long hours for tris, marathons, etc. ? i own an insurance agency, which allows me a fairly flexible schedule, but still find it hard to find the hours to put in. alot of the time i find myself working out at 10:30 at night just so i can workout, spend some time with the kids, and still try and make enough dough to pay for these expensive hobbies. I'm a Civil Engineer. Usually just the regular 8-5 unless we have a project due. No kids. Some nights it is tough but I typically am only out of the house for 90 minutes when I work out during the week. My wife is very fit and active and she wants me to succeed with this ambition of mine so that helps a lot. When I trained for a 1/2 Marathon last year, I did all my long runs on the weekends. I found myself planning my weekends around my training rather than fitting it in where possible. I'm sure Madcow and his double-IM training is on a another level of time management. |

I work sales for a corporate compliance company and deal with attorneys and large corporations. Good news is we are owned by a Dutch parent company and I only have to work 35 hours a week and 4 day work week. Wednesdays off so I only ever work two days in a row. I also get 6 weeks of paid time off plus holidays....I really can't complain and they just sent me to Orlando & sponsored my marathon. One daughter in college so I have plenty of time to train & training partners I can choose from at most times. It can't all be good.......my boss has a tendancy to drive me crazy!! |

I have set hours 7-4:30 with every other Friday off. The problem is I am stuck to a desk instead of being outside working crime scenes. My boss is really cool and she lets me run as long as I need to at lunch. She is really flexible when it comes to me taking a day off to train or working on weekends to make up for long lunches or missed days. |

She is really flexible when it comes to me taking a day off to train or working on weekends to make up for long lunches or missed days. too cool. ive found that i tend to be my own worst boss. it is so hard for me to allow myself time in the middle of the day, when i know there's work i could be doing. i find myself at the computer late at night all too often. next question from the tri-newb. will a wetsuit be beneficial in my sprint? 1/2 mile swim. average water temp of 73 degrees. im working hard to keep my t1 time as low as possible (under 2 min if i can) its hard for me to think of how cold 73 is going to be. the air temp should be slightly higher than the water temp. |

Really, you need to weigh out how much speed gained in the water vs. time lost in transition. I have practiced taking my suit off so many times that the difference in transition woud be small. Buuuutttt, The more efficient your swim stroke is, the less beneficial your wetsuit will be. So if you are a crappy swimmer and but a fast clothes changer then the wetsuit is good. |

I am also blessed with a boss who understands the need for balance in one's life, and is herself a marathoner. Still, scheduling in training can be interesting, particularly with hubby also being into endurance sports. At this point, we're pricing out another trainer so we can do a few "rides" together. I can't wait for the days to get long enough to do evening runs/rides again! |

Member ![]() | ![]() I'm manage a team of healthcare representatives who sell to clinicians. This job could be 25 hours a day, 8 days a week like so many other careers. Wife and two sons under 6 and the schedule is full. Most work outs come EARLY morning. Wake up before 5AM on workout days (not weekends) and do what I can and am at work ready to roll by 8 AM. It's all time management...its just not the prime time you get to manage. Nothing like a great workout before starting your day though!! All the Best |

I have told my coworker she MUST wake me up at 6:00 AM so I can run 2-3 miles every morning. She is training for an Ironman so I'm sure she'll get me up. However, tomorrow I will be back in the office and we have a wonderful admin assistant that will load the pictures for me. She is the one that loaded my avatar picture also......she's the best!! OK .....Here is the question posed to the group. What do you find funny or ironic that you have trouble doing or cannot do at all. Here is my list 1) Computer technology.....I can handle the basics only. 2) I don't know how to change a flat on my bike. I have all the tools and co2 cartridge but push comes to shove I would struggle if I actually got a flat. 3) I can't do a flip turn to save my life. I'm not a bad swimmer, but flip turns consist of water in my nose, or after flipping somehow I end up turned sideways....LOL So I just touch and turn. |

It's lame, I know Honeychile, if you can't download music to your iPod, which involves, um, simply plugging it in, you aren't computer savvy. Just sayin'. And that, my mad friend, is why happy is your first, your last, your everything. Ok, go back to being a role model now. |

It is more of an accountability challenge. If you have a training plan, post what you have scheduled and we will hold you to it. If you don't have a plan, post what you think you can do, again, we will hold you to it. If you want to, you can post a total for the week (in miles or minutes or both). Or you can post what you are going to do on each day.
I will go first: I will do 16.5 miles for the week Tuesday: 3 miles, Thursday: 1.5 miles, Saturday: 5 miles, Sunday: 7 miles |
