Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official ThreadHere's my reasons. I started this crazy sport back in 2003 to loose weight and have fun. I get bored real easy and figured this would keep me occupied for awhile. I lost 62 pounds and did about 7 or 8 events during the next 3 years and topped it off with a local HIM. I figured that would be it. Layed off a couple of years and got back into 2 years ago. Lost 25lbs of some of the weight I gained back and just kept thinking of the Ultimate....The Ironman. We had big cutbacks at work and wasnt going to have much overtime and decided that with 4 kids it was now or never. I've always been intrigued by this race. I'm goal oriented and I love challenges. I get a lot of inspiration from my mom who will be at the race with my dad, brother and his family and my wife and the kids. My mom ran her first marathon at 40 and she always tells me she couldnt have done it without me encourging her. She's a way back of the pack runner who just wanted to see if she could do it. Well she did, and then did it again for her 50th. So for my 50th birthday (which is October 7th this year ) I decided I would do this crazy thing. I've done the training and the good Lord willing I will finish. Peyton, our 3rd child, was born with siezures. He's 13 now, but had to have half his brain disconnected when he was 6. The brain defect and surgery have disabled him in that he has learning and developental problems. He also has physical problems in that he doesnt have full use of one arm and one leg. And yet he plays baseball, swims on the swim team and last year started doing triathlons because "that what dad does." Its everything he can do to finish two lengths of the pool. But he does it and gets right back in to do it again. He rides a three wheel recumbant bike and runs with a severe limp....and bugs me all the time to let him go "train". So when I hit the "Line" during the marathon portion of the race and don't feel like I can take another step, all I have to do is look at my mom and my son cheering me on and unless I'm dead, I'm finishing this beast under the time limit. But I won't be doing this again anytime soon. I want my life back!!! |
