Question for anyone doing Matt Fitzgerald Week-By-Week Training plan. I wrote down all of my workouts and codes and then gave my book to a friend to use. My workout for Wednesday is Run Hill Repeats 5 (RHR5). I didn't write down what that code means. Could someone please share it with me?

Thanks

Love my grid foam roller.   I use it daily for 3 years now.  DAILY!!   Well actually, I've only had my grid foam roller for about a year, but before that it was the crappy red foam roller from Target.  The foam roller is definitely your friend.
I was going to buy a foam roller soon. Do you feel that there is a significant difference between the quality and effectiveness of different rollers or are they all pretty similar? Do you recommend the grid roller over anything else?

I recommend the grid for one simple reason: It's a solid plastic core so it will not lose it's rigidity.  Yes it's 40 bucks; however the simple 100% foam rollers that ar 20 to 25 bucks only last me a year.  They get all squished in the middle and quickly lose their effectiveness.  To be honest, PVC pipe wrapped in carpet would get the job done just the same, and I've seen these homemade rollers in Physical Therapist offices.  But the grid is very well constructed, the diamond shaped nubbies do add a little spice/kick and penetrate a little deeper; but not really.  Like if I closed my eyes I probably couldn't tell if I was on the smooth side or nubby side.  But the solid core alone makes it a no-brainer value.

For me, there is no way when I was marathon training at 40-miles+ a week that I could stay injury-free without constantly foam rolling.  Same thing with Ironman training.   I've seen pro-triathletes mention that they spend lots of time with their foam rollers.  I sware by mine

Oh, and to really unlock the beauty of the foam roller, when you're rolling your IT Band - bend your leg up and down as you roll.  Pain never felt so good!!

12 x 30 sec (38 min. total)  30-sec. uphill running intervals @ speed intensity w/ 1-min. active recoveries; warm up and cool down long enough to reach total time.

Have fun

Couldn't agree more.  I've had mine for a looong time now and that solid core keeps it going strong.

glazebal - 2011-04-22 6:29 PM I'll be on the trainer riding some kind of Computrainer course for 90 miles. At least I'll have some movies or tv shows to watch to keep me company. Evidently I need to make sure I'm logged on as me and not my wife when I try to post

I was about to fall asleep last night and all of a sudden I realized -- You rode 90 miles on the trainer.  WOW!  That's terrifically insane!!

It wasn't too bad. I had plenty of shows and a movie to watch. Now when the cat comes downstairs to do its business, that's where it gets to be a real mental battle.

I don't know what worse; 90 miles on a trainer, or DC thinking about it while drifting off to sleep.

Yeah, I've trained that cat to poop at mile 5.  Talk about HTFU Tongue out  She did that last year 15 minutes into my 100 miler on the trainer....that made the last 11 miles of the course in LP seem awesome after that experience!!!

I hate hearing about all these injuries – frustrating after putting in all the training.  We too are dealing with an injury, but hoping it won’t end up being a deal breaker.  ('We' being the parents trying to do this with 2 of our kids.)  I will share what we have learned in case it can help someone.  My husband has a bad knee, definitely exacerbated by running.  An MRI showed a torn and worn meniscus in his left knee.  He has been working with a sports med doc, who gave him a choice of surgery or multiple injections.  They are not cortisone, but rather injecting a substitute substance to help cushion the knee joint.  He elected to try that route along with starting to take glucosamine chondroitin with boswella.  So far he has not been able to run but is able to cycle without too much trouble.  Yesterday we did 64 miles and he felt just some minor pain.  He may have to walk the marathon, and is now going to start fast walking instead of running in his training.  That should help maintain cardio fitness and help him be ready for whatever he ends up doing on the last leg.  Speaking of cycling – we were able to cycle outside yesterday, 50 degrees and without rain!  It was wonderful.  We did deal with a strong headwind for part of the route, but we need that to toughen us up.

KR 140.6  - it is fun to do something like this with your kids.  Keep that dream alive and really do it.  I now have a granddaughter who says she is going to do this with me someday.  That may be more of a stretch, but I will try as long as I can.

Thanks for encouragement!! I would love to do this with my kids... so cool you guys are doing this with your boys.  I really hope your husband's knee hangs in there... I have read reports of those just doing the fast walk thing for the marathon.   Injury is totally the beast biting at our heels at all times, right?  I have been around enough years to know this and when I think "will I make it to Placid?" I think it is a big fat MAYBE (all depends on holding off those injuries)

I've gotten so used to peeing a the start of races I don't think twice about being frozen in my tracks with a look a deep concentration on my face.  I try not to think about the water quality though :P

Yeah, I did NYC in 2007.  My first and last time doing that marathon!!  It was more crowded on that course than the Mall at Christmas time.  I had to zig-zag past people for 20-miles.  I sware, it didn't open up for me till we got into Manahattan.  Never again!!

Pee is sterile

And you forgot to post Page 1: http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/The-6-Grossest-Things-About-Triathlon.htm?cmp=306&memberid=116930743&lyrisid=21777942&page=1

And they forgot Public Defecation.  On two hideous and heinous occasions (once was a girl and once a dude) I accidentally came across people crouching like my labradoodle does in the backyard and going #2.  Totally, totally gross.  And in all fairness, it was before running races; not triathlons.  But close enough.  And once before a half marathon I even stepped in human feces behind a dumpster.

Okay.  I'm gonna go hurl now....

Too many caffeine injected chocolate GUI`s can do that to you.....  I wonder if stuffing a few pieces of toilet paper in the back pocket would be advisable for the run.  At least the end comes with dignity.

RJohnson1979 - RE:Marathon- I entered the lottery (which was meant to be drawn today at 12pm) but have not heard anything – have you?.  The web site is not very helpful – assume we`ll here one way or another later today…….

I wasn't planning, but my calendar unfortunately just opened up and I am looking for a Training Camp in Lake Placid in June. So far I found these three, but the price difference as you can see below is quiet big.

Any recommendations on how to choose one?

  • TriVault Ironman Lake Placid Training Camp           June 9-12        $375.00
  • Fireman Ironman Lake Placid Training Camp          June 17-19      $169.00
  • Coach Troy Lake Placid Training Camp                   June 16-19      $445.00

A friend of mine went to the fireman ironman camp last year and he said it was great.  Good on course support, good peeps and pro athletes are there for motivational talks.  I'm attending the May and June camps.  The more time on the course for me the better!

Thank you! Just registered for Fireman LP Training Camp in June.

Finally bought a compact crank. Don't think it'll be here before this week's long ride, but should be running with some extra granny gears in about one week.

I dreamed about Di2 the other night... think I'll buy a lottery tix today.

Just reread a bunch of IMLP race reports from the last few years. I'm dehydrated from all the tears I shed. I will be a blubbering mess of emotion when I finish this race. Sincere thanks to all of you on this thread for all the motivation, advice and laughs you've given me over the last few months.

You'll be happy to have a compact on second climb up to Lake Placid from mile 98 to 112.

I was at the bike shop today picking up my new Ordu, fun but also painful as my less than 1 year old Ordu was ruined by Federal Express ground last month. This was the second shop that told me Shimano is coming out with electronic shifting for Ultegra soonish...so may be a little more affordable for many of us.

Haha. I didn't get in so was contemplating signing up for the Philly Marathon... but I've decided to give myself a little break after IM. I am signed up for an Olympic mid September but I think I'm going to wait and see what post-IM world is like before signing up for any more races this year!

Hey guys...the past week was a bit of a write off for training...wrote my final and then took off to Iowa for the weekend to see my BF and we had full intention on training and I had all my stuff with me...and then I got sick... Upper resp and now some lower resp involvement. So ya...

2 races this weekend. Trail 10km and a DU. Which will probably be the first time officially taking my bike out on the road all season...and will probably be cold...bbrrrrr! Haha.

Hope everyone had a smoother last week of training than I did!
