Would you shave those things!?? Clean up is SO MUCH EASIER! HAHA seriously considering that now. But I don't even like shaving my face, have had a goatee for 15 years just to avoid shaving my chin... |

DAMN!!! That looks like it must sting like hell. Showers can not be good right now. ......but think of the sexy battle scar! Now when you tell your battle story remember: you were flying down the trail at at least 45mph, and you hit something massive that came out of no where.... a bear! That's it, you hit a bear! There seems to be alot of that going around. I'm sure there are still bears somewhere around the DC area. Or say you hit a republican!! |

I was hopping around trying not to punch a hole in the wall it hurt so bad. The scary thing is I wasn't going that fast just on a tight turn, I can't imagine what it would look like if I had some serious speed going. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Sorry about the crash, glad it was at slow speed. When I crashed my bike I was going really slow, down a very steap hill, but there was sand on the pavement and a really sharp corner. The combo had my tires a skidding toward the siderail and well at that moment I had a brief thought that clipless peddles can be inconveinent at times. I got a nice gash over my eye from my glasses hitting something and boy was I a sight after riding my bike home the rest of the way. I looked like I had taken a granade for my comrads with the wind splattering blood over everything. It was 3 days before my first tri and the crash broke the little cable bracket under the bike totaling the frame. So I ended up renting a bike for the event. I may well never learn the limits of my bike's cornernering ability now, and I have much respect for gravity and enertia and itty bitty tire treads. K so I decided that I am gona do the Las Vegas Tri HIM in 10 days. Bad news is I have to drive down on my wife's birthday. And now I have to figure out what kind of taper to do and such. I offered to take her with me, but 5 kids, the wife and 1260 miles of driving in 2 days + the HIM probably wouldn't be much of a vacation for her. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL She is pretty much the most understanding wife ever. Thus the house addition to put in the swimspa with a top end of 4mph current. The lake temp I have been swimming at has dropped to 60 F now. Probably next week it will drop into the mid 50s. Hopefully the contractor gets the ball rolling on that soon. They did dig holes for the footings yesterday, so I take that as a positive note. I am hoping for the end of October, but up here things move.... s... l...o...w...l...y. I find myself wondering if I can be ready for a Full Ironman distance race for fall of next year. That would only be 2 years from the start of my off the couch training, but.... it would be the next dragon to tame after the HIM, ... which of course I haven't completed yet (10 days). Steve, or anyone else, able to comment on thoughts of jumping from couch to HIM in one year and then to Full Im in the next year? I am currenlty training 10 to 15 hours a week, can ride my bike 70 miles on a long day and run/jog 14-15 miles on a long day, can swim 2.6 miles or so, each individually. I know that you posted your millage prior to your IMCA, but you have 9 years of base. I should hit 2500 miles biked, 1000 miles run and 80-100 miles swam for this year. I was thinking 3000 miles biked, 1200 miles run 115 miles swam for next year. I am hoping that winter doesn't cut down too much on those expectations. |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I think going from couch to HIM in a year is a tremendous achievement which very few people could do. I didn't quite make it to olympic distance in my first year. Sounds like you 've trained well for the HIM and should be able to do this without much trouble. Go for it. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Definately GO TRACY!!! Ya I started that post to see what the average milage for our folks who train for IM are. I determined that the average "to finish" IM was around 3k miles biked, 1k miles ran and 110 miles swam. Some did it with less, some did it with more. Obviously the folks who put in much more than that and who have a longer training base also finished much faster. I would be shooting for a 16 hour finish for a full IM. Yay they are pooring the cement/concrete for the addition this am. I am so excited. I hope my wife keeps the dog off of the wet cement, and the kids. Only 9 days left to my HIM. I looked at the weather report and it should be a HOT 95-100 F for the race. On that note anyone have some electrolyte/salt tabs that they like? I think I may need to pick some up. |

Pro 4100 Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Yippy Tracy... You are already on the road, but I will send go JU JU your way! Race smart, race the way you trained, and have fun! We are looking forward to hearing from you when you get back! Easy to say don't be nervous but "DON'T BE NERVOUS!" Baowolf.... In regards to your question--- I don't know if you can put a NUMBER (distance wise)on what type of training makes for a good Ironman. Everyone is different. Some people have stronger events and wont "train" as much for those events.... To go along with that people have some limitations in life like family that won't allow them to bike 3k, run 1k, and swim 85 miles.... It just isn't feasible.. If you commit to the Ironman, or 1/2 Iron, and/or any distance for that matter you have to make sure that is doesn't affect your worklife, and more importantly you HOMELIFE! Family is our biggest supporter.... Again here are my totals
I didn't see your thread about distances for the Ironman, and frankly I don't know that I would want to... I did what I COULD DO given job, family, travel, HEALTH, etc..... And finishing in 12:30 hrs... I would do it again in a heartbeat... I may have a different mentallity on this stuff, but it is more for the experiences, health, and joy, than the COMPETING (in my opinion)....
I guess what I am saying is that you can't get wrapped up in DISTANCE! I am no expert, and I have never met you, so I don't know what your personality is like, your home life, career, etc... I can only tell you my opinion. Given your effort level (SO FAR), your commitment, your base, etc.... I think you will do really well! Use the 1/2 in 8 days or so as a good barometer... It is a good test, and frankly I think is a better distance!!! IT makes you train EXTREMELY HARD, but also allows you some time for life! Hope this helps?!
Good luck racing everyone... I myself will be sitting on my arse still with no exercise, and still no talking.... I am getting good at this SILENT GAME! I have beaten all my neice's and nephews in the silent game! 5 days STRAIGHT!!! It sucks... I did get to REI yesterday, and had some retail therapy... I bought a new pair of trail running shoes... I just need to be given the green light to go exercise. The doctors version of "minimal exercise" this week was walking up and down the stairs from the bedroom to the family room! I guess he doesn't know me very well! In the meantime... The dog is getting lots of walks.... |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Steve thanks for the info. Ya my numbers are based on what I would feel comfortable doing based on what I was able to do this year (+20 percent boost). Basically my long rides need to be longer and my long runs need to be longer, fairly happy with swim distances. The rest of it is pretty much where it should be. There were many folks who completed Ironmen with fewer miles (2k bike, 500 run 56 miles swam). Personally I just am gona set the bar at that level so that I can feel confident in being able to finish. You are much faster than I am, have a 9 year base as apposed to 1 year and have a good idea what it takes to complete an IM for you. I want to be pretty confident that I won't DNF based on my speed and training. I over prepare lectures and presentations also. And I don't want to freek out my wife by not finishing or bearly finishing. (Ya I know there are many variables that can not be controlled etc. ) My HIM will be in 95 F weather so I will get a good picture of my body operating at those temps for a longer period of time. yay. I have done a 65 mile ride in 95 F temps this summer and did 70 in 90 F temps last week. Tapering this weekend is gona be hard, I have been amping up for so long. Thanks again. |

I didn't get under 2 hours like I wanted to but I am happy with the resultsRace results will be up in about 20 minutes. I felt good all through the race and bettered my last time by about 8 minutes. I had a couple of incidents during the day. First I forgot my wetsuit at home so had to swim without it. As it turns out the water wasn't too bad. I don't know what the temp was but it was cold getting in. Once the race started though I didn't even notice the temp. Best 750 m I have ever done. transition was good @ 1:29 probably because I didn't have to fight with the wetsuit. Next was getting ont he bike. I leaned too far over lost my balance as I was throwing my leg up and over and took a header into the gravel at the side of the road. Nothing hurt there except my pride as I was in front of the crowd at that time. About halfway through the bike ride the rear cable split and I was unable to switch gears on the rear sprocket. So I only had two gears for the balance of the ride. As this was rolling course I had a few testy climbs going up hill. After that it was all good. You can see the details in the race report. |
