Good morning Ghoulies!

We got mail this weekend. It was the packet containing the information from having Keri tested for learning disabilities. The kid tested off the charts in math, her IQ was higher than I expected, and she can't read. I wonder what she would test at for IQ if she could read. In some of the areas related to reading/language she tested in the 1% percentile. They classified it as Specific Learning Disability, which apparently is some generic term they use now instead of just saying "Dyslexia" or something else. We will have to have a few meetings with the school and she will have an IEP in place for the fall.

Good for you for getting a battle plan ready. She is gonna rock the world when you all figure out which way to turn the key to unlock how her mind works. My Step son had a similar problem. We got him some tutoring from some one who was GREAT. It took a bit of work and some encouragement and bribery (mostly as a way to get him over the "I can't do it" mental block) but he is graduated from College and teaching math and physics to high school kids.

She's a smart cookie. By the end of the school year she had completed her 19 times tables. How many adults do you think you could find in the building that could multiply 1-10 by 19 in their heads in less than 5 seconds?

I wish she would have been given something more concrete than Specific Learning Disability. I'd like to research what we can do to help her.

Morning Ghoulies.

I am home for the day. Got the Mom semi-settled in next door and I am now trying to catch up at work and un-pack and pack up at the same time to head to Raleigh for a couple of days. Un-fun.

It is VERY good to be home. My Bro and SIL are about as un-like me in every way and their house is a zoo. Literally. 5 dogs and 3 cats. The dogs bark ALL THE TIME. Even at night. I was smart an brought ear plugs this time. Sheesh.

Just take what you already have packed. Who cares if it smells. Maybe they'll ask you to leave a little bit earlier if no one can stand the stench.

They give out that label when there is something going on that doesn't fit into the usual diagnosis of "dyslexia" or "autistic" or such. That is both good and bad. You have to do more work to figure out the WHY and the WHAT to do but it is good that there isn't something really messed up.

I am not sure we ever figured out the WHY for my Step-son. We just figured out what seemed to help. One of the things that really helped him was him breaking through the barrier of the diagnosis. He kinda stopped making an effort to even try to read because he knew he had a "disability" so he figured he just plain couldn't read and never would. I read with him every night for a while, and we blundered on the knowledge that he could indeed read, he would start to second and third and fourth guess himself and loose the ability to read words he just read to me a couple of minutes ago. When he figured out he could actually read, he made progress. It was still a big effort and took a long time, by the time he was in middle high school, he would read a book for pleasure. Each kid is so different on what makes them tick. You WILL find the key.

One of the things we also did is bribe him. He can actually work for a goal (my step daughter cannot). So, I told him if he got a C in his language class,  I would buy him an x-box (they had just come out). If he got a B, a go-kart. If he got an A, we would go on a trip of his choosing (within reason). I gave him the year to do it. The next report card, he got the x-box, by the end of the year, he had the go-kart and we went on a trip. He never, ever thought that he would get anything above a C on his report card. He just didn't think he was smart enough even though we kept telling him he was. He had to prove it to himself. The same method would not work at all for my DD. She cannot save for the future at all. I gave a similar challenge to her for her math. No go. She got worse grades so dad took stuff away for every bad grade until the grades came up. BOOM, grades came up. She works to not loose privileges or things, but can't work to get them. The tow of them are opposite in almost every way. Makes parenting a challenge, eh?

Good Morning!

Did you ever get to make your reservation?  I probably would have hung up and called back.  If they are truly busy then that would not have helped me, but I tend to figure that they forgot to come back!

Good morning Ghoulies!

The kiddos were pretty full of themselves last night, so about an hour after dinner I took them downstairs and had them do 20 minutes of P90X Plyometrics. It did the trick. The house was pretty quiet the rest of the evening.

Isn't that cool. I like that you don't have to carry the fuel cannisters, and the charging is definitely a bonus.
