Nole40 - 2007-12-22 7:20 PM Mike- We saw the "heat wave" down here in Chicago as well. Definitely was a nice change, although it will be short lived.

It is crazy here, now at 12:30 AM it is up to 47 degrees, outside of snowpiles from plows the snow is completly gone Surprised Laughing

Okay I think I spoke to fast. Not even 24 hours later and we already have 8 inches of snow. The wind blew so hard last night that I lost about 20 shingles. We had over 50 mile an hour winds this morning so I couldn't get up on the roof to fix it. Now I have snow blowing everywhere and no relief in sight. Merry Christmas to me as I will probably be playing Bob the Builder up on the roof.

Hopefully everyone elses Christmas Time is going great. Smile

Still getting over a cold, but I finally got my coach's new athlete questionnaire all filled out and sent in. I should be getting a plan soon.

So, who got the coolest tri-related gift for the Holidays?

I think the coolest tri-related thing I got is a little (kinda cheesy) electric "ATM" piggy bank that keeps a balance of how much money you put in it -- complete with some cash. It's my new "training fund". Very thoughtful.

Hey all!

Hope you all had a good holiday... Mine was good, but I totally blew any hopes of following a healthy diet for a few days there... but Im back on track, so Its all good now.

Didn't get any big tri gifts for xmas (though I did buy myself a new bike a couple weeks before Xmas if that counts!!), my mom surprised me by getting me a tri book "the woman triathlete" which is pretty cool actually!

So I've started looking at what kind of races I want to do this year, and when I can start with my first one (I'd be racing in something... ANYTHING... ASAP if I could even find a 5KM race within 500 Miles of here..).. there's a half marathon in March but I'm not sure I'd be ready for that.

I'm looking at an Aquathon in march, I've never done one before, but it's pretty much the only kind of race available here till May-ish. It's a 750 M swim and a 5km run, what do you guys think? Think that's a doable goal? The 5km will not be a problem... and right now I'm swimming about 4-5 times a week, about 1000-1500 M each time, but the most I've swam right now is 300M at once, I usually do 3 x 100 2 x 200 1 x 300 and some otherthings mixed in there... so is 750 M in total in march a big push? They also have the same Aquathon in February.

Let me know your opinions:-) Thanks!

I got a nice Discovery team jersey, a marathon training diary, and all the Christmas party food to last a life time. I topped it off with a piece of DQ ice cream birthday cake. So I have some making up to do, my training will be spotty until the kids are back in school. The kids always come first and we have had a great Christmas break.

Hey All- Glad to hear that everyone received some good gifts over the holidays.

Seeing as we are gearing up for 2008, what are everyone's plans for the first month of 08 as far as training? I'm still 2 months away from my base period, so my main goal is beginning the process to get ready for my training program in March. My official program will probably be 2 swims per week, 2-3 rides, and 3-4 runs (including short t-run). I won't hit this much frequency in January due to work, but that's what I want to get prepared for.

Hope everyone has a safe new year! I'm probably going to be out enjoying a few beverages in the area on Monday night.

I had a wonderful C-mas and it included my wife getting me the Garmin Forerunner 305.  Took it out on a short run yesterday.  As a side note I did not have any pain in my ITB, but my calves are a tad sore.

My offical HIM plan begins today.  It's really an IM plan but the first 22wks of the program are a good base for a HIM.  I'll take an extra two weeks for a taper in June for HIMKS.  If I'm feeling like a challenge I might attempt Redman IM in Sept.  You can check it out here if you're interested: http://www.wu94010.com/triathlon/storage/ironman-36wk.htm

Got back a little late today so I will get up everyones goals tomorrow, sorry first sign that I can be a slacker at times.

I see other groups coming up with challenges within their group. I will do a little more investigating into this and we can put something together if everyone wants.

Hope everyone is off to a great 2008!

Happy New Year group!!  I missed the Christmas postings, but I got a new polar HRM strap so I don't have to share with my stinky husband anymore, a Road ID (great for safety!), and some handy running gloves with little pockets in the palm.  Quite happy .

I am back from a pretty much 2 week absence from normal life routine, and man, did I ever fall off the horse.  I did ok when at my parents house, but it all just went to crap at my in-laws' place.  I am absolutely certain I have put on weight (I never used to gain this fast 5 years ago, I guess it's that whole "wow i'm not a teenager" thing going on), and I haven't run in a bit over a week.  Disaster!

However, this is giving me lots of ammo for planning resolutions for 2008!!!  I can't wait to figure out how I'm going to get awesome .

Lex, I totally think you can do that race - especially since you mentioned that you used to be a swimmer, I don't think it will be a problem for you to work up to 750M by then at all.  I never really do long swims, all my stuff is ** x 100, or ** by 400 at most, but I am quite certain I could swim 1000 straight if I wanted to, it just gets boring.  Unless - are you huffing puffing and out of breath at the end of 350M?  If not, I think you could probably do that race tomorrow!

Hey Lisa welcome back

The past is the past and we are all moving on and starting fresh. It's 4:47 and I am up and getting ready for my interval workout on the bike right now. Time to break into a new habit of getting my carcas out of bed and doing morning workouts Frown

Happy New Year everyone :-)

Lisa--> I hear about falling off the horse over the holiday season! I definently put some weight on, and ate like crap, but I also felt terrible and it made me realize that I can't do that to myself any more, and I've been a nutritionists dream for the last week or so haha As long as we're all ready to get back into it, going a little bit off for a few weeks never hurt anyone :-)

Thanks for your feedback on my Aquathon dillema, I think I'll do it for sure! Today was a big day for me in the pool! :-) I'm feeling pretty good about it, it was only about two months ago that I couldn't even swim 25M without feeling winded (or like dying in general..)and then today I swam 1000M non stop and I felt fantastic! I started out just to do a couple sets of 200, and it felt good so I thought why not continue and match the 500 I did on monday, felt awesome at 500 so since that race is 750 I continued on, hit 750 and thought it would be ridiculous to stop 250 short of a kilometer. So i hit the 1000M mark and stopped and felt great! Was breathing comfortably and didn't feel tired. So I think doing a 750 M race in a couple months should be A-okay! It wasn't fast today, it was just for the distance, but I could have pushed it alot harder.

There is an aquathon on Feb 24th and one on March 30th, I think I'll probably register for both just to give me something to work towards.

Does anyone else feel like they take a looooong time to warm up in the pool? I've found the last couple days when I've done the longer swims (and after my "official" warmup stuff) that around 250-300 M my mind/ body was like, alright..alright.. I think we're done for the day now, please? But if I push through that feeling for about 25-50 M it disaspears and the swim feels super easy after that.

Michael--> Nice work on getting up before 5am to workout!! Good start to the new year :-)

Question for anyone.. is it doing one race a month a reasonable goal, or too much for a first year? (They would be the two aquathons, sprint tri's, a half mary, the canadian death race, and possibly an olympic at the end of the season.)

Any opinions appreciated!

sorry for the loooong post!
Hope everyone has a great workout today

Happy New Year!

Switched gyms, now at Lifetime Fitness...place is like a mall!

Lexy -

Many times it feels like I need 800-1000yrds to warm up, sometimes I feel great out of the gate...I think it's normal.

One race per month is probably not too much for a first year triathlete. I did about 1 race/mo last year in my first year.

Not a bad first year...would like to see these total nearly double this year.
Some of the bike was done in Spin Class, I will not be logging spin or stationary under "Bike" any longer. Hamster wheel will still count toward "Run" though.

2007 totals
Bike: 111h 41m 04s - 1847.05 Mi
Run: 80h 07m 22s - 530.47 Mi
Swim: 83h 49m 04s - 179929.3 Yd

It sounds like a pretty doable goal, especially if you target one or two of them to really all out races, and just treat the other ones as intense training sessions. That is pretty much what I'm going to be doing this year, with up to three races in September.

Though, I have to say that a death race kind of sounds permanent....

Well.. hopefully the death race isn't permanent.. check it out :

www.canadiandeathrace.com

And we're doing it as a relay team of 5, so the max distance i'd be going is probably about 29 km, but it is pretty rough terrain, I think it looks like an awesome race!
