Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by rquinn23 Well, not only did I do it, I crushed it! I am an IronWoman! Total time 11:17:08 and 8th place in my age group! Had a current on the swim after the turn around at 1000 yards, so that helped a lot. I crushed the bike course, which I didn't expect to do because of the hills, but it wasn't that bad and I loved the course. The run got really tough at mile 12 and my stomach was tightening up so that was tough on my nutrition plan and at mile 18 my legs started to hurt bad. But...still did great and ran the marathon in 4:08, only 19 minutes slower than my PR. So even though I had to fight through the second half of the run and slow it down a lot, I am overjoyed with the result! Thanks for all of your support. Will post a race report sometime this week. Wow! That's an incredible time and effort. Did you show up for the roll down? |

Robin - sounds like you had an awesome race! Congrats! Looking forward to your full report! I had a great weekend. I went for a bike fitting on Friday. I was there for about 3 1/2 hours and I found it so interesting! I feel like I learned a lot and we changed quite a few things. When I got home, I had a run planned. I was so tired, but I headed out. I did 9 miles and I actually felt really good. I think I found that zone where I just ran, and I reached 9 miles before I even realized it. Saturday I got up and did a 4 hour ride to test out my new bike fit, and work on some nutrition. I don't know about the fig newtons in special needs, they seemed kinda dry and too chewy when I tried to eat them at halfway. Anybody have anything else they have used? Anyway, It was a good ride. I was comfortable the entire way, and felt like I could keep going! On Sunday I did an hour OWS. This week is a recovery week and I have been feeling so good I don't even want a recovery week! Hope everyone has a great week! |

Karen - I like fig newtons but only at the first half of my ride. Larabars are another good choice and stay a little more moist. Ken - Already researching what to do next -- would have definitely signed up for another go at IMMT but we're still considering a West Coast move (have to make a decision by xmas) so ....maybe if my laptop is super quick I can grab a spot for IMAZ '14 or IMFL '14. If we stay here - then I think I maygive IMLP a go in '15. Any recommendations?? My husband bet my son $10 that I wouldn't do another Ironman --- and my boy really wants that $10!! |

Hope everyone has a great week! Yes,,,,, two months.. Looks like you and I are on a similar plan. I am also on a recovery week this week after three week build up. On Thursday, I ran 13 miles, Friday I swam 1.5 miles and Saturday biked 70 miles. I wanted to at least cover half the distances three days in a row. In four weeks, my goal is to cover 3/4 of the distance in each discipline three days in a row and the following week would be a rest day. With three weeks to go, I would do one 100 mile bike ride followed by a 6 mile run and then two weeks of taper.... sounds easy when you just type it in. Oh, I forgot, soccer starts in a few weeks and I am coaching my son's team. |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hey Karen Big Garmin fan here. I have the edge 705 and the 910xt. Tons of data points you can customize to see on different screens. You can throw it on different bikes and use it for running or hiking too. On the 705 you can even load maps and find your way home if you get lost! It reads all the power meters out there too. The only thing I would think about is using an iPhone and Wahoo RPKT instead. There's a lot of features to that as well. But my 910xt keeps track of my swim laps! ?? |

I have the 310 which was the best option for what I wanted to spend at the time. I am not a huge numbers junkie so my main interest was really tracking time and distance. Having the lap counter like on the 910 would have been nice but the cost did not justify it since I only make it to the pool a few times a year. At the time I bought mine, the cost was high since the 910 were just introduced. Another huge thing I like about garmin is their replacement program. You pay a flat fee and they send you a reburb model regardless of what is wrong with yours. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I have used the 305, 310, and now 910. I like the data and am especially enjoying not counting laps, although some days the Garmin counts them almost as badly as I do. I find for the most part that they are reliable and fairly easy to use once you understand them. Probably the biggest challenge is finding and using all the features as they have numerous features that get over looked by me at times. I haven't tried the bike specific computers, but may at some point. |

A number of family members will be in Wisconsin cheering me on and was wondering what would work best for them to follow where I am on the course. Thanks for any input. |

There is a pretty good tracking service you can order on line that works well from what I have seen. They give you a transponder to wear and you can give friends, family, etc. the website to track you on. I understand it works pretty good from a smart phone as well. I am going to give it a try in Florida for the first time. Maybe someone else can give the name and link as the name has slipped my mind and I don't have the link on my work pc. If not, I will post it this weekend when I get home. |

I was wondering what people suggest for tracking athletes during Ironman. A number of family members will be in Wisconsin cheering me on and was wondering what would work best for them to follow where I am on the course. Thanks for any input. I rented the MyAthleteLive tracker for the Louisville race, which is a GPS device you wear on your race belt. However, all of my friends and family said it was not working. Prior to the race I read great reviews about it, so I don't know if there was a problem with their site that day or what. I'm going to try to get my money back, because I did test it the day before and it was working, and I wore it as instructed and everything, so I think it was a glitch on their end. There are apps for smart phones, such as IronTrac and Pele that seem to work well, but those just take the data from the Ironman website when you cross the timing mats. I think it ended up that most of my friends and family just used the IM website updates for tracking. It's a little slow, but it worked well enough, especially for people at home to see me cross the finish line via the live feed from the IM website. I am feeling much better than expected after my race--very little muscle soreness, hardly any unexpected chafing, but I do now have a head cold. Maybe from the lowered immune system? I managed to go the entire training season without getting sick, but now I have a sinus/throat thing going on. Again, likely a result of the race and being awake for so long (I stayed out to watch the final hour of finishers, really amazing!), then 13 hours in the car the next day driving home. Luckily I planned to take yesterday and today off of work to recover. Went for a two mile walk yesterday morning and felt great other than lower back pain. If my head cold clears up a bit today I might try an easy bike tonight, then a swim tomorrow. Still riding the Ironman high! I think I'll get my race report typed up today. Happy training to everyone still in prep mode! |

Also, I emailed MyAthleteLive and they are giving me a refund! I looked at some data from other athletes, and it looked like their trackers worked. Apparently mine wasn't working until halfway through the bike course, even though I had a green light signaling a good GPS signal when I turned it on. So even though I did not have luck with it, from what I've read, most people do. And it's nice that they are giving me a refund. |

Don't push things along too quickly, although I am glad there is little pain don't be in too big of a hurry to get back into things as the fatigue factor can be masked by the adrenaline of the success of the day. Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Can't wait to read your race report, Becky! I am headed in to my longest tri ever, which is still short of a HIM, on Saturday, and feeling very nervous. It's a mile swim, 40 mile bike, and 10 mile run. So far I've only done the 40 mile bike twice in training and a 10 mile run once. Seriously resisting the urge to get out and get one last long workout it. I'm trying to think about this as just a nutrition rehearsal for Austin 70.3. Anyone else racing this weekend? Jaime |

Becky you race was well executed across the board!! You had a plan, stuck to it when it worked, made great adjustments when needed and finished with a time that you didn't expect! I think you were better prepared and conditioned than you gave yourself credit for! I enjoyed the RR as well!! Awesome job IRONMAN Becky! |

We had a 50th anniversary party for my parents yesterday so a lot of out of town guests this weekend. My in laws are in town for the week too. I am working but the wife is off so hopefully she doesn't want to do a lot after work!! This weekend ends the last of the Peasantman (registration opened last night for 2014, but I didn't register) recovery and next week starts the build towards IMFL!! I am switching from a coaching plan program with my coach to one on one for that! I know we got some recovering Ironmen (Ironwomen) and some heading into the taper for IMWI!! I hope you are all doing well!! |

Starting to shake off the post-ironman fatigue and get back into some light training. Still taking at least another 2 weeks off from running, hoping my PF will heal up....it's amazing how many people I notice running when I can't run So I'm trying to figure out what to do for 2014....there's still a distinct possible west coast move (we have to make a decision by xmas) so do I just go for a season of a couple HIMs and other smaller local races, so I don't have to sign up right away or lose a $$ if I have to drop out or do I jump into a 140.6 - hubby has given the thumbs up for Chattanooga. Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend ....it's a lazy rainy weekend here!! |

Veteran 458 Greensburg, PA | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I have had a good weekend so far. I did a 75 mile ride on Saturday with a friend. It was more of a fun ride than a training ride, but it gave me some good time in the saddle. And it was fun to spend the day with my friend. Then it was the last race of the season at the track for our car. This morning I ran 9 miles, then spent the afternoon with my Mom at a craft show. Tomorrow I will do the local 5k in the morning, and then the Pitt football game in the evening. I so cannot believe that it is football season already. How did that happen?? I hope everyone has an enjoyable Labor Day! Karen |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed So, I haven't been posting much about training lately, cause there hasn't been much getting done to report. Ehh... Been in this kinda slump before, so not too worried. I did get out to a lake before this morning's t-storms to practice run-swim-run-swim-run-swim-run transitions for Sunday's point to point race. It looks like I'll be swimming with my shoes and shorty thin socks on my feets. None of the fast swimmers will be doing it this way, but my swims will be slow anyway. My advice to anyone doing a race like this is to think about a plan and practice way more in advance than this. If I had a month or more, I'd be getting different shoes and using a different plan, but a little late now to mess with shoes before a 19 mile trail run... Also, happy to have my new race wheels ready in time. They are like Dr. Frankenstein's 808's. While I was never tempted to shell out the cash for new Zipps, the Chinese knockoffs use pretty crappy hubs. So I now have 88mm Chinese rims, sweet Chris King Hubs (thanks for the tip Brian, I love them and they make a wild sound at speed), I glued them up with some conti GP's. I finally feel like I got it right for race wheels. Hope everyone had a great weekend! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by gadgetlaw Does anyone have a Garmin? I was checking out the 510 and was wondering if anyone had that one, or a different one? Do you like it? Just looking for some input before I commit. Yep! After my 305 got run over by a car (user error, I didn't clip it in well enough), I was battling in what to get. 310, 910, 500 or 510. Ultimately, I ended up getting the 500 because it was a GREAT deal last month where I would have $50 rebate from Garmin, and 15% off AND it was on sale. I decided to get the 500 because I'm more of a cyclist than a triathlete. If I ever need to run and want to know my mileage, I tend to do it by time, and measure out the course on MapMyRUn, OR I just stick the Garmin in my pocket and just record the mileage. I don't care about intervals or specific pace, etc, so that's why I didn't go with a triathlon watch. For the swim, I'm fine with just using a standard watch. Between the 500 and the 510, I think you'll just be better off with the 500 if you're not really into data and all the extra features. It's just better for the bang of your buck. 510 has touch screen, color, and capability to track you through your phone's data (which I have limited data anyways), that's pretty much it. It's just like a 800 actually. If you read DC Rainmaker's reviews between the 500 and the 510, you can see that he thinks the 510 ain't worth it. Hope it helps! However, if you're running a lot as well as cycling, I would decide between the 310 or 910. It has a quarter mount, which I am REALLY grateful for, and much more sturdier than the 305. Get yourself Barfly 2.0 and you're set for cycling. |
